Hey if you dig Talking Book it’s fair to think you’ll dig Innervisions as well. Heck they could’ve been a double album for all I care
Besides the actual music and clever lyrics I absolutely love the earthiness and warmth running through the production. A lot of my fave funk/jazz/soul albums from around that time sounded similar like Funkadelic, Shuggie Otis, Herbie and The Temptations. Paired with a warm yet fairly neutral headphone like the HE500 (as well as my Valhalla 2) and you end up with pure ear-sauce of the highest caliber.

Oh and btw: After writing the looooong post yesterday I couldn’t quite escape the feeling of ‘missing out’ on those Floyd archival releases. So I look them up and see, to my horror, a pricetag of around 640€
...but hang on a minute? If I buy each volume seperately I can get the entire thing for something like a 160€?
Long story short: I’m waiting for Dramatis-ation, Devi-ation, Reverber-ation and Obfusc-ation to drop by.

I'm glad you enjoyed Acto Contínuo, David, I was afraid you might be bored with some of the acoustic stuff, since you don't understand the lyrics. But yeah, he had a great backing band on that album, it has a nice live in the studio vibe.

Understanding the lingo is the least of my concerns trust me
Most especially when the words are so beautiful..and I love Portuguese, also the faux-Brazilian take on it
Some times music is all the more powerful for being indecipherable. It can literally mean all and everything at once...just like you don’t need to understand the words to an Opera to get an emotional jolt.

Nice 81 selection btw...even if you forgot one of the best from that year

David, re: Floyd sets

I have all 6 of the box sets (‘65-‘67, ‘68, ‘69, ‘70, ‘71, and ‘72). They are certainly the holy grail for early Floyd fans. They were pricey but as huge a fan as I am (I was buying early Floyd bootlegs decades ago), I couldn’t refuse. It helped that I got it as a generous birthday present from Debra (I often get cold feet spending too much $ at one time).

Re: Neil Young Trans. It’s a good album, not great. It’s got the novelty of using synths and a vocoder, but it still feels like a Neil album. No reason not to try it if you generally like what he does, especially if you enjoy watching his frequent detours off the beaten path.

Recent listens. Bought a lot of vinyl over the weekend so the first 3 are from that haul.

John McLaughlin | Extrapolation
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band | Live
Sparks | Kimono My House
MX-80 Sound | Big Hits
Lou Reed | Berlin: Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse
Misfits | Legacy of Brutality
Joni Mitchell | Travelogue
Daryl Hall & John Oates | Abandoned Luncheonette

Speaking of vinyl, I saw an email last night from Superior Viaduct (a cool label) announcing a quick “spring cleaning sale” they were having (ending midnight last night) with 1/2 off selected items. So without a second thought I was able to snag vinyl repress copies of both The Faust Tapes and Battiato’s Clic album for $10 each. All this just as I was about to put my phone down and go to bed.

4 fine albums there. 1981 was nice in retrospect. My awareness of modern music was really starting to branch out and I was beginning to follow my dad’s example of building a collection.

Hot diggity I am so looking forward to those Floyd cds They should be in the mail tomorrow (Also ordered the De Lorians cd but it’s taking it’s sweet time).
I think it’s one of those Neil albums that I will eventually buy because I come across it in some store. I had a wonderful time listening to Mirrorball earlier on (perhaps Pearl Jam’s best album )
The Faust Tapes and Clíc on vinyl for 10 bucks a pop is just a sweet deal altogether. I love both of those albums. The latter has become something of a go-to listen recently. It’s just so intricately weird in this almost serene Krautrock manner. I think it’s what some refer to as ‘head-music’ only far removed from what one normally associates with ‘stoner-bands’.

Funny thing about vinyl. I was hording that sh*t like there was no tomorrow..yet with my current apartment situation I almost exclusively listen to music over headphones..and vinyl over headphones is not my thing. I love vinyls over the stereo, but those cracks and pops are not cool when funnelled directly into my ears.
So yeah now I am buying more cds again and contemplating such madness as buying a dirtcheap Soft Machine boxset with albums I already own on vinyl..but almost never listen to because of the format.
Similarly also looking at a Kate Bush one

I don't have that Jaivas album, David. I think I only heard it once a long time ago.

Nice finds, Steve! I hope the Faust LP wasn't an unofficial reissue, I almost bought one a while ago.
I find interesting to listen this way, it kind of brings me back although I wasn't born yet :P I think my father started his collection around that time but he was more into singles and compilations, very unlike mine.

