After last week's promise I give you several examples of Peter Hammill - prog and punk - including another track from the new collaborative album with Isildurs Bane. Jazzy guitar from Nguyen Le and Pat Metheny. Obituary moments for the Everly Brothers and Michael Chapman. Several dips into the back shelves of the archives and other new releases.

Officially back for the 35th Season ... although probably been around longer... the Alternative Alternative Show from LCR. There has been an excellent crop of new music over the summer break, some of best I intend playing over the next couple of Thursdays. Favorites include the chamber punk of the third album by Lung, chamber rock of the string players the Attacca Quartet, and the September 2021 release from Peter Hammill and Isildurs Bane. And mustn't forget to mention the innovative new London jazz from Sons of Kemet. Gary Lucas offers some experimental electronica as La Beast Concrete. Fun folk from Ringlefinch and much more.

And while I'm here, the monthly ALT2 Show variant that goes out on the Album Zone, is available for streaming via the Mix Cloud (under 'Dick Heath')... up to the July 2021 edition.

The last new show before LCR closes for the university's undergrad summer break - hopefully we'll back late September/October. Jazz/jazz fusion from Julian Lage, Charnett Moffett, Skuli Sverrissen, Squarepusher and Wayne Krantz. An unusual one from Asia, otherwise prog from Nadjiwan, Muse, Moron Police, The Mar Volta. Something from Frank Zappa's last American tour. Film scorist Danny Elfman does rock. Folk from Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Laterns On The lake, I Am Oak, Chloe Foy. Then some blues, punk and world.

We do belive this week is the penultimate week of radio broadcasting of presented shows from LCR. The show for the 17th is the familiar mix of old and new from a wide variety of musics. Favorite proggie stuff includes Victor G, Jack O'The Clock, Box Of Crayons. Yet another reissue of Tony Williams' Arcana. Future releases from Pearl & The Oysters and the cello punk of Lung. Wolrd music by Anoushka Shankar. Summery joy from Califorina's The Kelp Dwellers. ZZTOP type sounds from Billy Gibbons. And folk of several sorts.

Nu jazz from Go Go Penguin and Eivind Aarset/Jan Bang, jazz rock from RTF, new jazz from Dave Holland and Lars Danielsson, 'Indo' jazz by Jaubi. A broad variety of progressive musics from from Ethos, Pavlov's Dog, The Kelp Dwellers, Victor Go,  David Sylvian, Rundgren/Wakeman/Levin and Jack O' The Clock. A spot the difference moment: Booker T & the MGs OR Cream? And then straight rock and blues to fill in the gaps in between of a 2 hour programme.

Even after 12 months plus of close down, the year has gone fast and we are not far from reaching LCR station close down for the university's summer break. However, not quite yet and of course there is the Album Zone variant every month along with a few additional specials. May edition is being broadcast sometime in the next week and everything to March 2021 is now available for streaming anytime.

Back to the LCR version and what's on tomorrow night's playlist. Exciting 70's jazz (funk) from Gary Bartz, plus jazz rock from RTF and Spain's Iceberg, the new jazz from London's Sons Of Kemet. Intriguing experimental music from the late Hector Zazou (the recently remastered 'Geographies'), The Warp Trio, Booker Stardrum, Jack O' The Clock. Prog from the obscure(?) Box of Caryons and Ambigram. Folk by Dr Strangely Strange and John Martyn. And then is other great music including for the depths of the archives String Cheese (no not String Cheese Incident).

After last week's show of 1971 releases, the majority of tunes played this Thursday are from recent releases. Modern jazz from Go Go Penguin, Sons of Kemet, Will Frye and Alfa Mist. Indie rock from Sara Bug, Toma. Older recording by Phil Manzanera and 10cc, CSNY, Al Stewart, Pink Floyd and Renaissance. I think a pretty good mix to relax to and listen.

Fired the excessive advertising by BBC Radio 4 for their programme on the relevance of Marvin Gaye's 1971 album What's Going On, I decided to do a show of popular music each also celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2021. I found enough material to fill several 2 hour programmes. The albums picked range from those that sold millions of copies, to one that sold 200 copies, (turns out I bought one of those back then) and another only 70 copies. Albums that made musicians and albums that did very little, with the musician disappearing almost without trace.

