This idea crossed my earlier this week.

Would proggers feel obligated to listen to evreything by a particular

band regardless if it is considered "bad" by many people.  In essence,

the materaila is musically redundant, when compared to prior releases,

 or too pop oriented.

For instance,

Would it be better for me to purchase L'Isola di Niente by PFM (I already have Per un Amico and Storia Di Un Minuto).  Thus, I would have PFM's big three albums.

or should I purchase Vapor Trails by Rush to complete my Rush Discography?

Clealry, L'Isola di Niente is more highly regarded than Vapor Trails.  However, I enjoy Rush more than PFM.

Altogether:

Do proggers rather have a large amount of material from one

particular artist or a several respected albums from an artist/band?

Thoughts?

Suggestions?

Well I am currently building up my Rush collection- I lack Presto, A Show of Hands, Test For Echo, and Vapor Trails. Can't wait to get them.

I have a mix of both but plan to fill out my collections to have everything from every band I enjoy. I would suggest getting respected albums from bands first. Then if you liked a band enough to make a collection of albums from that band.

Depends... I have every single Rush album. I like Van Der Graaf Generator and Yes but i am not going to buy all of their albums. Then again i enjoy ELP and King Crimson and i am propably gonna buy all of their albums.

In motorsport there is a saying " a driver is only as good as his last race", the same thing could apply to music. If a band really gets to me then I wil try to get all of their albums but if the music starts to go down hill then I would be at least hesitant to get any more albums until I have heard samples of said album or got reliable recomendations, or both.

Good question.

I listen to albums, not bands, as strange as that may sound. I don't feel the need to own the full discography of a band; for example, I do not own any Yes albums from the 80's despite the fact that CTTE is one of my favourite albums of all time. The same thing with Pink Floyd and many others. Obviously, there are some exceptions to this rule, but not many.

There's so much brilliant music in the world that I will always choose a new band/discovery over some badly rated effort that I would buy only to complete my collection - even if it's from a band I hugely respect.

I also tend to be an album man, i.e.; I like National Health's first three but 'Playtime' is disappointing, so, as much as I like the band, that CD isn't worth the money. I've outgrown my 'completist' outlook and very much treasure a few great records by an artist rather than some obsessive hunt for every bit of material.

Honestly I listen to all which appears in some way interesting for me (means different from the "mainstream" which includes Yes, Genesis, ELP for me) and I usually don't give a penny on what other people say since I rather like what most people hate. That's just my view of the topic but everybody's to decide on his own!!Wink Actually Rush or PFM - I don't think they can be compared to each other, but I don't care too much for neither of them, too much known - I prefer the rare, unknown stuff, it's much more adventurious!!
To be prog or not to be, that's not the question!

Generally, I buy albums by a band until I am disapointed by one and there is little chance that other albums won't do the same.  For example, with Rush, I got all the albums through signals.  When I disliked Signals I stopped buying albums, because I knew that most fans who disliked Signals disliked later albums.

If I like a band, I'll go and get a few albums, from there I'm normally happy. If the band just completely blows my mind (which doesn't happen to often), say PT, Godspeed, or Opeth, I'll go out and get the entire back catalogue.

One of the biggest factors for me are reviews. I know everyone tries to formulate their own opinions about an album or a band, but the reviews start me off with an idea of what I might like, then I can make up my mind about them.

Can't no one be well
But I dreamt we were all
beautiful and strong

Whatever the finances will allow.HaHa.I primarily have what are considered the best albums from most prog bands, although if i really like the band i will invest more in their albums even if they aren't rated that high  .In your example i would purchase "Vapour Trails" because RUSH is my favourite band(saw them on the vapour trail tour). And besides as much as i like PFM,i like the RUSH record in question a lot more than the PFM record in question.A matter of taste i guess whether good or bad.

I tend to be a "completionist". If I get a record I like by a band I nearly always get them all (good and bad). Some of them I rarely, if ever, listen to but I somehow feel (my OCD side) that I MUST have them all. Si if I were in your shoes I'd get the rest of the Rush AND the PFM. As a matter of fact, I've already done that, and I'm not the biggest fan of either band.

You may be on to something... My dad only owned* a few of the Pink Floyd albums, but he has all of Marillion's albums, and nearly every official release from the band, as well as a number of boots.

* I filled out the catalog, mostly.

I think Jimbo has a great point about listening to albums rather than bands. For example i think it's a vague question to ask me if i like KING CRIMSON because of lineup changes and number of releases, but on the other hand i go to a concert to see a band not an album.I agree with Jimbo though,it's more about the record than the band.

When I start to like more than a few album by a nband, usually I end up having all of their releases, even if that sometimes means having to swallow some ugly appetizers.

I think is not as much discipline as it is impluse (with me): suddenly i feel the impulse to complete the collection for a band I'm currently listening to a lot, and a few weeks later, I find myself with a lot of cd's, some of them not worthy of the urge I felt to buy them. But sometimes it pays off (The Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree)...

I will complete the discography if it's worth it (and if the band's worth it, like VdGG, Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros and GYBE). If there are some stinkers, I won't get them. I'd rather discover a new band with a great album then fill out a favorite artist's discography with a mediocre album.

If I know an album sucks, I won't waste money on it. For example, I love Yes and Tull but I don't want to buy Big Generator and Under Wraps, there are much better albums I gen get instead, epecially with a limited budget. I prefer to explore different artists than buy everything one released.

If I don't like an album, I just move the folder into my recycle bin.

I like far too many bands to invest in any single discography. I buy a band's three strongest albums, at most. I take relatively few risks when buying CD's, and have almost always heard the album in advance through MP3s. I also feel more obligated to support newer bands with current releases instead of older ones who have broken up, since they probably need my money more.