About the Floyd sets, I'm really just interested in the quad mix of AHM.

Last night:
Patrick Vian - Bruits et Temps Analogues (The first time I heard it after reading his father. It seems like a soundtrack for the books, it's very much alike.)

That and the one with the parrot they made a little later are both albums worth investigating in with regards to Los Jaivas.
I’m really interested in the whole Floyd package as I see a lot of stuff that seems like embryonic versions of what was later to be...and with Floyd those alleyways, especially from around that time in their career, are deeply fascinating to me.

Last night was spent with a slew of 2019 albums looking much like the previous list I posted.
Then I I started putting on cds by chance. I have continued to do so this morning and afternoon

Jethro Tull - Benefit
Burial - Untrue
King Crimson - Lizard
The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms
Tim Buckley - Happy Sad
Free - Tons Of Sobs
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine
Neil Young w/ Pearl Jam - Mirrorball
Tim Buckley - Hello & Goodbye
Sly & The Family Stone - There’s A Riot Going On
Elephant9 - Atlantis (I had to check out the original track ‘Psychedelic Backfire’ after hearing their newest live thang. The track itself is a monster! Like a weird and wonderful mix of ELP and National Health on mescalin)
David Bowie - Heroes
Area - Arbeit Macht Frei
Grails - Doomsdayer’s Holiday
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Joy Division - Closer
Ariel Pink - Pom Pom

Pretty sure it's official, Superior Viaduct is a pretty well-regarded label specializing in repressing old obscurities like this, and doing a fairly good job with it in my experience.

I hardly ever listen on headphones anymore, though a lot of my daily listening is on earbuds either at my desk at work (like now) or on earbuds while I'm taking a walk or jog.  Either way I'm not focusing much on sound quality.
For the past month or so I've been documenting my collection in a new app called iCollect and it's taking forever (I have close to 800 entries so far and I haven't even gone near the CDs yet - I'm up to around "J" in the vinyl collection) but it's a labor of love, and a great excuse to sit with my collection and spin some LPs, a lot of which has ended up on my lists here lately.

Cool that you're getting the Floyd collections!  I still haven't even seen all the DVD content.  There's a ton of stuff there.

Last couple o'days:

Yo La Tengo | I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One - my fav 90s album, now have on vinyl
Kevin Harrison | Inscrutably Obvious - obscure early 80s avant electronica type stuff, similar to Residents. Rescued from obscurity by Superior Viaduct
Steve Roach | Dreamtime Return - nice New Agey stuff, with an Australian theme
Guerilla Toss | Twisted Crystal - their 2018 album.  Love this band.
Egg | Egg - not quite as great as Polite Force but still a fantastic album.
Don Bradshaw-Leather | The Distance Between Us - been a while.  mannnn.....
Mahavishnu Orchestra | Apocalypse - John Mc gets a new band (incl Jean-Luc Ponty), enlists the London Symphony Orchestra, and gets George Martin/Geoff Emerick to produce/engineer.
MX-80 Sound | Crowd Control - 3rd album. more instrumentals, fewer vocals, gnarly guitar parts

Mew | And the Glass Handed Kites - first time all the way through this.  Impressive.
Nascita della Sfera | Per una Scultura di Ceschia - an old Italian avant favorite.  Still hoping to get this in a physical copy someday.
No Age | Nouns - fuzzy distorted guitar/drum indie rock.
Parquet Courts | Light Up Gold - quirky egghead indie rock. "Stoned and Starving" always makes me smile.
Sebadoh | Rocking the Forest -- rocking indeed.  Great EP by this (you guessed it) indie band.  GIMME INDIE ROCK! as the first track says, namedropping all the indie darlings of the day ("Breaking down the barriers like Sonic Youth / They got what they wanted, maybe I can get what I want too")
Alice Cooper | Zipper Catches Skin -- really fun Coop album from his oddball early 80s short-hair new wave period
MGMT | Congratulations -- interesting (if a little contrived) psychedelic indie pop. nicely produced.
Julian Cope | World Shut Your Mouth -- I'm on a Julian kick again.  What an amazing talent.

Rockin the schiit eh with 500’s.
Very cool. Fantastically neutral is a real Harmon Target of frequency’ response.
I really enjoy Talking Book, Dave. It has soul and it was recorded with some real and impressive life like energy. Love the album on my LCD XC. The HD 800’s I’ve sadly not been able to bring out of the stable due them being an open back. They wake the kid!
Anyhow I’m gonna check out innervisions next. Thanks a lot for the rec. Stevie has soul, brother!