We are back on LCR after the academic Easter break, with more new releases and raids into the archives. Jazz flavoured music from Dave Weckl Band, Norah Jones, Kim Sajn, Throttle Elevator Music. Great folk by Sinikka Langeland (reminding me of the Jan Garbarek/Agnes Buen Garnas collaboration in the 80's), (the forgotten?) Marian Segal & Jade, and the grande dame Peggy Seeger. Archival stuff by Circles, Devo, Peter Gabriel. Obliviously prog including some real treats from the newie by Motorpsycho. And keyboard maestro Stale Storlokken (he of Elephant9) exploring the sounds of an antique pipe organ..... very different from his heavy music. And forget to check out the Album Zone for many streamable show recordings.

The last show before a 4 week Easter break. Jazz from Hedvig Mollestad trio (released last Friday), Leni Stern (not released yet), Germany's Tombajazz (released over a year ago... promo arrived last week), Gretchten Parlato, Jakob Bro, Afro-jazz from Kiazi Mlonga. Women & men blues duos in the form of the Nova Hawks and When Rivers Meet. Lots of rock, including more from the North Finish band Gajanas (with, I guess, some Sami throat singing). And one bit of Anglo folk. Lest I forget, Bowie singing in German. BTW the few of your who will miss the ALT2 Show for the next few weeks, you can get lots of alternative varieties of the ALT2 Show (aka the Dick Heath Show) at the Album Zone site... Feb 2021 edition is now up.

The new ALT2 Show is just over 5 hours away. New and old vocal jazz from Gretchen Parlato and Robert Flack. Most enjoyable English folk from the depth of the countryside by Ninebarrow. Contributions from Poland, Argentina, Italy, France and blues from Turkey: excited by the Sami influence rock by Gajanas from N. Finland. In other words the  expected broad musical sampling from new and old releases.

Did you know the so called grandfather of British blues, Chris Barber died on the 5th March? My usual sources were quiet, eventually discovering the sad news of Radio 4's obituary programme i the last few days. So 4 tracks dedicated to the memory of Chris Barber. Indeed the show is rather jazz and blues heavy. New music by Colin Cannon, Plini, Diego Rivera, William The Conqueror, Invisible Sessions. Further mining of the great recent British folk compilation, 'Sumer Is Icumen In'. And for the second week I avoid a new release in favour  of an older one by a band.... the quality of recording of the newie being awful. And then there is a bit of Hammond organ.

Women singers heavy tonight, giving a really broad range of genres, including Ana Patan, Inga Rumpf, Najma Akhtar, Sonja Kristina, Snowpoet and Birthday Ass. New jazz from the heirs of Femi Kuti, R+RNOW, Elephant9, Magma, Softworks and of course I continue to remind you of Chick Corea's legacy. And the inevitable proggie bits.....

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you had a more than reasonable Christmas and New Year holiday.  Details of the next show to go out on LCR next Thursday at 9pm GMT, is below. It is slightly more blues heavy than normal, including Blues Etilicos, Eric Clapton, Mick Pini/Chris Youlden, Tomas Doncker. Jazz from Oz Noy, Stickmen/Gary Husband, Tankus The Henge, DBQ. There are several shades of folk and the archives raided. Also nice rearrangements of familiar tunes from Ann Wilson and the late Chris Cornell.

The Album Zone have made my Panto Special available for streaming in the last 7 days, in reality this is two hours worth of  tracks from rock operas, concept albums and tribute albums. Awaiting the first broadcast of the December edition of the show through TWCfm. In passing does anybody want links to recordings of the ALT2 Show broadcast by LCR through November and December 2020?

More recent releases plus the odd archived album. Greatly enjoying the forthcoming album by Michael Wimberly. A belated discovery of a 1986 recording by Allan Holdsworth. Illustrations of the Frank Zappa's musical range. Nima of the reat street band Merge has supplied and allowed me to play a tune from his recent YouTube musical clip. The French rock artists do things differently. And something for Chris R: "Christmas Death Metal" - 3 shorts each at the beginning, middle & end of the programme, plus a long one which have Bing Crosby whirling in his grave.

I hope to be back during the second week of January and of course several seasons of alternative ALT2 Shows can be streamed at the Album Zone.

Have a great Christmas and New Year.
