Topic: Prog because it's prog? Posted: December 28 2007 at 14:15 |
Is there something that attracts prog lovers to all types of prog? For instance, prog varies so much, from space rock to fusion to metal. So do we ever give music that we know is considered prog the benefit of the doubt? For instance, when I first became interested in prog, I spotted a Queenscryche album in a record store and even bought it because I knew it was prog. I didn't even really know what prog was, I just knew I liked it? So, if you see a band name or album that you know you've seen on the Archives but can't quite place, will you give it more attention than another unknown band?

I definately do. I've never really listened to Avant or Rio that much. I knew Sleepytime Gorilla Museum fell under the genre. I bought it, and wow!

sure..... for me prog is the merging of the artistic with the musical. One invariably that I will find interesting... even if it leaves me scratching my head or even if it does nothing for me. That is one of the big problems I have though with modern prog... where one result of that artistic exploration.. complexity.. is latched onto... making it prog in people's eyes... yet forgetting about exploration and the use of colours. Thus becomming as rote and serialized as the basic rock music that prog was supposed to break with.
anyhow ...that the long pretentious answer for yes... if it a group I've seen on PA's... It will demand much more attention than something MTV or the press are hyping.

Without question I do. I use this site as an outlet for musical research so if I see an artist in passing, I'm much more likely to remember it and pursue it there than if it was at some other website or media source.

I think it depends on why you like the genre.

Yep. I've bought albums like Green Carnation - The Quiet Offspring, Fantômas - Suspended Animation, Ulver - Perdition City and A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step(not prog, but many people here seem to like this band), simply because I've heard of them through this site. Haven't really listened to these albums that much, so I haven't really gotten into them - but hopefully, that will change some day!(gosh, I've had these albums for perhaps six months... I'd better start the listening soon!)

Well progression keeps me interested, and is a nice alternative to the same old. Doesn't matter what kind the same principles apply. I also found it fun sampling the different genres when I found this site. Upon joining I'd only really listen to Symphonic, Metal, and a bit of Canterbury and Art Rock(RIP). Now I've done some heavy listening into most of them, and now I prefer Fusion, Prog Folk, and Avant-Prog to the others.

I'm actually pretty skeptical when it comes to prog for some reason. The things I know I will like are few and far between, and usually not prog.

I am guilty of this, but not with absolutely everything on this site.. I'll pass over a prog-related/neo/progressive metal album without taking much notice. (not that they're bad, I'd just have less of a chance of liking it)

Ya I've had this happen before, although most of the time I go into stores knowing what I want. Back when I listened to a lot more prog metal, I saw Wish You Were Here in a record store and bought it knowing it was a big prog hit, and now it's one of my favorite albums for sure.

Yes and No.
I have CDs that I like from every subgenre listed in the PA so would say I have fairly catholic taste in Prog. Many of the CDs of unknown bands I purchased this year where as a result of seeing something about them on the PA that piqued my interest. Unfortunately two of those were the latest by Phideaux and Sylvan, which after many listens I still disliked intensely - so as a general rule, I would say it is good rule but a flawed one because no amount of recommendation can guarantee you will like what you buy.

I give almost all the music (except Rap or Hip Hop) the benefit of the doubt, but I know what I like and what i don't, not just because a band is Prog has to be great for my taste.
I know in advance that i will like at the most 5% of Prog Metal (if too much), don't give me RIO because I simply don't care about it, may be great, but it's too complex forme.
The same happens with the bands, I don't like VDGG, most of King Crimson neither Gentle Giant and Idon't care they are considered icoins of Prog, simply don't like most of them, if King Crimson releases a new album 8i won't buy it until I have listened it first, but I'm sure that if I find a Fleetwood Mac or Meat Loaf DVD, most probably will get them.
For instance, when I first became interested in prog, I spotted a Queenscryche album in a record store and even bought it because I knew it was prog. I didn't even really know what prog was, I just knew I liked it?
I wouldn't accept it for free ....Sorry guys, but I don't like them and I don't believe they belong here either.
So, if you see a band name or album that you know you've seen on the Archives but can't quite place, will you give it more attention than another unknown band?
By the contrary, I'm more interested in new bands and artists to add to Prog Archives since about a year ago.

I like prog because most prog is good music. Most good music is prog, jazz or classical, so I listen to them, but out of the three prog is my favorite because it often merges jazz and classical with other genres. It's explorative, inventive, and basically "progressive".

I generally don't just buy music based on the genre, I try to get samples online first to see if I like what's going on. I do use the archives to research new bands and give recommendations here more heed than those of popular media, but just like any genre there will be music I like and music I don't.

After the "Thick as a Brick" ordeal, I'm probably never going to blind buy again. Plus that taught me to pay attention to the words in reviews rather than the scores.
