I don't think it's so poor. There's a track by track analisys and the fact that Neal Morse is used to recycle bits of Spock's Beard is true. I don't care too much about lyrics when they are not interesting, otherwise how could I be a YES fan? About Morse I'm convinced about his honesty and even if I don't share his religious sentiments, I think he writes about his feelings, and it's a good thing. Said so, I think the reviewer has done the same with his own feelings about Christianity.

Seems like Transatlantic is in the eye of the storm here...no pun intended. Very belittling of Neal Morse and Christianity.
When will these numbskulls realize a well-written and succinct bad review is so much more effective.   The writer probably thinks he knocked it out of the park; "Oh the clever cutting remarks; Oh the delicious vitriol...I nailed it, baby!"Good grief.

Some spots of the review are fine, but they do seem secondary to ranting about the other things. There's other reviews around the Archives that concern Neal/Flower Kings, etc, where the writers have been a lot more restrained and subtle about not appreciating the Christian elements.

Perhaps as Christians, we can ask God to forgive the reviewer!

I don't see any problem in "not getting" the album (to some it might seem as a boring concept). Also his points about the music I can understand too (though not to the level of 1 star), it's the overall tone of the review which seems a bit "edgy" Embarrassed

You can always award an album a 1 star and talk about its negative points in an intelligent way.
Also, better being a 'tight arse' than a loose one......

If I was to rate reviews I'd give such a review one, maybe two stars. As a review it is rather poor and not a pleasant read. The writer seems a bit fuqxed up.

I don't review very much at all (partly because of time and priorities, partly because I'm usually better at writing about other topics) but I can't think of a single album on this site that would deserve only one star from me.  I know other people use the rating system a bit differently, but to me a one-star album is horrendously bad while a two-star is mediocre.  To be honest, I really don't think there's as much bad music out there as is often claimed; there's plenty of mediocre music, from contemporary pop/rock to amateurish bandcamp efforts, but in most of it I can find something good or affirmable and can identify in some way with the artist's perspective.  I still tend to be very critical about music but I can find beauty in practically anything despite my criticisms.

I don't have a problem with people who have a more negative take on music, though, so I won't judge anyone for having a lot of negative reviews.

^^ hmm that's not a good review in my opinion.

I think that in every 100 reviews you do, only 2 or 3 of them should be 1 star reviews.. they really should be reserved for the very poorest efforts, because it's frankly insulting.

If you give a 1 star review, I think you then have to work quite hard to justify your reasoning, especially if the album has been rated between 3/4 stars by nearly 60 other people.... and you have to justify yourself much more than for a 3 star review, and I'm afraid this reviewer just doesn't even start to do that.

If there's a band I really don't like or get, yet are incredibly popular with most other proggers (and I can think of a couple...) then I just wouldn't review it, as I'm not best placed to do so...

I'd just walk away, and think it would have been better of this reviewer had done the same...

Just looks like another crummy review to me; he does seem to have the specific goal of lowering the rating but it seems like he really sincerely hated it so it doesn't look like manipulation to me.  He is a terrible writer though.

An interesting review, on the brink of becoming abusive, but I can see why the reviewer can be upset. Is he manipulating the rating, or just providing an honest view? Maybe the latter... but worth discussing

That's basically what a review is supposed to do: inform the reader if they should purchase some product. I think if anyone reads that and shares similar feelings to the reviewer they will be well informed.

Yeah, I admit I was a bit hostile, but I also did describe that the album was more or less the same as the last, so if someone enjoyed the last, they could take that to mean that they would like it. Negative reviews can be beneficial as well. I know for a fact I have a few reviewers who I follow, to listen to stuff they give bad reviews to.

So how do you counter this:

Quote Well, we had our chat on our the FB site, and he admitted he worded thus his review to stir up this community as according to him there are a "bunch of tight arses" here, and he prefers "writing to other sites who have better taste."
So...

?

You were deliberately trolling the site. Why shouldn't the Admin team revoke your reviewing privileges, or your membership for that matter?
If you do not like the "tight arses" here then leave, don't resort to undermining the good work of people who want nothing but respect for their hard work.

No, it would be wholly inaccurate. You were being censured, not censored.

Personally I would have left the review "as was" since it said far more about you than it did of the album or artist. However, in general you should only put things in a review that you would wish to be said of yourself. If someone calling you a talentless hack would offend you then don't say it of other people. Being respectful isn't difficult, it should come naturally.
What?

Seeing as you're a Kiwi and you showcase a natural ability to write in English, I gather you can understand a simple word like rephrase
You haven't done anything but illustrate your overt teenager handicap, and that's just fine by me. I just wish you'd take it over to RYM and leave us be.
This is not only me telling you that your review is zapped, but this is furthermore a warning on my behalf. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. Last time you checked in with this site, you had the nerve of calling us dicks, because our ways of evaluating acts for the site didn't suit your tastes......and now you come back with thisErmm

We have guidelines. Just rewrite the parts which are not conformant. You can keep the concept, just avoid being offensive. You don't like Stolt, it's fine. You say he's a poor instrumentist, say why you think so.

I really don't understand why you insist on posting your review here when you obviously look down on PA as a community and also as a site to discuss progressive rock.
You said: "No no I posted it to PA to create a stir. I don't usually go there. I post my writing to other sites who have better taste."

Also if your goal was to educate us, show us the light, lead us to the world of real prog, then calling us stupid, and saying we have the wrong taste in prog, is the worst possible way to achieve it. Who's the "talentless hack" then?
