I'm a tad surprised that Captain Beyond and Lift haven't gotten more votes, (er, well at least Captain Beyond; Lift is probably not too well known, but it is some amazingly good 70's Symphonic Prog Rock from the US (New Orleans).  Sounds like they really could have gone far, but they're kind of a one-album wonder: 



Captain Beyond was also started in the US (Los Angeles)--a kind of Supergroup with ex members of Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly.  Has a Psychadelic Hard-Rock sound:

"To be over" for me. My second favorite Yes song. If "Love over gold" was on the list I would have had an internal conflict to deal with.
