The selections in the poll series are collected from the Rate Your Music all-genres/all-time music chart, and I have included ones that are in Prog Archives Prog categories. The numbers beside the albums show the chart position at RYM. Please vote for a favourite and mention that and any others that you find particularly notable in a post. Thanks.

Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool (1544)
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream (1795)
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm (1838)
Klaus Schulze - Mirage (1849)
Chris Squire - Fish Out of Water (1854)
Peter Hammill - The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage (1858)
Sparks - Propaganda (1866)
Cardiacs - Sing to God (1868)
Voivod - Killing Technology (1869)
Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms (1884)
Kingston Wall - II (1919)
Bark Psychosis - ///Codename: Dustsucker (1932)
John Zorn - The Circle Maker (1937)
Herbie Hancock - Flood (1939)
Marillion - Marbles (1943)
The Gathering - Nighttime Birds (1952)
David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive (1954)
Quella Vecchia Locanda - Il tempo della gioia (1957)
Vashti Bunyan - Just Another Diamond Day (1960)
Änglagård - Hybris (1965)
Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (1969)
Atheist - Piece of Time (1970)
Deafheaven - Sunbather (1979)
Tim Buckley - Lorca (1986)
Magma - Köhntarkösz (1994)

--------------------------------------------------

My favourites are:

Klaus Schulze - Mirage
Peter Hammill - The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage
Magma - Köhntarkösz
Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms
Cardiacs - Sing to God
Tim Buckley - Lorca
David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive
Vashti Bunyan - Just Another Diamond Day
Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica

It really is impossible to choose THE favourite, but as A favourite, then it will come down to opting for the Schulze and Hammill. Both are so wonderful to me in their own ways, but then so are quite a few in this list.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

I almost went for the obvious choice of Chris Squire, but then I thought perhaps I'll choose someone less obvious, such as Linda Perhacs - the singing dentist. Smile

I seem to recall Ayreon and The Gathering share the same singer: Anneke van Biergarden, or something similar to that. Smile

I would not use the word "share"  since basically Ayreon  is Arjen with a bunch of guest musicians and vocalists.

Her name is Anneke van Giersbergen. Quite disrespectful how you changed her name. Imagine for a second someone mocking your name. I bet you wouldn't like that.

Marillion > PT > The Gathering
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Playing the Fool without question.

I have to choose between Fish Out of Water and Mirage? That's a tie if I ever saw one.

How does Peter Hammill have the same album feature twice in this list? 🤔

^ And both have different numbers. It's carelessness down to Logan error -- the usual case with errors in my polls, topics and posts. Believe me, it's very easy to make mistakes when you are me despite my Godly to not err is Logan reputation. :P ;) Because I try to not duplicate a name in each poll, and went through over 2000 entries one sleepless night I made many mistakes. I would try to re-shuffle to correct, but other errors came up. I will try to fix it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Nick. :)

EDIT: the chart numbers have now changed, but I think it's because I originally had an archival Jethro Tull release in there, but then decided to avoid archival releases generally, and in trying to re0rganise somewhat erased that and doubled the Peter Hammill -- easy mistake to make (at least for me) when dealing with so many and cross-referencing. Will replace the second.. The first Peter Hammill was placed correctly. Fixed, replaced with a Herbie Hancock. I usually do notice the major mistakes after I post, but this time I do not read back over it.

Set of great albums: {Gentle Giant, Porcupine Tree, Cardiacs, Peter Hammill, Linda Perhacs, Bark Psychosis, David Sylvian, Cpt. Beefheart, Tim Buckley, Magma}. That's too many.

Personal winner: Hard hard to pick between Cardiacs, David Sylvian & Bark Psychosis. Will go with Cardiacs this time.

Despite the presence of my first Magma purchase, my vote goes to the Fish
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution
