OK, Jazzman ... I DO agree, it's a bit harsh when talking about "your favorite drummer" vs "the BEST drummer".

Damn you, I AM a drummer!  A pretty good one, too, although I'm not surprised I didn't make the list.  :  )

The drummer in my band is the best one for my purposes, and he's only 16.  Never heard anyone else his age that good, he can do anything that the music needs

edit: definitely better than Peart

You get me wrong; I am not saying he is not a good drummer. All I am saying is that it is not "Peart", then nothing for a mile and then others. That is simply not true. Others are just as good as he. And that's a fact.,

Agreed.  Many others do approach his talent.

I know you are a fan Pierre Moerlen - there is another one who should be considered one of the best.

What i am a fan of is not important at all, and I certainly would not call Moerlen "the best", for reasons already given. There are dozens of excellent drummers. calling someone "the best" is a mixture of fanboyism and ignorance.

So musing on, for example, the greatest (ie "the best") composer, scientist, painter (artist) or architect of all times is an immature practice?

Odd that. I imagine that wherever people have got together for intelligent discussion, ever since we have been able to communicate intelligently presumably, debating who is the "best" has been pretty high on the topic list; best farmer, brewer, weaver, etc etc. In fact this "immature" practice has probably driven excellence since time immemorial.

How do you measure "best" when it comes to arts? By "arts" I mean everything that includes - painting, sculpting, playing music, composing music, acting, writing and so on? It all comes down to personal tastes, nothing more.

I didnt suggest that one could easily objectively define who is "best" merely that it isn't childish to speculate.

I don't think much of false modesty. I have been playing drums for more than twentyfive years now. One gets pretty good after such a long time.

I don't like to brag or be modest, but being modest is far, far worse.

It isn't false modesty to say "I'm a drummer too" without adding "and I'm pretty good too" That last bit couild be not used.

I sent you a link to our myspace

we don't have any of our real, composed songs up there, just lazy jams.  They were fun, though
