The penultimate show before the Christmas break, this, in part, recalls the music of the late Christine Perfect/McVie: I hope to avoid the obvious tunes played in tribute by other radio stations. Jazz from: Robeone (here a tribute to Brian Auger and Keith Emerson), Bill Bruford's Earthworks, new acid jazz by Str4ta, Roy Ayers, Branford Marsalis on a Sting recording. More blues from John Hammond Jr with the Nighthawks, Robin Trower, the late Wilco Johnson and Roger Daltry. The more folky sounds of: Jackson Browne, The Deer, Doctor Fish. And then much much more.

Round to December already. A recently discovered solo album by Esbjorn Svennson means a track gets played, as well as starting with prize winning EST. The Brixton blues of Errol Linton again gets featured after my second view of the band live, what a tight band. Talking blues, amazingly they have found another album's worth of music from the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Christmas is coming along with the compilation albums, here Foo Fighters and Argent. Hedwig Mollestad has a welcomed new album. Dr Fish with a single released tomorrow. A tribute to Harry Chapin who would been 80. Wilco Johnson died last week, so has to be included. [Too late for a tribute to Christine McVie (ne Perfect) but three less familiar tunes by one of the finest British songwriters of the 20th century, scheduled for next Thursday]. And much much more. Join me at 9pm GMT tonight

Interesting jazz from London-based Edrix Puzzle to kick the show off. Plus more jazz from the Robert Glasper Experiment, Bill Frisell. A couple from 30 years ago: Jeff Buckley backed by Gary Lucas, Donald Byrd fusing jazz with hiphop. Enjoying the 2022 remastered Steely Dan 'Can't Buy A Thrill', still fresh after 50 years. Various world music from kora-player Dawda Jobarteh, and Afgan rubab-player Nasim Khushnawaz. Unsure about the Boss's new covers album, and something quite different, a rock quartet rearranging and playing Dvorak's American String Quartet (feedback welcomed). Folk sung in Welsh by Plu, my first play of the Welsh language since playing Gorgi's 'Barafundel' many years ago (btw Barafundel is one of the best beaches in the world). And lots more.

A fairly strong injection of the French avant garde tonight: Jean-Michel Jarre, Lasry Baschet (aka Les Structures Sonore), Pierre Henry (with Anglo-American band Spooky Tooth), and Magma. Jazz by the re-formed Headhunters, Ezra Collective, Cunningham-Laurenzi-Bryan and the Horse Lords. Devin Townsend's heavy/prog rock with personal favorites Jonas Hellborg and Morgan Agren somewhere in the mix; other prog from Polish band Fren. Pop from Wolf Alice, Sloan. World music: Tinariwen. Plus plenty else to tease and hopefully enjoy, and so fill out approximately 2 hours. Join Me at 9pm GMT tonight.

PLEASE NOTE UK clocks went back an hour this last weekend, EDT goes to EST on 6th November, therefore 4hr behind the UK for one week only, PST will be 8 hr behind for one week.
A variety of jazz from Mark Guiliana, Keef Hartley Band (the 7 CD boxset that this come from, is great value), Oscar Jerome, DiMeola-McLaughlin-De Lucia, Joe Deninzon (with Alex Skolnick). A brief dip into the Shulman brothers' discography. Taking advice on electronica from James D, so expect to see a slight increase played here: this tiem Macula Dog, Danny Elfman with Squarepusher, Stick In The Wheel - the latter two aremore examples of electronic treatments. The other odd bit of instrumental music, and very much more.

Dipping further into the new Snarky Puppy and Blue Note Re:Imagined albums; another Mark Guiliana album fusing electronica and jazz. More nostalgia: after playing Man recorded live at here last week, Nucleus recorded here at Loughborough University, also early 1976. Jazz meets techno (I'm told), by Jazzrausche Big Band. Archives raided for the Mamas & the Papas, Everly Brothers and Love. Blues of various sorts from Rory Block, Keef Hartley Band, Bernie Marsden. Quirkiness from Samla Mammas Manna and Macula Dog. of course folk and rock, and much more.

No apologies, this Thursday's show has proportionally more old recordings than usual, including Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, Bob Marley, Atlantis, Babe Ruth, Electric Prunes, Nazz, CCR, Rory Gallagher and a recording made here at Loughborough University in 1976 of the Welsh rockers, Man. Then the new: more from Snarky Puppy's newie 'Empire Central' (which I take to be in Texas?), the primitive folk (apparently) of the Elijah McLaughlin Ensemble, my current favorite album of electronic nonsense by Macula Dog, Primus is always welcome, a somewhat new sounding The Bad Plus, (new to me) Whiskey Myers, Titus Andronicus. Then a few others....................
Back to normal next week?

