maybe it was better to have 2 different section in that:
-rock drummers
-jazz drummers
i like so much drummers but it's difficult to choose between rock and jazz drummers even i made it some days ago and i chose Jon Hiseman but in 2/3 days even it's not regular in this forum , i will tell all my 10 or 20 favorites ( rock or jazz) .

Bruford and Peart can tough this out. I think Bruford has had more influence persoanlly.
I love Portnoy but his influence is only over the last decade whereas Bruford is from Crimson in the 60s to present day.

It might be Bill Bruford to give the revolution for playing the drum. Original performance method. The part of Polyrhythm and Open rim shot is the tastes for him. The influence from Joe Morello might be completely absorbed and be reflected in Rock.
And, my personal favorite drum player is Chad Wackerman and Furio Chirico.

I think Carl Palmer is more innfluenced by Buddy Rich then Niel Peart ever was or is.
just watch hees solos with ELP or Asia live shows, he almoust imitates and copies Richs solo tricks,

i think the same thing than AGINOR about the fact that Palmer plays so much things like Buddy Rich.
it can be very logical because as the rumour tells about Palmer that when he was young, he had the Rich's daughter as girlfriend and he had some drum lessons by mr. Rich !

Mitch Mitchell deserves a vote. His jazzy drumming influenced a lot of drummers including Bill Bruford. His drumming on 'Fire' is fantastic and his drum solos during 'Voodoo Chile' {the long version} and 'Machine Gun' at the Isle of Wight 1970 are two of my all time favourite drum solos.

for sure, i forgot M.Mitchell, i now realize that his way of playing, his jazzy style + his interesting fills are very inportant in my drumming style, about my apprenticeship, same thing about Simon Phillips, he gaves me another way, more jazz-rock to play in my different hard-rock projects 20 years ago, just listen to the JUDAS PRIEST ''sin after sin'' album, Phillips was just a session player on this one but the job is phenomenal, and also he was just 19 years old at that time, also his playing in Michael Schenker group 1st album is very hot, Cozy Powell (i respect this guy for sure) , made the tour with Schenker after the 1st album was made and the
the drum parts played by him are so simple and ''ordinaire'' like we tell in french compared to Phillips, the part he plays in the middle of ''into the arena'' is so boring .
these two (Mitchell and Phillips) are not my favorite drummers but for sure they influenced me a lot.

Neil Peart for me, technically speaking the best by far. Interesting to see Bill Bruford running it so close though

Bruford by far my favorite. Consistently innovative and fresh while maintaining his classic sound and style.

I'm a budding drummer myself, so nice poll!
My vote goes to Mike Portnoy (who else, given my signature pic?)! I'm also a big fan of Carl Palmer, Lars Ulrich, Phil Collins and (no doubt I'll get sl*gged off for this one) Mikkey Dee of Motorhead.
Although Portnoy is my overall favourite, Mikkey Dee's is the best live drum solo in my view - awesome.

My vote will be a controversial one probably. Gonna go for Collins, Hes certainly not technically the best but he is very creative on those early Genesis albums |
You've probably gathered by now that you're not the only Phil Collins fan! I find some of his drumming truly inspirational (especially the duets with Chester).

Phil Collins for sure. I had heard some GREAT drummers prior to 1976 when I bought Trick of the Tail(and discovered Genesis). But this guy.......I could not believe then and on the other albums by Genesis I collected after that, the cleverness, versatility and shear Power he had. I remember playing Duke for my brother in '80. He said these were the best drums he ever heard in his life. Unfortunately, this is not applicable to his solo albums. Chester Thompson came close. Cozy Powell and the late Jeff Porcaro were not listed, both very fine drummers. Keith Moon(prog? prob not) might be considered the king since so many STILL can't figure out what he was doing. In a VH1 documentary one drummer compared Moon's complexity to a right handed guitarist suddenly turning his git the other way and playing left handed whenever he/she wanted.
For me, Phil is the undisputed greatest drummer in Rock history.

I'm really surprised by the difference of votes between Neil Peart and Bill Bruford to the rest . Of course both of them are great but I think Carl Palmer, Ian Paice or Andy Ward (not listed) are, at least, at the same level...even at a higher level for me.

It is the same in all polls with the two of them in it. It shows that people don't vote for drumming skills at all; other factors decide.

While emotionally I wanted to go with Moon as he was just so much bloody fun, He declined rather rapidly after 1973. Bruford was another touch cut as he is undeniably and consistently supurb. But in the end, I had to go with Peart.
