Unfortunately Croatia and Czech Republic didn't qualify. So I've had to make do with Slovenia, Slovakia and Serbia.
I seem to like teams beginning with S. I would have gone for Sweden if they'd qualified too.

Would you have preferred Slovenia to qualify instead of USA?

I would have, yes. But with England first, obviously.

I can't say I'll miss this Italian team. I love Italian football, but I think this is their worst national team that I ever seen playing. In 1996, 2004 and 2008 they had great players but out of shape, in 1998 they were OK but not great, in 2002 they were also good but were knocked down by referees. This however is really bad.

Has a defending champion ever been knocked out in the first round during the next Cup? Have they ever not qualified for the next Cup?

^ Yes, France were bad in 2002 and were last in their group. That was probably the worst case, because they had all their great players in the team, while this Italian team has almost no one of the 2006 World Champion team.
For the second question, just before recent times the champion team was qualified to the next World Cup by default, so it never happened.

Thanks for info. I imagine that the 2002 France team were an even bigger disappointment to France than this year's team, which is probably more of an embarrassment with all of the off-field drama.

Back in 2002 there was no scandal despite the very poor performance, what happened with France this time is by far one of the most embarrassing episodes in World Cup history

Looks like Italy may or may not have just scored a goal as the save was made right on the line.

It wasn't a save, as it was the defender that cleared it off the line. By the looks of things, it wasn't a goal.

Wow
The delayed telecast of Slovakia v Italy is about to start
But its the 76:30 mark of Paraguay v NZ and still no goals
whats this mean for NZ?
Edit: I just checked the other channel and the Slovakia v Italy match is on!
at the 78:30 mark score is Slovakia 2 to nil!

Indeed. Slovakia would be out too, if New Zealand won.

Ah yes I see that too. Italy has a goal but can they get another?
