What? Not even Surfer Rosa(/Come on Pilgrim)? My vote here. I've only known about Non-Credo for a year, but Reluctant Hostsis atleast top three from that period.

It's a pretty decent album tho'. The biggest turn-off is that they are so self-consciously post-modern and 'knowing'. Farkin' hate that

Once you listen to "Paul's Boutique," it'll factor into that list. One of the last great albums ever produced, in my opinion.

That means absolutely nothing coming from you. Your opinion on music post-1989 is absolutely worthless.
|
Don't let my views keep you away from PB, though. If you liked the De la Soul album, PB will be a similarly engaging listen. Now, if it makes you feel any better, I like plenty of albums by pre-1989 artists. "Brave" was a fine effort, and "Laughing Stock" is a one of the finest examples of mood-altering music I own. But that's just my personal reaction to the music's impact.
|
I've heard enough good things about Paul's Boutique to check it out anyway. And, of course, there's nothing wrong with your opinion pre 1989, where I presume you give the albums you talk about many fair listens. My only problem is only with your not even caring about the quality of music post-1989 when deciding whether or not it's good (well, that and your "music is always subjective" deal).

Last reply was about the Beasties' 'Pauls Boutique' (to avoid any confusion).
To be fair I haven't listened to those albums for 20 years. And I'm not in any hurry to re-evaluate. Pretty decent live. I tend to lump it all in with pub-rock

I've never even thought about that. But hey, it was 1988 I had just gotten rid of my mullet, my voice suddenly sounded man-like, and my preferances had just changed from Metallica and Slayer to Pixies. I had yet to hear the term post-modern. Edit: Noticed your post after this, Yu.

The Mullet:Hairsttyle of the Gods.
Nothing turns me off more than self-congratulating smugness. A big reason why I can't enjoy Stereolab, The Beasties, and Sonic Youth et al how I would like to

Run DMC! What a great album! I tried to see them at the Birmingham (UK) Odeon when they toured with the Beasties (June '86 ?) Was begging outside for a ticket but nobody was selling cheap. Napalm Death were playing some sh*thole the same night so went to see them instead. Always regretted it

I need that book! To be honest I think I still had the hairstyle of the gods in 1989. Maybe I even kept it the whole decade. New trends didn't hit the norwegian countryside very fast.

You be illin' By the way, I just wanted to let you know that your review of Vortex' Les Cycles De Thanatos is one of my favorites on the site, mostly for the line comparing it to finding a pubic hair in your big mac.

And why I still love them. Scoundrel Days is my real 86-90 favorite. (I'm not joking)

I'd like to hear more from this band, but obtaining A-ha albums not called "Hunting High and Low" is a notoriously difficult task over here.

How about ordering it? Can't be that hard to find. Debut is more known, but their follow up still sold six and a half million copies.

Yukorin rarely fails to be correct. =)
but from this list I clicked on the Sun City Girls since they're one of the few bands in existence who can get me to care about lyrics
