My final selections with a little more thunking. Kudos to a very inventive and difficult poll. Everyone wins with these.
![]() 1. Wha
Ha Ha - On the Floor ~ I could certainly hear this being the soundtrack to
a video game or a cartoon….There is the repeated phrase, which could be
addictive to some, but this one doesn’t do it for me. It does make me laugh, not at it, but with
it, so it gets some points for that, but won’t be a contender for me. Or so I thought. Then I found myself later on hearing it in my
mind’s ear. This was the oddball
contender for me. It was just very much
an earworm, even though I can’t say I like it. 2. Sweet
Fingers - Good Night Robots ~ Actually, this one reminds me of a song from way
back in the 1970’s, if it were played on a warped LP, so the progression and
the dynamics are familiar to me, but it’s not the same song at all. Maybe this is why I like it over other things
I’ve heard in this genre? It may be a nostalgic
pick for me, but I am going with it for 2nd spot. 3. King
Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle ~ Now I really enjoy some space
rock/psychedelia. Harkening back to my
SF roots like Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Enjoy the repetitive meditative raga-ish guitar sounds here and the
psychedelic tremeloes and such…Vocals are a little “marchy,” and kinda
“alienish,” to me, but the castles are crumbling, after all and they could be
on another planet. Or maybe they’re
ants, who knows? Still trying to decide
between aliens or ants. Pondering this
with the melody has earned it 3rd spot. 4. Honourable
Mention: Dr. Dopo Jam - Cowboy Song
~ Loved the opening, Monty Python to
Zappa. Then cowboys! Moving to Montana soon? Love the humour, and an epic tale to boot. I don’t know how catchy it is, but it gets my
quirky side happy. It was tough to
decide between this cowboy and the castle one.
Finally I went with the castle. |

I'm excluding ones I know very well.
WHA-HA-HA is a favourite of mine but I've had an loved the album it's off for many years. I am surprised that it hasn't been rated or reviewed more at PA. Likewise, I know the Chrome Hoof very well (I suggested and added the band to PA for Pre-Emptive False Rapture). The Antique Seeking Nuns and Lucio Battisti I also knew too well to consider. So, it will be between the others (with the exception of Dr.Dopp Jam since that was my song selection). Since I thought this was about music with singing, my misunderstanding of the expectations of the song term, I am going to limit my choices to what I call songs or at least has minimal vocals. Sweet Fingers - Good Night Robot: I really loved that! The Legendary Pink Dots - Princess Coldheart: very nice (have heard it before, but can't say I knew it well). King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle (also might have have heard it, but at least had never properly listened) Could have just as easily gone with The Mr. Albert Show as some others - I'm not more than a Sign (almost did), and lots more to like. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland - Crumbling Castle: Good composition in 5/4 (among other time signatures). Not entirely my taste, but I do like a lot of the guitar work, especially when it becomes disharmonic, as it does around 8:00. At times there is a voice that sounds like central Asian throat singing. Dr. Dopo Jam - Cowboy Song: Slightly humorous intro. The bass figure reminds me of something, and if you say what it is, I would probably think of course. There's even a reference to "Sex Machine" by James Brown. The vocals are slightly theatrical at times, and he should have kept from singing in English. I don't dislike the song. Antique Seeking Nuns - Double Egg. I really like the guitar riff in the beginning. Also Fender Rhodes. Fine composition. Not a big fan of the singing style. Sweet Fingers - Good Night Robots. Terribly off-key instruments, and I strongly believe it is on purpose. As a means of expressing disharmony or disorder of sorts. Interesting twist to what might otherwise have been a rather straight forward piece of traditional prog. The noisy guitar sound coming in later is another twist. Alan Stivell - Pop Plinn. The intro says traditional 70's prog to me, especially with that organ sound. This style doesn't really do it for me. Purposeful Porpoise - Unexplored. Again rather un-edgy in my perception. Doesn't do it for me, but tastes differ. Edited by The Anders - July 03 2020 at 06:36 |

"Very different from previous tracks" is the biggest compliment, thanks! If I'm well informed, they are originally English but moved to the Netherlands quite some time ago (not sure whether that was before Princess Coldheart though).

Hi,
Sorry ... I lost complete interest. Besides, I wanted to post "Close To You" from a band that was related to Tony Levin way back when, but could not find it ... even though I have it on tape from my friend's shows! It's a comedy version of the Carpenters song, Very well done, and funny!

Moshkito, do you get as far as reading the first post of this topic before losing interest? I am genuinely curious. If that song is not off an album included in a Prog category at PA (and has less than 50 ratings), then it would not be includable. When someone says something like "Sorry ... I lost complete interest", I would be interested to read some elaboration.

Hi, I have more albums in my collection that fit the description ... just busy with better things to do ... I have an article that has a deadline, and is much more important than fun stuff right now. The only thing I don't want "catchy" is that virus! FOUND IT .... The Clams (Pete Levin)

Hi, The only problem is that no one else will ... the list, for my tastes is too blaze and not unique ... although there are a couple of things that are nice ... but catchy? I'll go back to my LP days and play Eric backwards ... was way better than the originals! Maybe if I post a link for ... "let's take a trip down Whittier Boulevard!" ... it might get some folks going!

Of course the Clams are not in PA, so that couldn't have been included whether people liked it or not.
I find this catchy and almost went with it (twas a very early thought), but then thought, I don't think others would find it catchy (I wish I didn't second guess myself as much, too little confidence, and it matters more to me that it is catchy to me). I was pleased with my Dr. Dopo Jam selection, though, but I'm actually not really sure why I didn't go with an After Dinner (a lowly rated band that I really like -- I love Hako for various work). While various people liked the Dr. Dopo Jam, I would have preferred this as my selection. . Catchy is in the ear of the behearer. Finding a "catchy" song (which I interpreted as having vocals and words) included on an album in a Prog category in PA with less than 50 ratings took me more thought than I expected. I came across a number that I then saw had 51 ratings. Art Pop in PA could be an obvious place to start and when I saw Big Science by Laurie Anderson (who is in Crossover) had more than 50 ratings,I should have looked to her other albums. My favourite of these is the WHA-HA-HA (first band that came to my mind as I recall when I saw this topic). To me 'On the Floor" is interesting and strangely infectious Had this been a "non-Prog" round, I would have liked to nominate an Achoo! Bless You song (not for the music), but just for the catchy name. There is a band called Infictious in Crossover which is quite an infectious name. By the way, I'd love it if you would host one of these (one would need to volunteer and there is a queue, I'd be interested to see your approach and topic -- and I would rather be surprised by your subject matter and approach). I'm up next, and I do hope you participate -- I have a feeling that your entries and thoughts on the choices might be interesting. Edited by Logan - July 05 2020 at 09:50 |
