There are literally hundreds, but the ones that come to mind first for me:
Prog: Marillion's "Warm Wet Circles" or the "Falling From The Moon" section of "The Great Escape"
"Near The End" by David Gilmour -- that acoustic to electric solo at the end just kills me
Non-prog: Butch Walker's "Joan"
"Torch Song" by Todd Rundgren
"The Last Goodbye" by Poco
I really could just go on and on...

Epitaph is sad and great song, and The Wall have a lot of saddest songs and some few in Scenes From A Memory.
O yeah, and South Side of the Sky by Yes.
Also the guitar solo of Steve Hackett in Firth Of Fifth sounds saddest for me. |
Bienvenido a los archivos cuate, y no te preocupes tanto por el ingles, varios no lo hablamos muy bien....disfruta del prog

'Timetable', 'Seven Stones', 'Ripples' and 'For Absent Friends' by Genesis all have an undertow of sadness to these ears; their melodies have a deep rooted flavour of regret imo...
Also, 'Awaken' by Yes and 'The Last Goodbye' by Camel always move me a great deal as they seem to be a last throw of the dice for classic prog in a sense; neither band ever managed to reach the peaks those songs reached ever again imo.
Outside of prog, 'He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother' by The Hollies, 'She's Leaving Home' by The Beatles, 'Cold Morning Light' by Todd Rundgren and the harrowing 'Dark Globe' and 'If It's In You' by Syd Barrett also have very moving power.

Forgot 'The Wall' by Kansas; one of the most beautifully sad songs in prog that also has one of the finest vocal performances I've ever heard.
'Les Morts Dansant' by Magnum is really tear-jerking; the live versions particularly have real power and Bob Catley's vocal is a true stunner.

Camel - Spirit of The Water
Genesis - Hairless Heart, In The Cage
ELP - C'est la vie
Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There?
Non Prog:
Peter Gabriel - My Head Sounds Like That
Radiohead - Motion Picture Soundtrack
Cat Stevens - Seasons in The Sun (the contrast between the music that its rather "happy" with the lyrics just kills me)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Almost all of their music
But I Just can't find right now the saddest song for me...

prog: PoS - Undertow, VdGG - House With No Door + some of the Anathema's songs.

House with no door by vdGG is really sad. As for non -prog, about
anything by Damnien Rice really depresses me although it's great music.

The Wall? I thought that was a rather uplifting introspective overcoming of a bad situation or an unexpected turn in your life. I get inspiration not depression from that. However since we are the subject of Kansas two of the the most depressing songs I have ever heard
Dust in the Wind and Lonely Wind along with Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire have to be three of the saddest, most depressing songs I have ever heard

Seasons in the Sun is indeed a VERY sad song, but it wasn't done by Cat Stevens. It was Terry Jacks who did that depressing one.

Most that I can think of have already been said. I'll add "Home" and
"The Tide is Turning" by Roger Waters off of Radio K.A.O.S. A lot of
instrumental music is just as depressing (e.g. some GY!BE and some of
Eno's ambient work).

Uriah Heep's ' Come away Melinda' Byron's voice is awesome on it.

Non-prog:
Allman Brothers Band - Old Before My Time
Gov't Mule - Soulshine (again, not really that depressing, but it hits home)
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man (not depressing, just a beautiful song)
Duster Bennett - Jumpin' At
Shadows (also done by Fleetwood Mac) - A lot of Duster Bennett stuff is
depressing actually, but uplifting at the same time, wonderful!
Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World (this depresses me, 'cause I want to be a Man of the World)

I have it by both but I didn't know which done it. Actually, I remember
reading that the original one was written by a french musician or
something like that. Anyway, beautiful song.

Anything from The Holy Bible by The Manic Street Preachers.
Probably would say either She is Suffering or This is Yesterday.
