Well I still maintain that they are one of the most well known and most respected of the lesser known. Today I was at a prog function and pretty much everyone there knew who they were and was a fan. This was mainly older fans too that I talked to not that it makes that much of a difference. They are a band that pretty much every real prog fan at least knows of. But yeah outside of prog circles not so much.

One day, I was at the music store, searching for the Genesis album I was missing. Then, beside Genesis, I saw Gentle Giant.
Omg I was happy. I live in Canada, so I thought I'd need to import them, since only a few albums were released in America. But well, I have their first 4 albums, and Mister Class and quality became my favorite song of all time.
They slowly regain popularity, which is an awesome thing. But I guess they doesn't get enough credit yet.

I was a kid in the 70's and even when I rediscovered prog in the late 80's it still took another 5 years or so until I found Gentle Giant listed in a dealers list. This would of been somewhere in the mid 90's.They are also in my (personal)top 10 favorite bands today but according to several articles they pretty much went unnoticed in their own country during their hay-day. Such a pity as the band really did deserve many more people to take notice of them. To me they seemed to be a band that hovers just under the radar that only people interested in older music or loves progressive rock will ever encounter.

Having said that, back in the day were in the top ten or twenty progressive rock band amongst my circle of prog loving friends back in the day. Certainly top ten for me.

^ though I'd add that [signed] bands who were less well-known than GG would be a bigger list

I disagree but it depends on who we are comparing them to. Are they as well known as YES, Genesis or KC? No.
|
If we're going to list bands that GG were less well known as then it's going to take a while...
|
What?

Hi all, this is my first post here--I am a looooong time progressive rock lover, and for some reason haven't even considered making my entry here. I am a progressive musician and composer as well.
On the subject: Gentle Giant is one of my all time and absolute favorites! I had a period in my life when I had to live only by myself and wandered a lot, and my only friends during this time was Gentle Giant. I have to say that this was a very precious time for me. I also remember in my youth, I recorded the radio release of Free Hand, on one of those God forsaken cassettes. I didn't know then who those guys were, I didn't know even the name of the album--I was six or seven grade then. So, some other stuff were recorded on top of Free Hand, and only one phrase was left out, the punchy repeat "that I'd change my mind". Years later I got back to that particular cassette and tried to find out what group and what album and what song that was. It took me years, decades, and I finally found it, when I bought Free Hand on a CD some 15 years ago. What a feeling! Greetings! |

I did see it. I agree with you actually believe it or not. ELP were and are a more popular prog band than GG. I was only wondering why GG didn't have more ratings on there albums. But then because you disagreed with me you had to turn this into a prog nuclear war and wage a full on assault on me and attack my opinions.
I still stand by what I said. I have seen just as many if not more mentionings of GG in the top five big five lists as ELP. Maybe we were looking at different lists I don't know. GG seem to me to have more of a cult following these days than ELP. This is my opinion. I repeat this is my opinion based on what I have witnessed and my past fifteen years on the internet looking up and researching prog. ELP are more well known over all but seemed to have lost respect among many hardcore prog fans but still get a lot of respect for their first five albums or so. I like both bands regardless. So to sum it up ELP are more popular even among prog fans(however, many of them are casual fans)but GG again imo seem to have more respect among the prog collectors and hardcore fans(other than just the casual fans). Again this is all my opinion. That's it. Now I'm done. Send me a pm if you want. But please have fun on here and enjoy the music. If I insulted you or anyone else on here I sincerely apologize. That was not my intent. Carry on.

I have no problem with any of this at all.
ELP were actually a classic rock band and fair better if you think of them like that while GG were a small but brilliant classical ensemble. They both have progressive ideas but came at it from totally different directions. ELP were always thinking about the 'show' . GG were about the music and nothing else.

But the thing is several don't consider RUSH as part of the first wave even though they weren't around in the seventies(go figure).
Actually that was a typo. I know very well that Rush were around in the seventies.

OK. I like both ELP and GG. Both great bands and ultimately that's all that matters. Not really hurt. I suppose we both just got a little carried away. Us prog fans are a passionate bunch.

not that long ago ELP had all first four studio albums in the top 250. Things are moving very quickly. There are a number of new albums that start in the top 100 after about 100 ratings and then sink without trace once they get to about 300 plus ratings. Viljans Oga , English Electric Part One and Grace For Drowing are no longer in the top 100 which surprised me actually. Haken The Mountain will be the next one to slip away into obscurity. Do we care about this? Not really
If you do a filter and only have albums with say 300 ratings then the outlook for ELP is much rosier. Keith Emerson will sleep a lot easier knowing that

No you didn't explain it. You were too busy trying to insult me and disrespect me and point out how you are right about everything and I'm wrong and not entitled to my opinion. If you did mention it it was weaved in between your condescension and insults and I didn't see it.

If you did not read it, that is not my problem. I never said you are wrong about everything. It is you who said earlier your opinion was a fact and shoved it down my throat. Here are your words again:
"ELP's popularity in hardcore prog circles is less than GG's. You just have to accept that fact."
You did not show ANY respect whatsoever for my opinions so your pleas that I insulted now fall on deaf ears. Kindly apologise for your above statement and take back your words and I shall take back any insults I levelled intentionally or unintentionally on you.
