Dream Theater is probably one of the best metal band, if not the best, in the world. On the other hand, it's far from being one of the best Prog band. The problem is that most of the fans are/were metal fans, and they got into the most advenced form of metal possible. And they begin to says they are listening to Prog, and like someone said in a very good analyse, most progheads hate DT representing progressive rock those days, and of course, it doesn't represent this genre of music well. They then tell everywhere DT is the best, nothing beats it, even if they couldn't tell 2 or 3 other progressive band.
I do not hate Dream Theater. I thanks this band, because I discovered Progrock because of it. You know, I was listening metal, just like anyone, then I felt into DT, and later I started to listen to 'progier' stuff like Porcupine Tree, an so on. I also think A Change of Season is an amazing song, and the second disc of Sixth degrees of Inner Turbelence is great too.
If I could write what I really think in french, it'd be a lot easier, but well...

Definitely one of the best metal band out there, the most "Progressive" and the most "entertaining" and the most "musically-sense" out there, but I disagree, I've listened to hundreds and hundreds of Prog bands and I've not found one that is better than Dream Theater. Maybe its just my weird taste in music, but Dream Theater is the best.

Well in school I hated Maths, just because I could not understand anything. There is a similarity here. There are people who cannot understand Dream Theater, so they hate them. I doubt if any of these "DT haters" has listened carefully their works. from WDADU to LTEs, Dream Theater are fairly called the greatest band in progressive metal. Their ive appearences are far better than the studio works. 7 years ago I went to one of their shows just to see a guitar solo and a drums solo (At that time i was thinking that DT are a "Watch what we can play" band!!), just to see 4 pro musicians at their best. Anyway, I can't understand why there's such a topic? Dream Theater are unique. If there is another band like them or better please let me know.

They're definitely not unique, even if they were the first to do it.

So you're also saying that bands like Led Zeppelin aren't unique, even if they were the first to do it (?) nonsense.

I don't think theres another band like Dream Theater. Everyone will come up with "Dream Theater just use an old formular" and stuff like that... but come on... is there another band who plays and sounds just like Dream Theater?

Dream Theater is definitely unique and original. Tell me if some of the songs off Images and Words are not original or a Change of Seasons?

Without wishing to be pedantic, this is a prog rock forum, so I think RT is in the right place... This thread was only moved to "Progressive Metal" recently.
I don't think that DT are even the best metal band - they don't seem to understand what metal is about - the only thing that's "metal" about DT is the riffs and the guitar solos. Motorhead are a better metal band, as are Iron Maiden and Metallica - because they understand and helped define the genre. Heck, I could name 1,000 "better" metal bands - at least, metal bands that are more representative of metal as a genre.
Do DT have arse-length hair? Do they wear ripped denim and leather 24/7? Do they sing about Demons, Wizards, Rainbows, Motorbikes, Devil-Worship or Lust? Where are the fist-pumping choruses - the head-banging straight-4 riffs, and the crank-it-to-11 sound?
DT are a kind of hybrid of prog rock and metal - progressive metal was first applied to Rush, and later to Diamond Head. DT sound like neither band, and hence are not technically Prog Metal.
Their music does not seem to fall into the prog rock category (to which they aspire) or metal (from which they take the majority of their sound) - or even the old FM Rock ballad formula, which is where most of their song structuring seems to be based.
Kick 'em out, I say

Yes, the new system confused me,anyway the thread title says it all

I couldnt, dont think I even know that ,many.

So if you dont sound like the above, your not prog metal? I dont agree.

Well, Cradle Of Filth don't sound anything like Black Sabbath... so I guess they're not a metal band.
