Oh well, I couldn't help myself. It is really dumb music and it always sounds the same. Only the Police could be more tolerable, Offspring has a lot of energy and attitude that makes it less bad and U2 sounds like a mixture of pop and punk and sounds very good.
For me U2 is the prog punk. Since its the only intelligent punkish band.

I don't think U2 is that Punk anymore, they do have Punk influences, but that has easily faded.

Prog tries to elevate Rock Music to an artform, through the use of jazz, classical, folk, and literary/mythological influences, coupled with innovative composition (extended beyond the simple pop-song structure) and technical proficiency.
Punk is about a look. It's about hating everything in sight and screaming about it in monotonous verse-chorus-verse songs over the course of 2:30 minutes. ^I know, I really don't sound any better than punks bashing prog, but compared with Classical, Prog, and Jazz I really have no patience for punk. |
EXACTLY. Progressive rock is just that, progressive rock. Rock whose porpose is to progress an otherwise simplistic (for the most part) genre into true art. Punk is antiprogressive. Its purpose is to prove that musicianship is not neccesary to produce good music, that thought is not neccesary to produce good music, that screaming and shouting is the only way to produce good music, and that subtlety is the devil. The two are perfect opposites.

Still... I don`t know what this is all about. Comparing prog and punk?
Wow. Great idea. Punks are dirty morons. trust me I know many of them.
my country is full of punks {"the real ones"}. their style and their
music is pure garbage so why bother???
|
That was certainly not the most intelligent thing to say but by far the most truthful thing.
Let me put it that way:
I know it and you know it: maybe punk has some acceptable melodies (i'm
not even shure) but musically it can't be compared to ProgRock. After
all, it isn't about the music (i shure hope so) - most of the punks (at
least, most of the punks i know) are just idiots who don't enjoy
working and hate the fact that everyone thinks that they are lazy. who
can blame them ??
sorry for this immature post but that's just my opinion and let me say
that i know that not every punk is that way but until now those are the
only kinds i've met. (ok not the only, but 95% at least)

Oh, and King of Loss, please get rid of that photo of Steve Howe. Much as I love his guitar playing, I just ate lunch.

I agree and therefore I've done so.
BTW, Jon, I'm not dissing punks, (Some of my best friends like punk music, I'm the only fourteen year old Canadian Prog fan I know.), I'm dissing the music and the philosophy, both of which I strongly dissagree with.

One last thing,
I have to express a concern regarding Pinky's post on the Punk fourm. It went something like this:
"While proggers were changing time signatures, punks were changing the world."
You're not changing the world if you are changing it to a world that respects brainwashed conformity and unfailing sameness [a world that doesn't respect change(progress)].

Did we change the world ? Its open to question . Maybe , but not the way we had expected. I think the Pistols made it up as they went along , or just played McLarens game , with the exception of Lydon , they were his puppets . I supose it opened music up to people who otherwise would never have had the chance , and it ( probably accidentally ) indirectly created a number of movements after it , such as goth , grunge - some in reaction to punk and some as offshoots or extensions ( 2-tone ) . However I don't see that as part of any masterplan - there wasn't one. Basically , at the end of the day it was just a bunch of kids enjoying themselves and try to express themselves as best they could .You can't say punk meant this or that - because it meant many different things to many different people.
End of todays lesson. Sure you're all getting bored anyway with this now.

I don't belive they have changed the world that much.
And in my opinion music is for listening, not changing the world.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people complain punks are too stupid to understand prog, and that all punk is worthless. Sorry to break it to anyone in that situation, but that's you not understanding punk!
Sure, lots of it's simple, but if you can't comprehend why anyone would want to listen to it, and if you're saying punks are too stupid to understand complex music you're too stupid to understand simple music . In general I find simpler music more difficult to appreciate because there's less going on (perhaps it requires more imagination and abstract thought since there's less to "grab on to"? ), but I'm not snobby enough to claim it's not worthy of me (I'll save my snobbery for musicals, soap operas, McDonald's and pop music, thankyou )
