Harsh vocals for me are very hard to get into, and I've tried alot. Listening to Textures right now (they not only growl but act like they are vomitting while they do it), but the excellent Between the Buried and Me is similar. It's just unpleasant and really doesn't do anything for me musically.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

There are VERY FEW prog bands I've found who's discography I find overall to be uninteresting or dislikable. These are those very few:
Pain of Salvation. I can't stand them. At all. ![]() ![]() Sieges Even. Just not for me. Psychotic Waltz, though I can put up with hearing it for quite a while. I've just never gotten into them for some reason. Someday maybe... Oh and I've never been able to get into IQ either. Too repetitive for me, but I don't mind them. That's all, actually. I don't overall dislike any other of the thousands of bands I've heard from here. ![]() |

- Genesis
- The Beatles
- The Decemberists
- Brian Eno (any ambient really)
- Magma (the few albums I have heard aren't that special)
- Kansas (too poppy)
- almost every popular band from the last 20 or so years
- Prog Metal (truely awful genre)

I agree with the comments about second chances and multiple listens. For the last three months I have been reviewing and rating albums to be included in a personal Top 100 that I'm putting together. I am discovering that many of the albums selected so far did not impress me the first time around or even the second time. The mind sometimes will try to trick you, but it comes down to something "clicking or not clicking".
It took multiple listens before these albums "clicked":
Missing Link "Nevergreen"
Beggars Opera "Sagittary
Nova "Vimana"
Alquin "The Mountain Queen"
Multiple listens did not help these albums:
Goblin "Il Fantastico Viaggio..."
Streetmark "Nordland"
System "What We Are"
I like the compositions and musicianship in Fusion Orchestra but just can't seem to tolerate the vocals.
Also, I'm a big fan of jazz / fusion and can listen to Return To Forever all day but can't get through one side of any album by Weather Report (great artwork on the covers though).
BTW...Have I mentioned Eno, even when he gets together with Fripp?

I've tried a few times to get into Dream Theater, but they just don't click with me. The musicianship is fine, but it doesn't add up to much IMO.

I just can't seem to get into ELP's Love Beach. I tell myself, "stare at the chest hair and you will understand," but it hasn't worked.
![]() Seriously, I'll have to ponder this question. I can say off the bat that I still don't get into the 'metal' side of prog. Just me. |

Actually many of my very favorite bands demanded some exploring. Some that come to mind right away are Genesis, Hatfield & The North, Tool and Miles Davis' best albums... This is why I encourage people to give time to the music. It might just work. |

Genesis. Not prog. What the hell.
In other news, I heard Robert Fripp is producing the new Hannah Montana album and Steve Wilson is working on remastering the Carpenters discography. |

Tell me. I challenge you to look on any prog site and see if you can find Genesis's exclusion on ANY site. Perhaps you are very young and unfamiliar with the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, which, in that case, you are spot on with your musings, but to suggest that Genesis from 1970-1974 was anything but prog just really reveals that you don't get what progressive rock is in the 1st place.
Now, go on and don't like them for all I care. That is just a matter of taste. One can handle that, but to sugfgest that EVERY prog site is wrong...well...that rubs me a bit wrong.

There's this British band, who's original singer was just too buzzy sounding, and the lyrics, I guess I wasn't British enough to appreciate them. The music was okay, but never quite complex enough for my tastes. The drummer was good, but when the singer left, he put down the sticks and tried singing, but he's buzzy sounding too.
I can't remember their name, it was something like "Je Ne Sais".
As for others, I can't get into anything that has those throw up in your throat vocals.

Goodness, finally someone else who gets it!.....Genesis, for me. They're great musicians, don't get me wrong....I just don't like their music that much and frankly, I didn't understand why they were included on this site. I think of them as pop, not prog.

^ I'm not a Neo-Prog guy, but I do find MARC CECCOTTI's later albums enjoyable:
