Topic: Top Ten Favorite Modern Bands Posted: May 09 2008 at 02:21 |
Modern defined as: has released an album in the last 5 years (so must've released an album 2004 or later, *not* 2003).
Also, this does not mean groups who are releasing crap now but were great before; this should be based on who you get most excited about when a new album is released (or bands who released albums and then broke up, but who you wish would reform, e.g. Cerberus Shoal).
Ready go. [/blue man group]
EDIT: If the band has a new album scheduled for release, they are suitable for the thread, even if they haven't released an album after 2003.
EDIT2: since there seems to be some confusion, I highlighted my pretty explicit definition of what constitutes a "modern" band with regards to this topic.

This is tough because I get excited about a lot of releases, and at the same time I don't get excited for releases by some of my favorite bands, but of course here's a shot (loosely ordered and strictly coming from the perspective of who excites me the most by releasing new material:
The Mars Volta
Dream Theater
Opeth
Between the Buried and Me
Sigur Ros
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Dear Hunter
...I can't finish this list after all...
But I will say it's nice to see Animal Collective on your list!

Animal Collective are amazing; I could probably move them up to #4.

- The Mars Volta
- Opeth
- Grayceon
- Van der Graaf Generator
- Dark Suns
- The Pax Cecilia
- Wobbler
- Indukti
The first two are equal, the other 8 will change depending on my mood and how good their last release was.

so 2003 and older is considered antiquiated ?
I'm confused---the title says 'modern bands'. Magma is anything but a modern band. They have been around since the early 70s. So you are a "modern band" if you released any album in the last 5 years?

That portion is pretty subjective, since I like modern Rush, Genesis, Yes, etc... I can include them, but you can't since you think they are crap (granted neither Genesis or Yes have released anything in 4 or 5 years, so that is a moot point). Also, what if they are releasing crap now but were only good before?
1. Rush
2. Ayreon
3. Porcupine Tree
4. Marillion
5. The Flower Kings
6. Spock's Beard
7. The Tangent
8. Beardfish (at least I am kind of excited about their new album)
9. Dream Theater
10. Sylvan
The list is probably pretty similar to my favorite "modern" bands. Yes would be included except that Magnification was released in 2001 so they don't count, unless the Live At Montreaux in 2007 qualifies them, which I wouldn't think that it would.

Where did you get that idea? I haven't anything post 1985 by any of those bands.

Then why would you even consider them for your list, eh?

I would hope so, since that's what the list is supposed to be
Yes would be included except that Magnification was released in 2001 so they don't count, unless the Live At Montreaux in 2007 qualifies them, which I wouldn't think that it would. |
I was thinking studio albums only but it's really your decision.

Well, for one you listed Magma number 1. And for 2 you are posting on Prog Archives, so I have a pretty high chance of being correct with this post.
Also, what if they are releasing crap now but were only good before? |

For example, I really like Asia, who were IMO good before but not great. I am looking forward to hearing their new album Phoenix. Because it is Asia, I suppose many on this site would consider both before and now crap, but that is another discussion. |

I am not sure what modern means in the context of this thread, and I am limiting this to prog bands, but here goes:
1. Porcupine Tree---easily the most important prog band in the world today, the most interesting and the best live band on the planet, thus, the band I most look forward to getting anything new
2. Genesis---since they are my all time favorite band and just released a double live album of last year's tour, as well as soundboard releases of every show on the tour, and since I saw 4 of the shows and couldn't wait for this tour to happen, they would have to be my second modern band; and they played a setlist full of great progressive rock. One of the few classic prog bands from the 70s that still has the chops.
3. Pure Reason Revolution----The Dark Third was the album of the year, saw them live last year, and I can't wait to see what this young fresh group from GB comes up with next---highly anticipated
4. IQ---the 2004 (?) album Dark Matter is simply one of the best prog albums I have heard in a long long time, symphonic, melodic, dark and majestic. The kind of music I wish Genesis still was making.
5.. Yes---Live at Montreax, although from a 2003 concert was released last year, and proves that this incredible collection of talent just gets better with age, and I can't wait for the tour this year
6. Flower Kings---looking forward to seeing them live this year, and always anticipate their albums, even though it takes a while to warm to them sometimes
7. Wobbler---I want to hear more from this Anglagaard like group
8. Nebelnest---very impressed when I saw them last year and another group I want more product from
9. Magenta---looking forward to getting this next album, supposed to be a little darker
10. Von Frickle---just saw them live, their last album Arrythmia was killer, and they are working on a new album and are going to release a live album. See my review in the live shows section
11. Rush---the last album was their best in years, and the tour was very good, so looking forward to seeing them again
12. Riverside--they keep putting out good albums, so I am there
honorable mention---Knight Area, Indukti, IZZ, Glass Hammer, White Willow

IQ
Muse
The Decemberists
Beardfish
Deluge Grander
Opeth
Ubi Maior
Anekdoten
Rush
Van der Graaf Generator
I had to leave several good ones off, but I'm happy with that list. It's unfortunate that some bands don't release the amount of material that was expected "back in the day", I think that is the key reason I'm not able to get as excited about particular bands...however there are also many who do release a lot of quality material quickly, just look at Dan Britton's projects and Beardfish, the Decemberists, etc. and I'm not suprised that these groups are among my favorites for that very reason.

I read that review of of yours.. sounds really damn interesting.... for me... no top 10 list... lots of new modern stuff I hear and like through the genre teams and our evaluations.. but couldn't even think of making a top 10 list of them. I simply don't listen to much of it for pleasure in my 'spare' time. really the only modern groups that approach being on a favorite's list would be Beardfish and Radiohead. Too many of these groups are new.. which is not surprising and haven't got the discography or the mileage to rank in my personal favorites. That just takes time I guess. I just enjoy listening to the modern stuff here as a change of pace to that old worn out 70's stuff