French trip hop from UTO. Electro pop from Imogen Heap and Macula Dog. Archives delved for Nazz and Electric Prunes. The return of The Mars Volta. Then much more.

I hope you had a great summer and avoided Covid. Charlotte, our new Station Manager, has invited me back, and hope you can join me for at least some of the time and most weeks until next June, 9pm BST/GMT on Thursdays.
As ever I've selected a collection of old and new releases, from a broad range of music genres: rock, pop, prog, electronica, folk, jazz, world and sometime serious music. So this Thursday expect jazzy stuff from: Soft Machine, I Like To Sleep, Alta Forma (friend of the show, Antoine Fafard's new band with an album out in December), Kokoroko, Mark Guiliana, Trombone Shorty. A variety of rock: Motorpsycho, Muse, Porcupine Tree, Steve Hackett, Megadeth, UTO, etc. World: Taj Mahal, Madalitso Band, The Three Seas. Folk: Bryony Griffith & Alice Jones, Doom Flower, Ethan Wood. And so on. Enjoy.
BTW, check out The ALBUM ZONE site, for archived monthly 'Dick Heath Shows'.
Let me know what you think and for requests via this email address.

This is the last broadcast until at least the end of September and is largely a show of musicians' albums I've played and enjoyed over the last 9 months and/or got positive listener feed back. However, spot the new albums not played previously. One of which is the new Bubblemath LP 'Turf' Ascension'. I've enjoyed their other albums, as ones giving something pretty new in the field of progressive music. The kind folks at Cuneiform sent me an electronic preview copy several weeks ago, with the request not to air this publicly until the 20th of this month or later. The embargo is off although I've had several private sessions listening to the whole - marvellous. You can hear a track from it at the end of the show. Other prog tunes included are taken from other superior albums released in the last 12 months, include those by: Hats Off Gentlemen, Its Adequate(Malcolm Galloway at his very best) and Peter Hammill/Isildurs Bane. Jazz and fusion from Gary Husband & Alf Terje Hana (aka The Trackers), Mark Lockheart, Portico Quartet, Ogun Afrobeat, Markus Reuter and Pat Metheny. From the number of times I sampled Michael League's album 'So Many Me', meant it had to feature here. John in Ilkeston, the other day flagged up League's Snarky Puppy's new single on You Tube; the long version is a must. New SP album soon and they are appearing in London's Wembley Area in October. A variety of other sorts of rock from +1, Joe Bonamassa, Voka Gentle, Ann Wilson, (the chamber punk of) Lung. Enjoyable live folk by Steeleye Span (with their American audience lapping it up), Ian Hart and Bird In The Belly. And those not mentioned so far: Bob Marley, Erich Clapton, and last but not least more (new?) rearrangements of Vivaldi.

Following on from the quiz last week, I can reveal the answer is Bill Bruford's new boxset/retrospective 'Making A Song & Dance', from which 6-7 tracks were picked. Two more BB tunes tonight: an alternative and the original version of 'Beelzebub' and a favorite from David Torn's back catalogue. Really hooked by Trombone Shorty's 'Lifted' album, funkier jazz from Lettuce, and something special by Shabaka (Hutchins). Then there is the Jazzrausch Bigband jazzing with techno, and Airto's Brazilian dance. Something for the aforementioned John: Ian Siegal's latest; also favs with me Chris Youlden with Savoy Brown.and Electric Flag, plus Simon McBride (following the footsteps of fellow Irish blues guitarists, Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore). Old folk by Dulcimer, new by Nick Hart. Last week I played something from Mark Moogy Klingman's first album, so had to go to Utopia's first for the long last tune for the evening. Other prog by Dopapod, and that super album by Thanks You Gentlemen, Its Adequate. Rock of several colours from Orion Tango (heavy!!), Doris Brendel, Bruce Hornsby, Graham Bonnet Band and Imogen Heap. Join me tonight for the penultimate show of this academic year (Oct 2021 - June 2022): next week a review of the last 9 months feature albums, with something from Bubblemath Math's new one.

