I'm with David on this one... don't really see what the big fuss about Tool is. Lateralus has some nice tracks, but yeah, a lot is pure, unadultered filler.

Lateralus is the closest thing to a masterpiece that Tool has made so far, but it isn't one. I'd say 3.5 stars at best.

Ænima is barely average, and don't get me started on Undertow or 10,000 Days.

What album are you referring to?

The s/t Daughters release. If you like metal or noise, you definitely need to check it out.

Yeah, I agree Tool's albums are a bit too long. That doesn't prevent them from being fantastic though (except Undertow).

I also don't understand why Tool gets praised so much for their use of mathematics. Meshuggah's use of math is much more complex and original IMO. And more of a mindf**k too. Rawks

Problem with Tool is, for some reason, they have a lot of crossover appeal.

I think what they did with the structure on Lateralus is f**king brilliant.

If we're comparing the degree of mathematics in each band, Tool would be Geometry Metal, and Meshuggah would be Calculus Metal.

That's because Tool still makes very melodic music, can be accessible at times (grunge influences), and has more mainstream appeal. Meshuggah abandons any traditional sense of melody and harmony in rock music, is atonal, is thrash-based, and is intentionally heavily inaccessible.

That being said, I think Meshuggah is still more influential on metal than Tool, but I think Meshuggah's more influential than Metallica, so take that for what you will. Tongue
