This thread is about music but... In Italy Sanremo Festival means politics, sociology, national-popular event... cultural tradition. Mahmood wins Sanremo Festival of Italian Song, year 2019. Mauro Pagani (PFM) was the president of the jury that overturned the vote of the public (in which they were in first place two melodic songs) and has decreed the victory of this song. Many criticisms in Italy: left political choice again Salvini to show that even the son of an Egyptian has the right to win with a rap where he talks about Ramadan? Salvini tweeted he preferred other songs (please shut him up!). What do you think about this songt? Do you like it? Of course, we should compare it with the others but in all they were 24 !!! I would be curious about your judgment on this single song. PS You can listen here:

I knew this was going on but didn't pay that much attention; in competitions like this I don't normally find much to enjoy. The song is OK, I've heard much worse, certainly not a song that in my view would be an embarrassment as a winner of such a festival. It all depends on the competitors though and I think I've heard only one more (which was worse). That said, I'm not going to become a Mahmood fan any time soon and I wouldn't say that this is obviously great or special in purely musical terms; rather, as you note, politically and culturally - and I doubt that I'd have preferred Salvini's choices.

First time I heard this song I thought: Terrible. (And the others?
Ok, we are at Sanremo, but there is always some good melodic song!)
Then, I discovered It won Sanremo. ![]() So came to me the idea it was a political choice.... Now I've listened to it 5 times and I think it's.... so and so... I dont like rap.... Anyway Now I think it's possible that the jury really like it. So mediocre, for me. Edited by jamesbaldwin - February 15 2019 at 10:02 |

Can we expect more normally of a Sanremo winner musically than of a, say, Grand Prix Eurovision winner? Because I like the majority of those less than this one (which admittedly doesn't mean that much), despite occasionally at least understanding why they won. I personally, despite being generally open minded when it comes to music, don't expect much agreement between myself and the juries of such competitions; and even less with the voting public. Maybe knowing that a PFM member heads the jury I should expect otherwise!? But has PFM ever made an entry to this festival?

It is not my style of music, but as a pop song I'd say it is quite good. Unfortunately he is terrible as a singer, and there are several off-key notes in the performance.

In good old days other songs won Sanremo.

I haven't heard any of the other entries, but I guess by today's pop's standards it's about average. I can see why some people might consider parts of it kind of catchy.
The song itself is not quite as bad as the performance, both the singing and rapping sound pretty weak and low effort.

^ I prefer this one too, but it seems it had no chances to win - too wordy, too serious, too rocking for Sanremo.

This is the song winner for the public (but not for the jury of quality)

Interview with Mauro Pagani.
Pagani said the song Soldi is the best. He said it has strong strophes, strong bridge, strong refrain and a modern sound, a modern arrangement.

The Zen Circus is really good. The public winner though has nothing of interest for me, one of these songs that seem calculated for occasions like this one. I can understand why this can win a majority, but me ne frego. I'd put Mahmood over that one day and night. Rapping in Italian is fine by me (love me some Caparezza). |
