When I did a Google search for "Charly García influence on progressive rock" earlier today, the first result was an AI generated one which read thus:

AI Overview:

Charly García, a prominent figure in Spanish rock, significantly influenced the development of progressive rock, particularly in Argentina and Latin America. His work, especially with bands like Sui Generis and La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros, pushed boundaries in terms of composition and instrumentation, establishing progressive rock as a significant genre in the region.

Here's a more detailed look at his influence:

Sui Generis:
This early band, led by García, incorporated classical music elements into their folk rock sound, laying the groundwork for a more symphonic and progressive sound in their later releases.

La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros:
After Sui Generis, García formed La Máquina, a band explicitly focused on progressive rock, further establishing the genre in Latin America.

Serú Girán:
This supergroup, also led by García, blended progressive rock with jazz and other influences, becoming one of the most important bands in Argentine rock and further popularizing the genre.

Innovation and Experimentation:
García's work was known for its innovative approach and experimentation, often incorporating electronic instruments and new wave sounds, even as he continued to explore his progressive rock roots.

Legacy and Influence:
García's contributions to progressive rock in Latin America are undeniable. He not only pioneered the genre but also influenced countless other musicians and bands in the region, solidifying his status as a key figure in Spanish rock history.

Note: Generative AI in Google Search is experimental.

If you can add a bit more detail to that AI overview as a fellow countryman who is familiar with Charly's influence on the progressive rock genre in Argentina (other than via the three aforementioned bands that he led), then we might have a chance of getting somewhere with this, since Greg has already said that the two straight 'no' votes in Crossover prog don't necessarily mean the death knell regarding his chances in PR.

This was what I said in the Crossover team thread after my two colleagues both voted 'no':

I too thought that much of his discography was too 'poppy' to be taken seriously for PR, but the two albums he did in the mid-nineties - La Hija de la Lágrima' from 1994 and 'Say No More' from 1996 - musically speaking at least (since his vocals don't really add anything to the proceedings from a prog perspective) did seem to me as though they had enough going on in them to make him worth a place in PR when considered alongside his contributions to the genuine prog bands that he was a part of.

We now need to firm up on the other aspects of creating a convincing case for him, as mentioned by Jed (Rexorcist) back on page 1 of this thread.

We can add the band Crucis, they were supported in the beginning by García, and I think his influence is audible. Also there has been cross-polination as solo artists between García, Fito Páez, David Lebón, Pedro Aznar, Raúl Porchetto, León Gieco, Nito Mestre, Carlos Cutaia and Spinetta, with whom he has composed together, for example this:

A younger vocalist, Hilda Lizarazu, made this cover with Lito Vitale (ex-MIA) on piano:
