I made a Canterbury Scene bands poll, but, thinking that wasn't enough I decided to make a general poll on people's favourite prog bands, limited to the most famous ones.
I know there are probably over 50 different versions of this poll, but why not have another?

I welcome the 51st version of this poll and my vote goes to Pink Floyd, but only by a narrow margin over Yes and Genesis. Smile

Have to go with Yes. Nothing touches TFTO at the moment...it has everything and is the paradigm against which all symphonic prog must be judged against...

oops I read this wrong!  I thought you wanted us to say whom we think was the most famous.  See the bottom for the poll response

most famous as a prog band - either Yes or King Crimson, but truly King Crimson once you weed out the Yes fans who were lured by Roundabout or Owner of a Lonely Heart and who aren't actually prog fans

most famous as a band - either Pink Floyd or Genesis.  Both have many non prog fans

most famous as a band that stayed prog - Pink Floyd

Hmm I still have to work 2 other bands into this...

How about most infamous prog band - ELP

Most famous Canadian prog band - Rush (yeah I couldn't think of anything else that wasn't insulting, so I decided to do the polite (Canadian) thing

favorite of these for me - Genesis, even allowing for the pop era.   Still some good songs there.  But even Genesis wouldn't do better than to reach the lower rungs of my top 20...some days.  second would be King Crimson mostly for their first few albums

Easily Rush as most famous prog band...The last prog band to fill 15-20,000 seat arenas. If Genesis were to ever reunite they would fill same or more, but could not tour like Rush had in the past 20yrs.

Yes, your avatar and username gives me a hint that you may like Christmas records by Genesis, although I don't know of any. Smile

Songs like "The Camera Eye," "The Weapon," "Double Agent," etc. don't sound like AOR to me.

Camera eye is 1980...read the post...Moving Pictures was last listenable release...signals was so bad...sampled later stuff...all too short and too commercial for my taste...

Yes.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Sorry but as much as I like Rush they are not more famous than Pink Floyd. Rush filled up arenas but Pink Floyd filled up stadiums. Plus, PF has sold way more albums than Rush. Rush would probably be number 3 behind Genesis who were over all more popular with more album sales(and also had larger attendences). Popularity doesn't equal quality though. A lot of Genesis fans probably have no idea what prog is and don't have any other prog in their collection("Oh, I thought they were just a weird rock band.").
