Probably my most disappointing purchase would be Gowan - Great Dirty World.

I bought it sight unseen from Columbia House years ago because the description compared it to KC and Yes. When I got it, I found out the description was based on Jon Anderson doing backups on one track, and Tony Levin playing session bass. It was not prog, just crappy, wimpy pop. Gowans vocals made Jon's singing sound positively testosterone laden. Wimpy indeed.

Speaking of Christopher Cross, HE would chuckle and call Gowan wimpy.

-Rick Wakeman: King Arthur... -- A few shining moments, but the vocals completely ruin it.
-Patrick Moraz: Story of I -- I listened to this album so many times, but it simply comes across as cheesy.  There was really only 1 excellent song on the whole album.
-Yes: Big Generator -- Its only saving grace is Holy Lamb.
-Jethro Tull: Under Wraps -- Its only saving grace is Under Wraps #2.
-Jethro Tull: Dot Com -- eh... unfortunately just did not impress me
-King Crimson: The Power to Believe -- Although I do admit I've only listened a handful of times....
-Kansas: Leftoverture -- One of the newest additions to my prog collection.  Magnum Opus is a great piece of prog, but the rest of the album is pretty much ruined by the vocals.  For me, it is the cheesy 80's power pop vocals mixed with (pretty darn good) prog music.  Unfortunately, vocals usually make or break albums.

Fortunately though, I don't think there is a single CD I own that is awful all the way through.  But as your prog collection gets larger and larger, you just don't get a chance to listen to these lesser albums.

Prog - FTM by TMV.  Just can't get into it.   Bought it at lunch one day, put it in my car on the way home, and heard - something.  Ok, this is prog, it's just the intro, it'll get better...and I waited for the real music, a real song, to start.  And waited, and waited.

And then, I realized something - THIS WAS THE MUSIC...

Repeated listens have yielded similar results.  But hey it's better than my worst non-prog purchase, which is:

I Should Coco, by Supergrass.  I Should Puke.  Why oh why did I buy this?

i would have to agree.. although i do not HATE octavarium... it was a major dissapointment. i also was extremely let down with "BE" by pain of salvation... tho it has grown on me somewhat.... i was just expecting so much more than i got. not bad by any stretch, but again, dissapointing.

It has to Be Triumvirat - Spartacus

After the first four note, i tought i had made a mistake and put Trilogy...I listen to it tought in its entire and what a piece of crap i found it was.

Then probably go Barcley James Harvest - Baby James Harvest

Really, a mediocre band, and a booooring cd ! "Thank you" is probably the worst song ever create in music !!

Octavarium
The musicianship is very good, but I just find it dead and emotionless. I listened to it once and never touched it again (Please don't kill me all of you DT fans out there )

It sort of took time to appreciate it myself, it also helped that it was the first album by DT I've bought so it holds a special place in me. D:

A bad purchase I made a while back was "Wiretap Scars" by Sparta. While it's an okay album, I was pretty disappointed when I found out it wasn't very much like the related The Mars Volta, who I liked at the time.

It was my first (and only) DT album as well. I guess something in the music is just missing for me
I'll give it another go though, then maybe I'll come to appreciate it as well

Worst is not the proper word, but here are those I really disliked, without hope to change my mind, and sold to the second-hand shop.

  • Mars Volta : De-loused in the comatorium
  • Last Turion : Circle logic
  • King Crimson : The construKction of light
  • Rush : Power windows
  • Chandelier : Timecode

Nevertheless I love other albums by King Crimson, Rush & Chandelier

I bought a Steve Vai album - Passion and Warfare - completely soulless, fancy licks at the expense of the music, self-indulgent, musical masturbation. Ab-so-lu-te-ly bloody awful.

^^^^...and I have to agree with VdGG about Octavarium....my first experience of DT, very disappointing....

Took me 15 to 20 listens before i got into, really got into Frances, the first half a dozen times i thought....rip off, so hang on in there

Now I see that I am not alone with this. IMO Discipline is the worst album ever made by KC. OK it's among three weakest works by them (the other two are Perfect pair and Beat), but this is the one which I do not like one single track from. And I never heard anyone else to share my negative feelings about it.

"Out of Water" by Peter Hammill, seems to have only one redeeming song "A Way Out" the rest I just can't get on with, and yes I love Hammill as you can tell from the nick, but really it is the most...disappointed i've been with a CD - of course there are a million worse albums out there y'know.
