I think there's no 'most influential' band, no matter the genre (except The Beatles in rock music...)

Along with the Spanish, as you must surely know if you're based in Argentina. Viva las senoritas y senoras Latinas! And the English, Nordic, Caribbean. Must go before accused of some sort of sexism.

I'm afraid that when people start having a go personally, instead of over the topic matter, I lose interest very quickly.
I notice that my last post is marked as "Pending" - and I can understand that, as it points out a lot of uncomfortable truths, and probably doesn't come across very well in this site's favour - as I am a Collaborator (nobody asked me if I wanted to be one, BTW!), and hence a representative.
So I guess that only myself and the Admins can see it, which in one way is good, as it's not helpful to this discussion, but in another way seems to be slightly over-zealous censorship, as I do not swear or break any of the guidelines, except that I responded to several personal attacks with a personal attack (the best form of defence is to attack without mercy - Jack Nicholson said that, I think).
Two wrongs don't make a right, but it had to be said by someone - and frankly, I get pretty fed up with people who respond to a line of discussion with personal stuff, just because they feel backed into a corner - not least because I find it hard not to retalliate in a childish way - and the interesting discussion becomes a boring argument for everybody.
At the end of the day, who cares if one band is more influential than another? the answer won't find the Higgs particle or cure cancer.
But 11 pages shows it's a fun topic for proggers to blat about until the cow comes home - and my idea of fun is to discuss the minutae of music, especially where things can actually be proven, as there are very few areas in music you can do that.
My idea of fun is not being told I'm an unhelpful, lazy git because I didn't assist in some task which I didn't know needed help with because no-one told me about it or asked me, or that I'm probably lying about my qualifications because I don't know how many definitions of Symphonic Prog there are on the internet and use obvious methods instead of complicated, imaginary ones to make fundamental decisions about particular aspects of music, or being told that I'm deliberately going off-topic by someone who is already several topics away.
Just to answer the question of why I'm not participating in this thread at the moment - no hard feelings, of course...

Hey CCVP, nobody here or at least very few, dislike Pink Floyd.
If you check my reviews, I gave 5 stars to WYWH and DSOTM, unlike a member (who's no longer here) rated Pink Floyd albums with 5 stars and the rest of the big bands albums with one star.
The point is other, some of us believe Genesis, others ELP and even some Jethro Tull are more influential, that's all.

I'm not going to wade through 11 pages of posts to see if this point has already been made, but Pink Floyd is probably the prog band that had the most influence OUTSIDE of prog.

I think you got it in one... and as I have commented many times they have probably been the most influential of British artists, with the possible exceptions of the Beatles, and Bowie.

I don't expect any positive feedback from this (my posts rarely get any) but, look at it like this. You're a qualified musician, theorist, whatever. I'm a numpty who can barely bar a chord but can write lyrics (and has done, sometimes successfully, for most of his adult life).
What threads do I find? Those that disparage the lyrics in prog. I even agreed with most of the posters!!!
Just be glad that you have the gift to dissect musical structure. I cannot do so and therefore rely on my ears (such as they are these days) alone.
I appreciate how difficult it must be to have differences of opinion with those who know less than you obviously do, but at least these forums respect those with musical knowledge - I get the opinion that the lyricist is regarded as the lowest of the low. But I don't mind, 'cos I don't care.
I can still say that Messrs Davies, Strummer and (Nick) Jones are the finest poets of what is roughly my generation. But most posters are so musically focused that they couldn't care less about any of them.
So thank whoever you wish to for your musical gift/knowledge. Actually, I'm vaguely jealous

Need to lighten up after a previous post: x years ago I 'dated' an Italian lady called Loridana, and she was categorically the hot side of frigid.
I know it's not prog but Rod Stewart had a track called Italian Girls. It boasted the line She was tall thin and tarty and she drove a Maserati.
Loridana was not, was not, was not and did not. In that order. I think it was a Ford Escort, btw

Certif1ed have a good knowledge of music theory, so he can argue with arguments that sustain his conclusions, that's why most members of the forum finds quite difficult to argue with him.
In my case i like to always read carefully what he writes, and sometimes do not agree with his opinions but he always use good measure of logic, sense and analysis.
That's my two cents.

It's the most famous, but I still believe every progressive rock band are indirectly influenced by King Crimsonm, because all big progressive bands are influenced by the english band.

Hi,
I'm afraid the best answer I can come up with is MAYBE. I can absolutely agree that they are AMONGST the most influential prog-bands.
I prefer to look on certain albums that were influential (at least to me) rather than on a whole career. Personally, I love DarkSideOfTheMoon but I can not really enjoy Animals. Same phenomena I have with other potential canditates (most of them mentioned in previous postings). To me DarkSide is a milestone just like Sgt.Pepper or PetSounds and this list goes on and on ... ;o)
As a guitar player I admire David Gilmour, yet it would be unfair to consider Steve Hackett or Robert Fripp to be inferior, they're just different. I guess that's the key, key influences are different to anyone and it's difficult to put this into mathematical categories in order to find a formula of "who's the one".
Pink Floyd is a great and influential band imho, I'm fine with anyone saying they are THE most influential ... just as I feel fine with anyone who names another ...
Have a nice day & LLR&R - Way

Would prove that they are prog, you mean? That is not up for debate, not on this thread anyway. I don't see how a particular musical moment from one track can prove they are the most influential prog rock band; pretty sure you misunderstood the topic.
