Is it "writing outrageous things day" today? Is it "baiting day'? What's going on?

![]() The Party's Over for Talk Talk's excellent debut, but the party's just beginning for Synth Pop, as this is a real classic from the era and The Last Time you'll hear an album as good as this from Mark Hollis & Co. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - April 16 2022 at 09:04 |

Sorry I thought the bands in the poll were based on members votes? You're going to then edit out bands based on your tastes? Either do it based on your tastes or do it based on votes. Don't edit what other people like and pretend there's any other input. |

Swans - Filth: Truly awful! I had a bad feeling I wasn't going to like this album, and so it proved. This is so bad, it sounds like a bunch of people got together to randomly hit bits of furniture and make a noise. I can't believe anyone would pay good money to listen to this. If these are Swans, then this tuneless mess of an album is the ugly duckling that nobody wants, so it's no surprise that no one voted for Swans in the poll. Remind me not to include any Avant Prog in future polls. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - April 16 2022 at 06:46 |

I was surprised too, as I was expecting to like the album., having been very impressed with the debut from The Neal Morse Band. Ideally, I'd like to have skipped the vulgar "F.U. rant" if it wasn't part of a 23-minute-long suite. Logically, I think Spock's Beard can only get better from hereon, so I look forward to hearing their later albums.

^^ You surprise me Paul, production issues aside (greatly improved on the IO remaster), it's a very assured solid 4 star debut, show-casing plenty of talent and promise. Personally, I've always been very fond of it. Of course, much has been made of the F.U section in 'The Water'; NM refused to sing the lyrics a relatively short while afterwards, having converted to Christianity, but you don't tend to portray tortured human angst my singing 'Oh, fiddlesticks', do you? Don't let this put you off; their discography, especially during the NM years, is exceptionally strong.

Spock's Beard - The Light: a disappointing Prog-Rock album that starts off promisingly enough but then gets progressively worse. It could have been a decent 3-star album if it wasn't for the indecent and unwelcome foul-mouthed rant on Track 3, titled "F.U. I'm Sorry", which ruins the whole album. I wish I'd left this album in the dark, as it's not for the faint-hearted.

I like Anglagard too, but for me, and maybe this is just hubris, but Anglagard can't compete with any of the Neo Prog bands in the poll.

Oh boy oh boy, how can a symph prog clone beat one of the most (if not the most) original and successful neo-prog bands? I must be getting old...

On a positive note, I'm looking forward to hearing Spock's Beard, Transatlantic and Wobbler for the first time ever, which I'm sure will be more to my tastes.

I predict you'll hate both, give them a try, I've never heard Swans early stuff but the later stuff is very good. Thinking Plague got better after the first two but they certainly have their charms for fans of this stuff. |

^ I'm rapidly going off Avant Prog, having listened to the debut albums by the Cardiacs, Guapo & Present and given them all the thumbs down, which doesn't bode well for me liking the upcoming debuts by Swans or Thinking Plague either.

Even not being usually an Avant-Prog/RIO aficionado, I find this bit interesting.

Solstice: the Best of British Neo Prog, sounding remarkably like YES on "Peace" - the first track from their first album.

I noticed Present and Mostly Autumn are presently on four votes each in the poll, so any prog credibility I had left remaining has just taken another plunge.

Check the rating, it's 4.29, there are loads of people who are into this type of music who recognize it's excellence. It's dissonant by design. Your beloved Mostly Autumn is a 3.5.
By all means don't like it but don't call it a shambles. |