And yeah, those Pink Floyd sets are so grossly overpriced it drives me nuts. The worst is the “later years “ boxset. 486$ Canadian . Not only that the dvd and bluray crap of material duplication exists again. Talk about padding a boxset. It isn’t 18 discs. It is really 11. The whole thing is ridiculous and they certainly won’t get my money. They’ll have to break up the set.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

More albums played

Julian Cope | Jehovahkill — a real stunner
Robin Trower | Long Misty Days — one of his best
T. Rex | Tanx — Bolan’s one wigged out dudester
Tim Buckley | Sefronia — underrated late-period album
Tim Buckley | Blue Afternoon — jazzy mid-period album
Paul Kantner/Grace Slick | Sunfighter — nifty transitional album on the way to J. Starship. Seems to be a common theme of being born and growing up in the moden world (China Kantner had just been born)
Stevie Wonder | Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants — ambitious synth-proggy detour that must have confused his fans
Peter Jefferies | Clutter (ltd ed of 150) — New Zealand piano/drum/singer/songwriter who’s been in a few underground bands. Like a more nasal John Cale.
Klaus Schulze | Mirage — the man, the myth, the legend. Let’s have a big hand for Klaus (*applause*)

Like I mentioned you’ll absolutely adore Innervisions if you love Talking Book. Those two albums are mandatory Stevie material.
Fantastically neutral is a tuning made specifically for the HE500 - I thought you knew
I do actually own a headphone with a Harman Curve response..in fact I’m wearing it right this minute because burly men in hard hats are tearing up the asphalt right down my window. The K371. Possibly the best bang for one’s buck if we’re talking closedbacks imho. Besides the actual SQ it is also remarkably comfy. Literally disappears on my head after 3 minutes.
(Maybe we should fire up the Dolly den again for this type of silly talk?)

I saw José mentioning the Later Years boxset and it having it’s own gigantic thread over on the Steve Hoffman site...but man I am not even prepared to go here yet
I mean I just got a truckload of Floyd in through the outdoor...and now folks are telling me about even more?? Nuts!
Oh well I may look into it later down the road if the price dwindles down a little..or similarly if they start making individual sets available for purchase.
I’m not too keen on boxsets anyway. I was considering the early KC ones for Larks and Red but then saw cd after cd with the same tracks ad nauseum...sure played live but errr...yeah..
The early years thing from Floyd though is different in that it delivers music that I never owned a hardcopy of before (Pompeii and BBC Sessions) as well as live gigs of stuff I’ve never heard before...and it’s from my fave period of the band.
With KC I already own so much live stuff from around their magic era..I hardly felt the need to splash out that amount of dough only to posses a beaitiful boxset ( ‘my precious’ it says).

Hey troopers, have not logged on in awhile, have been taking a break from it all so to speak but have been popping in to look at posts.  Lots of interesting listening as usual I see.

^I am leery of boxsets also, either I have some or most of the albums or its the cost.  Early Floyd stuff does sound very intriguing.  Same with me on the KC live stuff, I mostly have 1 or 2 from the prime years and I have 2 from the year I saw them in 2017 (Chicago and Meltdown in Mexico with a DVD which is awesome).

Been and going to weed through some stuff (CDs) I have picked up recently at record shows, flea markets, and thrift stores.  Basically going to re-listen since I finally broke down and got myself a budget, hybrid tube headphone (and speaker if you wanted) amp, a Fosi T20 which I will revisit in Dollyland :), but having fun with it and order some better tubes for it which should arrive tomorrow.

Anyway, latest listens and re-listens:
Dire Straits - s/t
JJ Cale - Travel-Log (really enjoy this one, great songwriter)
Spooky Tooth - You Broke my Heart So...I Busted Your Jaw (just love that title)
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew - Live
Jon Anderson - Change We Must
Miles Davis - Nefertiti
Gong - You
Gentle Giant - Three Friends
Jeff Beck - Who Else (Space for Papa just gets in my skin)
Alison Krause and Union Station - New Favorite (most haunting beautiful voice I think I have ever heard, its Blue Grass but enjoyable)
Steppenwolf - At Your Birthday Party
Brian May - Back to the Light
Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - The Sky is Crying
Dan Folgelberg - The Wild Places
Peter Frampton - Classics volume 12 (50 cents well spent Big smile)
