Topic: Three Appreciation Thread Posted: July 02 2008 at 16:22 |
Before I start, forgive me if this is in the wrong area or if there is a topic about them already. I searched and turned up no results, but I guess you never know. I'm still kinda new, so my apologies in advance.
So I started this to discuss the band Three [or 3, depending on how you look at it]. They were the first band on Dream Theater and Opeth's Progressive Nation tour that just passed, and they were phonomenal. Talking to someone we know on the line to get in to the 2nd NYC show, he told me and my friends that Three was amazing the night before and blew everyone away. I had to see what all this hype was about.
Upon their beginning, I knew what everyone was talking about. They have a very dissonant sound, and Guitarist / Singer Joey Eppard is absolutely unbelieable. His finger picking techinques on his acoustic were mind blowing. They also have a 2nd percussionist aside from their drummer, and it adds a very chilling effect in songs like The World Is Born of Flame.
Yesterday that same guy I mentioned earlier gave me two of their CDs, The End Is Begun [their most recent] and Wake Pig. So far I've only listened to The End Is Begun but it is mindblowing. The opening riff to the title track is great and its transition to the second track, The World Is Born of Flame is great.
So I'm sure some of you have heard them / heard of them due to the Progressive Nation tour, discuss.

Agreed, and just when I thought it was always that a band was better in the studio. I'd like to hear more of them. Also check out Joey Eppard's solo material through his myspace page, its interesting.

I missed seeing them live much to my dismay. I thought 'The End Is Begun" was one of the best albums from last year. Searching desperately to find Wake Pig. Damn fine band though, looking forward to seeing what they do in the future.

A band I can't believe I haven't heard yet I know they were on tour with Prog Nation, so they probably kick ass. Change the name of the thread to "Three Appreciation Thread" so we don't get another thread like this popping up. I'll definitely check them out soon, but I already know a band that could hold their own against Opeth, BtBaM and DT in a live show must be a pretty sweet band.

Most deffinitely, their live show was brilliant. Some say it's better then their studio album which is deffintely a valid arguement.
And I'll change the name in a minute, provided I figure out how xD.

Same here, though there was something odd about it that I didn't like.

Thanks, will do.
For anyone interested, this is a video of Joey Eppard during a 3 show playing what he calls "Bramfatura" which is mostly him going off on his acoustic. You can see his great picking techniques here.
And heres a video they released for the song "All That Remains" off of The End Is Begun. Great song.

What a relief, I thought you were talking about Emerson, Berry & Palmer also called "3 "
Even worst than GTR.

^Awesome, you may want to check out another video up there, its them playing The End Is Begun / The World is Born of Flames in hi-quality. Make sure not to find one of the crappy videos of them off a cell-phone xD.
The more fans the better, they really deserve it. Props to Mike Portnoy for getting their name out, on a bunch of youtube videos all you see is "I heard of this band on the Prog. Nation Tour, they blew me away!" and things of the sort.

I saw them last year when they toured with Porcupine Tree here in the U.S. They were a fun band to watch live. Don't have any of their albums though.

^ Must've been an awesome show, I'd love to see Porcupine Tree and 3 together. I suggest you check out the youtube videos I posted a few minutes ago if you have a minute.

Did they change their name to "Three" now? My copy of The End Is Begun has them down as "3," but I noticed some pictures with the word and their name was the word on the prog nation flyer.
Their live show is amazing. However, they don't sound half as good on record. I don't like their recorded sound much at all. It isn't thick and it also makes their songs seem less complex.

As for the name, I think its interchangeable between 3 and Three, but I dont think it matters much.

Haha, yea. For grammar's sake I find it difficult to not write Three out completely.
