If you'd asked me a month ago, I'd have said that The Yes Album hammered Tales. I've had a complete turnaround since then. Although there are (imo) self-indulgent moments on Tales, its qualities have won me over (I am of the opinion that the opening of TRSOG is one of the best ever). Conversely, while I still like The Yes Album, its weak moments are quite annoying for me.

I can't pick one... they're both great, and so different.

All the criticism towards TFTO is completely justified, in my opinion, but once you stop asking if it's good or not, that's when you can start to enjoy it.

The Yes Album. Was the first full length album by Yes I ever heard and that always seems to count for something if you think about it. I don't hate Tales... though I want that to be known too.

The question says which one I like. I like both. TFTO is superb a masterpiece of prog alongside Relayer and Close to the Edge. Although I frequently listen The Yes Album cause as you said is the most accesible album alongside Fragile. I'll go for Yes Album. But Tales wins in which album is best.

I vote for Tales From Topographic Oceans. It is close, as it would be for any two Yes albums from The Yes Album through Relayer. I love the epic nature of this owrk, the only problem I have with it is it is difficult to find the time to listen to in one sitting. I agree that if it had been made during the CD era, it would be even better, and might be hands down my favorite work by Yes. What I really wish is that it were just a few minutes shorter, then I could burn it to one CD and listen to it without having to change discs.

I think that Yes were holding back on The Yes Album, thus it is not one of my favourite albums by Yes. And I think that Tales is too long with too few ideas, every song could have been much much shorter (well, except for maybe "revealing science"). In short: I like both albums but i prefer neither. CTTE > Both.

You're right, it's not overblown.. I think it's rather underblown. There were some good ideas, but they were too few and far between to take up the amount of disk space that they did. I've listened to and analysed this album many, many times, thinking it just had to click, but I understand it now, and it didn't blow me away. I think it might have been a great album if they had CD technology at the time, weren't obligated to fill up 4 record sides, and made each track 10-15 minutes long.

Yeah, I also think they started going downhill with Tales... thankfully they came back up, greater than ever with Relayer later that year .
Out of the two, I prefer the Yes Album. They take spots 4 and 5, behind Relayer, CttE, and Fragile, for me.

The Yes Album by a million miles. Tales is tootly and pretentious, with about 20 minutes of great music out of the four sides. Would have made a great single album with a little more effort. The Yes Album is well nigh perfect - yes even A Venture has worth.
