John Wetton, from a 1996 interview, on "God Only Knows":

"That song has got everything! There's harmony, melody, feeling, arrangement, it is simply divine! It was like everything before had only happened in black-and-white and suddenly it all turned to color. I also think it was one of the first songs with the word "God" in the title without being a religious song; a very courageous thing to do at that time! "God Only Knows" was and is the ultimate song for me. If you listen to how the bass is played in that song, it's pure magic. "God Only Knows" to me meant that there was a future in rock music, things could be done differently."

As I've always said, the Beach Boys were the first band to do rock as art.

Love the album ‘Surfs up’. RIP   He had a rough go of it with his Mental Health problems. Beautiful music still poured out of him. As a kid in the 60s Beach Boys ruled the airwaves in California. I read somewhere that their Dad got those beautiful harmonies out of them from family barbershop quartet singing. Their Dad made an album of his own called “The many moods of Murray Wilson’.   I heard it was not so great. They played all around California and I never bothered to go see a show. Regrets.

Pet Sounds and Smile (both the original "Smiley Smile" release and the early 2000's masterpiece) are true perennials, not to mention "Wild Honey". Coincidentally I was listening to a few recent releases in the weeks before his death: "Reimagines Gershwin" and "At My Piano". Both great, especially the second one (which I guess he was ambivalent about), as it is just a pure composer's rendition of Wilson's best works, unadorned but complete in all their beautiful and ingenious detail.
