Apparently Roadrunner Records decided to release a track already and you can download it free on their website, but it says it will only be available for 24 hours so download it now if you want to listen to it.  This is the second track from the new Dream Theater album.

Listened to it today ... it's quite what I expected. It strongly reminded me of Systematic Chaos. It's definitely not a return to their former strength ... I'll be buying the album nevertheless, and I'll undoubtedly enjoy listening to it. How many fans of Yes or Genesis are enjoying these artists' 10th studio albums?Wink

I was hoping for something a bit better, but then again this is just the 'single' so maybe the rest of the album will still be really good.

btw i heard A Nightmare to Remember, and is waaaayyyyyyy better of a song than A Rite of Passage. Havent heard any other tracks, i think AROP is the equivalent of Forsaken from SC, so better things are to come.

i just wish DT would stop worrying about singles, and such, cmon, it's not 1991 anymore, MTV and radio dont really care about rock/metal in general, let alone DT. They dont need singles!!!

Yeah this really only confirmed my expectations of the album (which wasnt a good thing).  It actually reminded me most of train of thought, that one verse sounded straight out of in the name of god.  Really though I just found the song to be really predictable, its just like they have a formula now for a song that will appeal to their fans.  I would really like to see a solo from petrucci or rudess that actually fits with the song or has some emotion for once.  Like you guys said though, it could just be that this is the single so we shouldnt expect anything better.

They need to stop making albums.  Indefinitely.

^ sounds a bit harsh to me...

Even on their weaker albums some really good material can be found.  I mean, even FII and SC had some great moments.

A Nightmare to Remember is better, but it's still pretty awful to me.

Might be something they're doing for Roadrunner. I sympathize ... why not promote the music a bit to audiences that wouldn't normally listen to prog. Might get them some gigs at festivals, too.

^What do you mean give up that easily?
I spent time being hopeful for Octavarium being good. I didn't enjoy it.
I spent another 2 years hoping Systematic Chaos would be good. There is only one song from that album I really enjoy, the rest is "Dream Theater's business as usual" or just plain crap (Prophets of War, Forsaken).
I don't think waiting 2 years after hearing an album you didn't like in the hope the next one would be any good is a case of giving up easy.
I gave the band plenty of time I've been heavily disappointed 3 times a in a row.
This is before I even take into account I was disappointed by 6DOIT despite how much people hyped it up for me.
I don't know why I should bother taking the time with the band anymore to be honest, there aren't any signs the band is going to put out an album anymore that is going be worth my time anyway.
Plenty of other bands I've heard in recent months that are really doing it for me anyway, so I'm not overly worried about one band not putting out albums I like anymore.
Plenty more good music out there, just (IMO) Dream Theater isn't one of the bands doing it anymore.

yeah they lost me after octavarium, havent been too excited about them in a while, although i did like the fact that they actually changed up the pace every album from SFAM to ToT. every album was a little bit different and i respect that. these last few have been a rehashing of octavariums/ToT's weaker moments. meh. wont be buying. maybe if they did something like they did initially with train of thought id be interested. lets ACTUALLY try and be metal for once. it obviously wasnt perfect but at least it was different.

anyways sorry to troll this thread, i wont be back to argue. dt's too easy to hate, especially if they used to be your favorite band. :(

Ok, so you simply don't like modern Dream Theater. I just meant that you probably can't judge their new album by just this one song ... as you can't judge Systematic Chaos by listening to Forsaken. I agree with your conclusion though ... it's somewhat unlikely that you'll enjoy their next album.Wink

But you absolutely can. It might be a bit poppy, but quality wise it's about average of the album. Three tracks that are better, three that are worse, and they don't stray that much from each other either.

^ I would disagree with the "absolutely" part ... it's just your opinion. For example, in my opinion there's only one track on Systematic Chaos that's worse than Forsaken (Prophets of War).
