VdGG - House With No Door. Definitely not recommended listening for anyone who is in a suicidal mood. |
I agree with this choice, but also find it one of the most beautiful songs ever. Hammill has a few...the real slammer is "Betrayed" on Over. Or Lennon's "Working Class Hero".
|
"Betrayed" is certainly a close contender.
|
While we're on the subject of Hammill - Broken Frame from The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome is another great one - the closing line 'I only have a negative of you' sends shivers down my spine every time. |
You mean "Last Frame".

Aha! You spotted my deliberate mistake - well done, go to the top of the class!

VdGG - House With No Door
VdGG - Lost
Both off the same album too, amazing!
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Queen - The Show Must Go On
Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World
Queen - The whole of the Innuendo album. But I find their last album is unlistenable, 'cause it's too depressing.
That R.E.M. song that shall remain nameless (Everybody Hurts), because
it depresses me too much. Surely the most depressing song ever!

Pain of Salvation - most of TPE is very sad and emotional...
Evergrey - State of Paralysis, I'm Sorry

Pink Floyd's Sorrow:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers, But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
[...]
And silence that speaks so much louder that words, Of promises broken
(Not prog but certainly depressing. Most of the spanish group Los Secretos)

To be honest quite a few of these songs i'd find depressing at all. High and dry is a depressing song! And almost anything by Damian Rice! But SORROW by Pink Floyd, that song just rocks, if that brought tears to your eyes you were dropped on your head as a child.
