Topic: 1975, Zep's new sound or Purple's funk/hard edge?? Posted: March 15 2008 at 12:20 |
Zep's new sound album, Physical Graffiti, or Purple's underrated funk/hard rock edge, Come Taste the Band.
I'm a massive DP fan, but I really admire Zep, but I think Physical Graffiti was a weak album, even though many fans praise that album.
Come Taste the Band, is great, mix of funk and hard rock at it's best, with Tommy Bolin giving it a unique touch. Hughes takes control!

Come Taste the Band is a great, very underrated album, while Physical Graffiti is somewhat uneven (especially the second disk, which sounds a bit like it was put together in a hurry), in spite of milestone tracks such as "Kashmir" or "Trampled Underfoot". Therefore, I voted for the Purple album, which is one of my favourites from the band.

Ha, awsome! another CTTB lover... Yeah I agree with the second disc, by the way many of the songs from the second disc are outtakes or B-sides, so it's not really material meant to be on this album, even though Down by the Seaside, In the Light, Night Flight, others are really good. The first disc having good songs, but they're not really Zep's sound we're familiar with. I really got sick with the album, the only disc I listen perhaps is there second.

Not voting since I don't remember Purple's album well-enough (definitely heard it as a kid). Don't listen to Zep these days, but I thought that Physical Graffiti was a terrific album (that, Houses of the Holy and the, in my mind, under-appreciated In Through the Out Door were my favourites by Zep when I was a huge Zephead as a teenager). Actually, Zep kind of bores me now as it comes across as so simplistic compared to prog, and I always had an issue with Plant's vocals (especially of the "ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby" variety which seems immature).

Love both albums but Physical Graffiti is Zep's greatest IMO and wins easily.

Although I don't think it's Led Zeppelin's best effort, Physical Graffiti wins - at least for me

Both IMHO have lots of fillers, but LZ wins.

Come Taste The Band is one of the most underrated albums from one of hard rock's most underappreciated bands, but Physical Graffiti is a flat-out masterpiece. No question, Zep wins.
