I agree, Crimes and Misdemeanors is a great film, one of the best. Woody made great films before that one, but with Crimes he solidified his stature as one of the great film artists, IMHO. |

I agree, Crimes and Misdemeanors is a great film, one of the best. Woody made great films before that one, but with Crimes he solidified his stature as one of the great film artists, IMHO.

I personally decided that I didn't "get" Woody Allen or his sense of humor a long time ago. Granted I was a teen at the time and the humor may have gone over my head.
The one movie in particular that I am thinking of had a scene where I believe he might have been on a job interview or a sales call and the office lobby that he had to wait in was freshly waxed so he kept falling down while he was trying to go sit on a couch. The couch turned out to be a leather couch so once he got to the couch he couldn't stay seated on the couch because he kept sliding off of the couch. Then after what seemed like an hour he tried opening a bag of M & M's which amazingly tore open and sent M & M's flying across the floor. In theory, kind of funny, but while I was watching it, it was one of the most boring and stupid movie scenes that I had ever seen.
I'm pretty certain that was a Woody Allen movie. The name however, I don't recall.

Purple rose is a great film, but the end... I dont like it that much. Sure, its not the "and they lived happily ever after" end, but it kinda bumbed me out a bit

Indeed Match Point is from a totally different world than most of Allen's work, but it's incredibly good at what it does. It doesn't need to be a "Woody Allen" for me to like it. and I like it, because I like all those English themes & motifs. Actually when I saw it I had just finished reading two of Galsworthy's sagas, and it fitted perfectly. I like an artist to be versatile and to be able to adapt successfully to another world of culture and forms.

I was just comenting today with a fellow Allen fan friend how Match Point is my least favorite Allen movie, and he agreed... I find Scoop better and more entertaining... well, maybe its cause of the lack of comedy that I love in all of Allen movies...

I'm trying to have a complete picture of Woody Allen, until now it's like this:
Love and Hate: 7/10 (very good). I haven't laughed that good since I can't remember when.
Annie Hall: 10/10 (masterpiece). Woody Allen at his best.
Interiors: 9/10 (exceptional). And yes it's a tribute to Bergman, but just as good as the "originals".
Manhattan: 8/10 (excellent). It does disappoint somehow though, especially seeing it after Annie Hall

Oh so hard to decide! Shadows and Fog I think is his best made film. Its brilliant, but doesn't appear on the list so I'm sad. Manhattan was great, Anything Else was actually pretty funny and Jason Biggs did a great Woody impersonation.
Stardust Memories was also very good, and Sleeper had good physical comedy. I didn't care for Match Point, but thought Scoop was great.
Zelig was great and Melinda and Melinda was very interesting. Manhattan Murder Mystery was very funny. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex.... was interesting, but didn't really grab me.
Celebrity seemed more dramatic than funny. Kenneth Brannaugh was good in it though. Bananas was weak I think, Annie Hall was really good the first time I saw it, but I didn't care for it as much the other times I've watched it. Hannah and Her Sisters was also a top notch effort.
I found Small Time Crooks to be awful, Hollywood Ending was entertaining as was Deconstructing Harry. I guess since Shadows and Fog isn't on the poll I'll go with Zelig.
