Topic: Best Albums of 2007 (at midpoint) Posted: July 13 2007 at 12:07 |
I thought this could work as a good reminder thread for any new 2007 releases. I know I'm a few days past the midpoint.
So, list those releases you think are the best this year so far.

Well, I've only heard 4 listed here, but I haven't listened to one enough times (Gazpacho's Night). But thus far, Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet wins easily. After that, it's DT's Systematic Chaos (which I really liked at first, but my enthusiasm for it has waned, although I still like it) and Blackfield's II. And for non-prog, I'd go with Chevelle's Vena Sera, a very pleasant surprise!

VdGG's live double album "Real Time" is something really special.
also, if you like your - hem hem - "prog related" to be prog-related-related, "Candylion" by Gruff Rhys (who fronts the Super Furry Animals) is a really fun and cute album. =)

Chevelle is a guilty pleasure of mine. But they really need to write more tunes that are not in 3/4.

I'm also waiting for Riverside's REM and Anathema's Everything, two albums for which I have high expectations.

The Observatory - A Far Cry From Here (top-notch progressive music w its own strong identity!!!)
Whitehouse - Racket (tribal noise!!!)
Porcupine Tree - FOABP (i personally prefer Deadwing, but this one is still a rocker for 07)
Shining - Grindstone (killer avant-metal-prog!!!)

My favorites so far are : Fear of Blank Planet, Snakes and Arrows, Paradise Lost (Symphony X), Systematic Chaos
Non-prog : United Abominations (Megadeth)
Just read that Anathema is releasing a new album this year... I also have great expectations for it.
Curious to hear Amaran's Plight (with Nick D'Virgilio and Gary Werkhamp from Shadow Gallery).
Will also be looking forward to C-187's debut album : C-187 is the new brainchild from former Pestilence guitarist and vocalist Patrick Mameli, including Sean Reinert (ex-Cynic, ex-Death) on drums, Tony Choy (ex-Atheist and ex-Pestilence) on bass and some other guy on vocals.

I have a hunch they won't be writing any adult contemporary stuff.

Hello friends
2007 is turning out to be a deep year for prog imo, South America, Skandanavia, and Italy in particular are gold mines for quality music these days
As for my favorites: that is a tough question because I have heard such a small percentage of all the great music; but if I had to pick one I would go with Anekdoten - A Time of Day. The band has reinvented their since the early days, breaking away from the Crimson-sound-alikes, injecting their own mellow (almost alternative rock at times) style and always serving up enough mellotron to keep the symph-lovers happy.
Special mention goes to Nexus - Perpetuum Karma (okay, that one might be 2006 but it's close), Anton Roolaart's wonderful debut. There are also several that I really enjoyed that haven't arrived yet, so I can't go into much detail as I've only listened once or twice: William Gray - Living Fossils (everyone keeps selling out when I go to order ), Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic, and La Torre dell Alchimista - Neo
btw, I thought the PT's and DT's and Rush, etc where all okay but they get enough praise now don't they

Porcupine Tree is the winner for me, but I recently took Snakes & Arrows for a few spins on a business trip down to Baltimore, and it really grew on me. I was lukewarm about it at first but I am enjoying the hell out of it now.
