I can see where lots of people come from about not liking Jame LaBrie. I'm a Dream Theater fan, but sometimes his voice bugs me a lot, especially on that Budokan DVD...Some notes he "hits" just grate my nerves. Otherwise, it might just be the general downward trend their music has been taking over the last couple years. I still like DT, but just the overall composition and structure of their old stuff v. their new stuff seems to be heading further and further away from what I like. Train of Thought was the final straw for me. If his new "Octavium" is like ToT or worse than it....... <--(DT)

When did this topic turn into a name-calling contest? I think that when a topic like this gets to a point where certain people are just bad-mouthing each other is just plain stupid. I thought most prog fans were a little more intelligent than your average music lover, but the comments that have been said in this forum are part of the reason that I hate this forum at times. If you can't think of a logical way to state your opinions or to back them up without resorting to petty name-calling, then you should be banned. Period
Now that that's out of the way....
I really like DT for the following reasons:
Instrumental skill: Like it or not, The members of Dream Theater are some of the most talented musicians out now. If you could play guitar like Petrucci or drum like Portnoy, would you want to show it off? I think that most of us would say yes.
They can also make a great introductory band. If you find a friend who happens to like them, tell them about some other prog artists, and see if they like.
That's my 12 cents.

Funny, I love Dream Theater for their song writting skills alone. Playing fast at some points adds some variety, aggression, drama, etc. The solos hardly take that much time out of a song, so no one can really complain about that (the longest really is on Beyond This Life). Listen to Stream of Consciousness and you'll know what the deal with this band is.
Oh yeah, and people forget about ACCESSIBILITY. Most of their albums I didn't care for right away, for various reasons. Give them a like 2 dozen spins and they'll grow on you, I guarantee that much. Then you can really judge.

Can anyone explain me why???? Give me some reasons to hate such a wonderful band.

Because they are not as much fun as Iron Maiden and not as interesting as Tool.
DT is essentially a metal band with an excellent prog drummer and a keyboard player who wants to be Rick Wakeman. The relentless shredding of TOT bores me silly. They need to get a sense of humour and put some 'wit' into their music. I DO like Liquid Tension Experiment though.

I think it's more the latter part

A lack of innovation has no place in progressive music. To my ears they've done innovative things, though.

It's a justifiable "complaint" on a prog forum, though?

I don't think that's a big gripe people have - but there are places where it's not just playing like Metallica; it is playing Metallica (in Metropolis Part I and somewhere on ToT - I don't know the exact bits offhand).
What it all comes down to is that Dream Theater are good at some things, and not others - like any band. It's just the things that they tend to be good at (not just playing fast, but that's certainly one of them) don't particularly appeal to the fanbase of progressive rock. If I were to listen to them with "pure prog" ears, perhaps I wouldn't like them. If I were to have only come across them today, perhaps I wouldn't like them. But as it is, they brought me from metal into prog and I listen to far too many styles beyond prog to be worried by a bit of metal.
|
I can understand all your arguements, especially number 4, but I've never agreed with any band being hated for doing something different from what they started with. Dream Theater started as prog... we all know they're heavily influenced by Heavy metal, so let them do a heavy metal album. That's my opinion anyway. |
JESUS CHRIST!!!!Quote over quote over quote!!GUYS....i think every band big or small has its own strengths and weaknesses that they capitalise upon....DT plays "oh so fast",petrucci`s work is tedious at times but has a lot of charecter...myung and portnoy are probably near the top at their instruments...rudess is good and labrie sucks.........notice the last one.Does it ring a bell? Now try 2 answer the eternal Dt question....why do they have such long drawn out instrumentals...labrie is the reason.AND as sum1 here has said...its about personal choice...that dude cudnt care less bout ELP,i dont like genesis, lifeson aint that good, lee is one of the best,i love Zappa.DT are only doing what they are best at....if that works with the fans...i think they should be left to do their stuff.YES....criticism where its due.I think DT will be a better band the day they stop taking inspiration from Maiden&Metallica and stop chasing new fans by becoming more and more mainstream. If they focus more on prog than cannibalising st.anger sales...every album can become I&W or scenes from a memory.

Similar sound and style are one thing. Directly lifting riffs because you're incapable of writing anything half decent yourself is another.
|
Please tell me the exact riffs they ripped off.
Besides, Iced Earth's "When the Eagle Cries" is an exact rip-off of Black Sabbath's "Sleepy Village". But I wouldn't say Iced Earth can't write a song.
|
Ever heared firth of fifth? There is one song on SFM:M2, cant recall l which one, that has ripped off a little part from that classical genesis, atleast i think...someone who knows what im talking about?

The reason people hate DT is that they are an abomination to mankind!
1. They cant play very well.Playing fast is a way of covering up lack of ability. 2.James La Brie cannot sing. 3.As far as I can see they have never written any songs. 4. As above but...........................................any tunes. 5.They couldnt sell out a telephone box in most countries. 6. Only spotty nerdy-boys and geeky middle-aged computer analysts like them. 7.They make ELP sound talented by comparison. 8. I dont like them,so they must be crap.

I should think they play well, as, apart from LaBrie, they have all attended prestigious musical academies...
I adore their music, but I am neither middle-aged, nor computer analyst nor spotty nerdy-boy. Might I suggest you stop posting this kind of abusing messages?

And besides, they are progressive: their every album is a deviation of their paradigm, without ignoring the characteristics of their style...

Oh right... and I suppose Metallica's "Call Of Ktulu", "Orion" and "To Live Is To Die" are all long instrumentals because James Hetfield is a crap singer?

No.If you get annoyed because someone slams your band you should not be on a forum.Forum etiquette works both ways,I will always defend myself even if it means crossing the line occasionally. BTW: this little f**ker You listen to any Roger Waters? What's his phrase ? Oh yes,"with the luxury of being out of range"

Music is like literature: writers borrow phrases from their examples, or they write pastiches (James Joyce) - why should musicians not borrow riffs from their favourite bands???

What controversy? Your reasons for hating DT were just plain silly! A feeble attempt at humour which was insulting to Dt fans! To many music is a personal and precious thing.

The first bit is what I was saying, but even restricting the field to metal Mying isn't really near the top of his field - give most bands with Steve diGiorgio in a listen (not really Iced Earth, but all the fusion metal he's done is insane). Then there's the Spiral Architect and Watchtower bass parts. I'm talking mainly here about the bass players that widdle about, because that's what Myung's more famous for.
