OK, I know, it's a bit off the wall, but we can all use a bit of variety once in a while. Who knows, maybe the powers that be will pull this post. We shall see. Anyway, I'm just a wee bit curious. If you like Prog Rock then I'm pretty sure you enjoy classical music and I am a big fan of one of the greatest composers that ever lived in Franz Joseph Haydn. I love Yes, but.............................................Lets here your tale.

Haydn is a little too bubbly for me. Granted I've not heard much, as I don't really have time or energy to devote to classical appreciation, but that's my impression. Still better than Yes tho LOL

Well, I'm not sure if any prog band could stand up to any classical composer as it comes to musical knowledge, amount of talent and innovation. Geek

But as it comes to taste: I like Yes a lot better LOL

I do remember having fun listening to some of the Haydn symphonies. Haydn seems to be always sunny, major key, like Yes, so maybe Yes are in a way the true descendants of Haydn LOL

I'm sorry, but that argument is really ridiculous.

Classical is much more intricate and involved by its nature. Has nothing to do with talent or innovation.

Dig up one of these 'classic' composers and tell them to right a much shorter, much smaller-scale song that has the same emotional impact as their grandest symphony, and I'll bet you anything they wouldn't be able to do it.

I love Yes and I love the classical era and to me that era is defined by Joseph Haydn. Listen to Beethoven who he schooled by the way and listen to Mozart and you hear Haydn. Listen to what he has done and consider this. Glenn Gould thought very highly of this gifted composer and even went as far as saying he thought of him as a better composer then even Mozart or Beethoven. His later works when he was freed of the restrictions imposed by his employer are first rate compositions. Listen to the London Symphonies and judge for yourself. I don't know, I think the man really deserves more credit than he gets. To me he is arguably the best composer from the 'classical' era.

You know, I think of the brief period that was progressive rock and I stand in admiration of the body of work that came out of that period and I can't help but think people like Haydn had a big part in that very productive but brief period in music through his influence.

I don't really like Haydn or his contemporaries too much. Composers from any of the later periods in history would have stood a better chance.

Meh, Yes wins about every poll they're in. They're starting to get on my nerves. I think I'm going to start seriously disliking Yes simply on the fact that they have too many fans here--darn pop prog.

But don't forget that what we call Classical was quite Popular in his heyday, by a aristocratic society.

Perhaps but who knows, can't ask HaydnLOLLOLLOL

I can stand Haydn, such a bore. Same with most classical composers though. Any 20th century composer about would dominate Yes though.

Haydn isn't one of my favorite composers, but even if he was, it would still be Yes by faaaaaar. Especially seeing them yesterday still rockin' 40 years into their career.

I voted for Yes, but if the selected composer had been Beethoven, Mahler, Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams or Richard Strauss - I would have been more inlined towards the composer.
