Cyclone is the black sheep, but frankly I don't get all the hate it receives. Yes it has grainy vocals on a track, plus drums and percussive ornaments, but like Dean pointed out earlier, many of TD's records feature other instruments than the synths - a lot of acoustic as well. Plus the big 'epic' is as powerful and poignant as any of their later pieces.

I previously really disliked Cyclone, admittedly because the vocals are seriously kinda bad. But now that I've heard some of their late '80s and '90s material, I've realized that Cyclone is still a moderate classic from their best era. The big epic is indeed epic.

Another one I hated until recently is Poland, which I now think is incredible.

Interesting points about Cyclone. Steve Jolliffe was the vocalist. Interesting how on Jolliffe's solo release there are hardly ever vocals present. He did release some great works ...like "Journey Out of the Body" featuring Tony Duhig from Jade Warrior. His back catalog was one of the greatest conributions to the electronic Berlin scene...although he was a late bloomer, he worked with T.D. much earlier and traveled the circles of the original Berlin scene. His original first 6 or 7 releases are awesome and he doesn't get much credit for his works. The vocals on Cyclone were probably a result of bad choices.

This thread pushed me into plugging a couple more holes in the collection.  Bought Force Majeure and Stratosfear today.  Force M is good but I need a couple more listens.  But Stratosfear has already got hold of my brain and three spins already.  In a perverse way I am glad I didn't buy them at the same time as others as it gives them a proper chance to melt in as well as its quite exciting !  Whooo Hoooo!

Yay!

Actually, this thread is turning into more of an Appreciation one, rather than a recommendation one. Perhaps it should be moved.

In response to the last post, I find both to be exceptional.

I'm in favor of this. I've been thinking about starting a prog electronic appreciation thread but I wasn't sure if anyone would contribute. Should I go for it?

I certainly would. Now I have started on the TD journey, I am interested in what people would recommend elsewhere in the sub-genre.

Years ago I was given some TD suggestions. I have Cyclone which I love dearly. Rubycon is only soso for me... i can listen to it as background but can't loose myself to it. I have heard Pheadra and was similarly underimpressed with it. So the suggestions I got centered around which TD albums featured the most electric guitar which is the part of Cyclone that sends me. So I lost the damn list before I acted on it.  Can yawl help me re create it? I love that burning intense guitar feel of cyclone and would love to hear a bit more if it. Thanks all.

I only have Phaedra, Exit, and Tangram at the moment, there are so many albums in their discography it's nuts! Shocked They must make albums in their sleep (which could explain the dreamy-like atmospheres as well as the name of the band itself, but I digress)!

This thread has prompted me to select all of the TD albums available on Spotify (which seems to be pretty much all of them) and put them onto a playlist.  For the last couple of days I have had this playlist running on shuffle for hours at a time.

I would like to retract the rather ill-informed statement I made in an earlier post about a lot of latter-day TD music being bland muzak.  In fact, on the contrary, the vast amount of music I have heard over the last couple of days has been consistently good.

I would recommend Spotify as a great way of checking out the vast TD catalogue.

Yes, absolutely. The TD collection on Spotify is rather vast, and I have also had  a long couple of listens.

I like The Sorcerer soundtrack.

Edgar Froese's Aqua was recorded at the time of the Virgin-era TD, can anyone tell me how it compares?
