I'm glad you liked that, the debut avant/jazz/rock is not an accessible one. I would recommend you the next album, 1001 Centigrades. It takes the sound from the debut towards a next level, halfway between the sound from the debut and from their classic "Zeuhl" sound from the mid 70s. Thumbs Up

Their debut is just stunning, and to my ears 1001 Centigrade is not comparable, but many other people believe it is just as good or even better, so it's really a judgment call.  I see 1001 as a "bridge" album between the jazz/fusion sound of Kobaia and the classic zeuhl sound of Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh (which you should also get)

If you like MDK, get Wurdah Itah and KA; if not, you might prefer Kohntarkohz and Attahk

I've heard Emehntehtt-Re is really, really good, and I can believe that having heard KA (their most recent before E-R, but I haven't gotten that album yet.

Udu Wudu is hit-and-miss;  it's got some really good, intense creepy sort of pieces, most notably the powerful epic De Futura, but other tracks on the album... leave to be desired.  They simply aren't up to the same standard Magma has upheld on their other releases.

You probably don't want Merci; nobody does Wink

One thing worth nothing is that their sound morphed a lot after the debut; which is why you should listen to 1001 and then MDK and see if you like that direction

The Retrospectiw albums are quite incredible, the best live Magma I've ever heard (better than Hhai).

Ummm

"The genre is a mixture of musical genres like Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Modernism and Fusion. Common elements: oppressive or discipline-conveying feel, marching themes, throbbing bass, an ethereal piano or Rhodes piano, and brass instruments."

But that doesn't do it any justice

Sounds very interesting, and I've heard they're very good so I will eventually give them a listen.

Get them in order ... I can not say that I have a single bad Magma album ... and it was one concert that I was proud to be there and help usher a standing ovation. I was one of the first to stand up! SF 1999!!! And I was busy with a camera through out the show!

The debut is cool. It's a bit raw and the album is a bit long but it was a cool start. But the next album is definately better imo. I recommend these following 4-5 star albums Wink :

1001 degrees centigrades(better musically and vocally than debut)
Wurdah Itah(The best of the almost tribal Magma albums)
Udu Wudu(a great mixture of styles)
Attahk(a bit of a fusion and funk mix with great drumming)
Kohntarkosz(more about repetition but cool music)

I really don't understand the hype of MDK. I enjoy about 15 minutes but the rest is just a bit boring imo. I have the 3 versions of it and I recommend the version which goes for under 35 minutes which I think is a bonus track on the remastered album. The drums are more clear and it has less vocals so you can hear the organ and piano. I treat this more like an EP. From the bonus track I might just take a cut from it starting from about the 3 minute mark and ending around the 17 minute mark LOL

I haven't got any post 70 Magma yet though but my fave albums in order so far are:

1001 degrees centigrade
Wurdah Itah
Udu Wudu
Attakh
Kobaia
Kohntarkosz

I recommend  all 6 and I'd recommend MDK last, but get it with the bonus track Tongue

Getting them in order is not a bad idea, but Imight suggest after 1001 Degrees that you get Retrospektiw I-2 (I prefer that version of "MDK" to the studio album, plus it has Theusz Hamtaahk).  I started with MDK, and loved it.  Kobaia is my particular favourite.  I even like Merci considerably, but that should be far down your list.  Attahk and Udu Wudu, as well as Merci,  I don't like as much as other Magma albums.  Of course there are many great live albums -- Live/ Hhai would be a good one to get.
