bloc party are a BRITISH PUNK BAND, the opposite of prog!

LCD Soundsystem are a dance rock band who do that really annoying "daft punk is playing at my house" song. NOT PROG!

Better poll choices would have been:

Van Der Graaf Generator - Present
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Mostly Autumn - Storms Over Still Water
Styx - Big Bang Theory
James Labrie - Elements of Persuasion
Shadow Gallery - Vol. 5
Fantomas - Suspended Animation
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute (not just the mars volta because they have been around before '05)
The Worthless Recluse

I think you should take a very big moment here and read through the "Modern Prog" forum, expand your horizons.

I saw Bloc Party live at SXSW in Austin...they are not prog at all.
More like Gang of Four, Talking Heads and Joy Division combined. Those
are NOT prog-rock groups.

I do like those bands, but Bloc Party left me cold. The songs were
strong enough, but the band had a poor attitude and no stage prescence-
and the singer's yelping grated on my nerves. They played just before the
New York Dolls...

Just my humble opinion. Different strokes for different folks.

I think the whole prog/non-prog argument is bit of a waste of time
anyway. There's no real definition for it, unless you consider the classic
pantheon of 70s bands and their instrumentation to be the the only true
prog...which some do. I personally don't care.

But I'm pretty sure Bloc Party is a new wave/post-punk band.

As of now my favorites for 2005 (F rigid PROGRESSIVE paradigms) are definitely Frances The Mute, Deadwing, Catch 33, Present, Guero, and Catch Without Arms...so far that's all that come to mind.  Here's hoping for Octavarium to impress...

LCD soundsystem should not be judged by that daft punk song. Not only is it the weakest song on the album but it doesn't represent the album as a whole.

The album goes all over the place, from dance-punk to Eno-esque soundscapes to everything in between. The most distiguishible influences are eno, floyd, can and suicide. Believe it or not, it is prog-ish at moments if not full on prog. The guy comes up with some incredible time shifts and is a master of the studio, just like eno.

Give the album a chance, if you like eno, who is now officially recognized by the archives as prog, then LCD soundsystem is right up your ally and should be considered prog by its own rights. For you purists, there is alot of live instrumentation as well, so don't let the daft punk song scare you off.

I agree with Outdoor Miner, LCD Soundsytem is the Eno of the new millenium.  It is a two disk prog epic that goes everwhere.  I would classify Bloc Party as "Progressive Punk".

Plus I don't even think Bloc Party is progressive.
Life seemed to him merely like a gallery of how to be.

Up 'til now, it's the Mars Volta.

But as everyone else is saying, this is way too soon.

Agreed. Too soon and too few. Deadwing is worthy of polling. I'll try the recommendations of Shadow Gallery and Mostly Autumn

"DavidInsabella" your narrow view of music has really hand cuffed you.  Again another album you have never heard but insist on judging.  Did you not learn your lesson from the progressive punk poll?

Did I mention that these bands are also actually relevant to the point of having an impact on todays music scene.

I didn't vote for any of those, but there are 2 new bands to watch out for this year: The Syn, which is Chris Squire's new band, and White which is Alan White's new band (with Geoff Downes).

Syn have a new album coming out soon called Syndestructable, and White have a self-titled album coming out approx. the same time. And they're touring together with Steve Howe. I think they will be the bands to watch this year.
