Fall 2022
This came highly recommended by my Mum! The basic idea is intriguing if not that original but it's so brilliantly written and shot that it might be one of the best thrillers of its kind that I've watched recently. Thoroughly enjoyable although be warned that it does have some vertigo enducing scenes.

Looks like I need to do a trilogy of Bong Joon Ho films. I've got the time certainly. However not sure I can watch Mickey 17 yet as it is quite expensive to stream unless I go to the cinema (haven't done that for a long while).

Agreed Snowpiercer is worth a watch, even Chris Evans is good.

Into the Labyrinth (2019) - an Italian thriller starring Dustin Hoffman, Toni Servillo, and Valentina Bellè. It starts off as a story about a girl kidnapped for 15 years living in some sort of underground labyrinth where she had to complete games/puzzles in order to get food, water, etc. Hoffman plays the role of a psychologist that tries to break through her mental barriers to recover memories of her experience and find out who her abductor is. The movie gets stranger and stranger as it continues and eventually turns into a big rabbit hole where you're never really sure who is who and how this all came to be. Some might find this confusing, but I've always been attracted to movies that go off the deep end even if I have troubles understanding them myself. There's a really good explanation of the plot on The Cinemaholic website if you're interested (spoilers though): https://thecinemaholic.com/into-the-labyrinth-ending-explained/

I'm giving this an 8/10.

Snowpiercer the movie is still worth a watch even if you've seen the TV show. Tilda Swinton is amazing in it.

^ have to admit that I still haven't watched Parasite. Maybe I'll do a double bill with Mickey 17 ( I won't bother with Snowpiercer having watched the TV series)

Mickey 17 - Blimey this is a rather weird movie. It wants to be a comedy at the beginning then drifts in to political satire a bit too much at the end. All that mixed in with sci-fi, aliens and action. I did enjoy it though and Robert Pattinson is superb (as is most of the acting here) and I suppose one expects something a bit odd from Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Snowpiercer). 7/10

The Return

Slow but compelling interpretation of the end of Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus survives his self-exile years after the Trojan War and secretly returns to Ithica as his wife is compelled to choose a new husband.   When Odysseus shoots an arrow through twelve axe heads, his reemergence is revealed.   A sinewy but cut Ralph Fiennes brings quiet dignity to his role as the fallen King and Juliette Binoche his long-mourning widow is an elegant Penelope.   Appreciation is given to the Greek worship of the human body in its true state, the natural beauty of the Greek Isles, and a non-mythic telling of the legendary tale.

Note to self - stop watching films with Nicole Kidman in them. You would think there were no better female actors around capable of carrying a film. It can't really be that bad can it? This is an attempt at a slightly surreal horror film that doesn't make its full intentions known until about an hour in. I did somehow stick with it through the 1hr 50 minute run time so the cinematography must have been good at least. Matthew MacFadyan (from Succession) is well used and that's definitely a plus in its favour, but Kidman is just not capable enough to pull this stuff off at all (and those cosmetically enhanced lips are way too distracting). 5/10

Gladiator II

In an effort to recreate the original from 2000, Ridley Scott has directed more of an upgraded imitation of Gladitor than a worthy followup, with plenty of texture and detail amongst the dust and sweat and blood of the Colosseum but little of the romantic spirit of the first film.   A fine cast does its best with David Scarpa & Peter Craig's material as the son of Maximus returns to Rome as a slave-turned-combatant, mentored by powerbroker Macrinus to overthrow the evil twin Emperors.   But despite numerous striking scenes of battle, sets, costumes, and photography, it fails as a superior historic drama.

Volition (2019) - This one was a surprise. Basically it's about a guy named Jimmy that has clairvoyant abilities allowing him to see fragments of his near future. So, he gets himself involved in some deal over stolen diamonds and uses his abilities to hopefully get himself a nice chunk of money from the shady characters involved. The deal goes bad and then the whole movie goes off the rails involving multiple time travel events in order to save a woman he has recently fallen for. This is not the same nor as good as Predestination, but has very similar vibes. A head-scratcher for sure and probably a paradox or two. Worthy of 8.5/10, mostly for keeping the plot in line with the twisted timelines.

Hi,

Not watching night for me ... instead I got to spend time with some new CD's ... I had to get them ... and you know the reason ...

Dr. Zhivago ... a nice soundtrack, but it is a lot of small stuff that helped the movie, but on its own on a CD, it seems somewhat empty ... I could not even remember the scenes for almost all of the pieces, and generally that is one thing I have no issue with. Maurice Jarre's music. (That's the other Jarre's dad, btw!!!)

Once Upon a Time In The West ... had to get that, because it was Ennio Morricone, and I remember how much of the music really made the film stand out ... I'm not sure the film would be as good without it being given some time with the music!

Kin ... in the last several years, this is probably one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, and I have enjoyed blasting my ears with it. Some great visuals and the film, did not exactly use the music as well, but it did show some of it. I think the film would be better if the director had a better sense for music ... which is saying that MOGWAI is the entity that created the music that gave the film even more character. (I have not, so far, been able to write a review of THE REVENANT, which also has a soundtrack by MOGWAI. Not sure why exactly, but the film did not quite "grab me.)

Gonna watch THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS which is a fine film, but the music in it is even better, though not as well represented as it is in the CD. A couple of other things ... I'm hoping to be able to recheck a couple of Chinese Soundtracks ... there is at least one, that I have to find a soundtrack for ... hopefully. Zhang Yimou, did some nice stuff, but he was not exactly sensitive to the music. But there are a couple of folks that were around him that did some nifty things. I'll be damned if I can remember the names of the films ... and hope to get to that asap.

Kinda wanted to do the FIVE EASY PIECES and EASY RIDER for the music, which was well represented in the films, but both of those films are such a bummer, and I wish they didn't end so badly. As much as I appreciated a lot of the music in the films, I thought that the music was taken advantage of, and not used because it meant something to the story ... most of it didn't. I might revisit those films, which, BTW, I never saw them until last year ... I have this phobia about something that everyone else goes for etc etc etc ... and stayed away from it all ... I was really upset when the guys were shot in the end ... it ruined the good vibe in the film ... but that's what happened to the 60's in America ... as the media killed most of it!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Nocebo 2022
I am fond of my 90 minute horror films but this one fails totally to build any tension or a sense of dread. Stars ex Bond girl Eva Green and, judging by this at least, her career is not going anywhere fast at the moment. The 'Nocebo' appears to be a reference to a Filipino 'witch'. Mostly filmed in Ireland for budgetary reasons I guess. 5/10

The Electric State - loosely based on the excellent graphic book The Electric State by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. I quite enjoyed this film, but something never felt right from the beginning. After chatting to my wife afterwards we both agreed that it was Millie Bobby Brown that's the issue. She simply can't act. Chris Pratt has lots of charisma and played his part pretty much like that in Guardians of the Galaxy and is great to watch. The effects and all the robots are brilliant and one forgets that most of this is CGI and when that happens (like in Paddington the movie), everything becomes natural and the norm. The story ticked along at a pleasant pace but sagged half way through before a quite brilliant, action-packed finale. The TV series Tales from the Loop (also based on the book by Simon Stålenhag) is far, far better than this Hollywood effort, but worth a watch to kill a couple of hours - just try to ignore  Millie Bobby Brown 6.5/10

The Circle (2017) - How much social media is too much? Should we let it control every aspect of our lives? What if everything we did was public? What if anyone in the world could track you down when you want to be left alone? These are some of the questions this film attempts to answer, kind of in a haphazard way. We are ultimately left with no real conclusion but apparently there are pros and cons for all of these questions according to this film. Starring Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, Patton Oswalt, and a nice surprise seeing Karen Gillan (of Doctor Who fame). It's a nice cast and there are some really great acting moments throughout. The storyline I think is trying to bite off more than it can chew. At moments the film seems rushed, and at others it drags. To be honest, I'm not sure what it needs to give it a higher rating than the 6/10 I'm giving it. Still, it wasn't a waste of my time either.

Just watched 2001: Space odyssey... it was weird. the movie captures many themes like evil AI that goes against the spacemen.
lots of quirky space elements and a very impressive movie for 1968 it holds up to movies visually even in today's standards.

Checked out The Dirt again.  True, it's a generic biopic about excess debauchery.  BUT, there's some surprisingly effective bits of humor in this one, like a Jackass movie.  And of course, these four lesser-known actors (counting MGK as acting' not his typical forte) are freakishly good at just being "the guys," not "the band," "the GUYS."  I mean, they're good solo, but get them into a room together, and the sparks are hotter than their pyromaniacal stage effects.  And of course, Webber is actually singing in this movie, and it's practically impossible for me to tell him apart from the actual Vince.

74/100

Teleios (2017) - A crew of genetically-enhanced humans travels to Titan to find out what happened to a mining mission which was retrieving minerals needed to help heal the Earth's climate problems. The story was difficult to follow as most of the crew seems to fall apart to unclear forces, like the crew of the mining vessel. A lot of different themes twist in and out of the storyline - genetically-enhanced vs. unenhanced, rights of robots, etc. The writing seemed subpar and the CGI effects look like they could've been pulled out of a 1990s SyFy Channel-made film. 5/10 is being generous.

Infinitum: Subject Unknown (2021) - A rather quirky, weird film where a woman is trapped in a parallel universe and seems to be experiencing time loops or some sort of quantum thingamajig going on where she is forced to find a way to alter her reality. The star of the film is Tori Butler-Hart who gives a commendable performance. Also features Ian McKellen and Conleth Hill, who both play very minor rolls as professors giving the "science" behind the experiment. This entire film was apparently shot on an iPhone during the UK's lockdown during the pandemic. Given the circumstances, I'm impressed with the results. I feel like some of the parts could have been fleshed out a bit better, but still worthy of an 8/10.

Fellini's Casanova (1976) - Amazing psychedelic movie, on par with his Satyricon, one of the craziest movie I have ever seen. Donald Sutherland (RIP) is amazing, and the film is probably Fellini's darkest work. Very creepy at times.