There is something common about 7 tracks being played this Thursday night, can you work out the link? Allsorts of jazzy fusion from Kazumi Watanbe, Trombone Shorty, Bruford, Earthworks, Brian Jackson, Jazzrausch Bigband, and I might even include the Chris Squire's tune. Progressive music from the RIO (Dave Kerman's 5 UUs), UK, Yes, James LeBrie, King Crimson, to the electronica (B.O.C.). Various other types of rock: Roy Harper, The Damned, Simon McBride, Bruce Hornsby, Brian Auger/Julie Driscoll, France Chang and Moogy Klingman. And mustn't forget the folk of Fellow Pynins, who are touring the UK this summer. That just about covers the variety, so join me at 9pm BST for just over 2 hours of interesting music.

Some bands with common names coming up. The latest Flock (a free form UK nu jazz group) and the original (?) Flock with Jerry Goodman. One of at least 3 Southern Comforts, this one from 1971, sounding somewhere between Electric Flag and Taj Mahal. Other rock from 40-50 years ago: Elephant's Memory (John Lennon's NYC backing band), the Latin rock of Chango. A brief celebration of the late Vangelis (more scheduled next week). A continued listen to the best prog album of 2022 by Hats Off gentlemen, It's Adequate. Super folk by Katie Spencer. Reruns of old material by Todd Rundgren/Daryl Hall, Blue Floyd, John Scofield, Heart, Kevin Gilbert, Chicago/Al Green, Flora Purim, Graham Nash. Enjoy.

Slightly more jazz related tunes than the norm nowadays, and several of those favorites, including UK-based Scott McGill (up twice), Fuze, Adam Holzman, Conrad Schrenk, Buggie Wesseltoft. From the archives: a return to CTA, Santana clones Chango, Amboy Dukes with an 'interesting' question (answers please to this address), and the Stones in the 60's. Blues rock recordings made early on by both Stevie Ray Vaughan and Govt Mule. Disco of sorts by Paul Gilbert. Of course some prog rock. Robert Fripp, Flea and some of the Mother's wind section, together exploring the Arabic rock of Rai. And more.....

Pleased to say that I have a copy of the forthcoming album by Hats Off Gentlemen, Its Adequate, 'The Confidence Trick': its the best prog I've heard in 2022 (thanks Malcolm for sending me a copy). Therefore a couple tunes tonight from it.
Listening to last week's show as it went out ,found I had featured a little much avant garde, so tonight's collection of tune is more centre field. Yet more of the French band Bess Of Bedlam who are into their version of 'Anglo-Saxon music'. New releases from Tigris ('Ethio-fusion'), The Trackers, Melissa Weikart, electronica by Peter Coccoma, the distinct sound of +1 (Kim Sajn), Ann Wilson tackles old Robin Trower and Robin Trower tackles new Robin Trower, gamelan rock from Balungan, Bantu soul by Batila, then Gyasi (said to be a cross between Bowie and Bolan). And the old: a couple from The Grass Roots, The Jam Factory, Elephant's Memory . Finally artists from between the late 60's and now - spot them here:

Easter break done, we return with another 2 hrs or so of a variety of music, old and new. Multi-talented Gary Husband's band The Trackers, with a limited edition take of a Radiohead tune. A French band, Bess Of Bedlam, who has intrigued me with their take of Anglo pop rock. Another new remaster of a Family album. 40th Anniversary edition of Rush's classic album' Moving Pictures'. Hollis Brown attempts to cover the whole the Stone's 1968 album 'Aftermath': worth listening the origin? Future releases from Joyful Talk, Saajtak, Doris Brendel, Columbian band Mirlitorrinco. Reissues as digital downloads only, from Pollution and Little John. And just over 50 years Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder record together again.

Some years ago I felt compelled to create a list of violinists in popular music, after being told there were only a few. I stopped at list of about 200, and guess since I could add at least another 30: that list is buried somewhere in Prog Archives. So tonight I give you a show dedicated to violinists/fiddle players, 28 violinists in total across 25 tracks: blue grass to chamber rock, blues to jazz. Electric and acoustic violins, the Norwegian folk hardanger violin to the Indian double necked 10 string. Some obvious musicians, perhaps some unexpected and some definitely obscure - all worth checking out.
This is the last ALT2 Show before the Easter break but back again at the end of April. Don't forget there are separate streamable shows archived at the Album Zone, worthy of checking out.
And also for our N. American listeners: the UK has gone to British Standard Time, and we might be 4 hr ahead of EST and 8hr ahead of PST, unless you guys also put your clocks forward last weekend????
