The ultimate depressing album has to be Berlin by Lou Reed. His best mind you.

I'm not sure why, but I definitely tend to go in for "depressing" music waaaay more than other types of music.
It just gives me more breathing room, more room to think, and to expand...to introspect and whatnot.
I just enjoy it more.
Not to say I don't like happier music, I just don't "prefer" it I'd say. |
Well I dunno. But I'd have to agree it does give you the space to think which is a good thing unless you think of the wrongs things . But hey it's just life.

With all these recommendations this dude is seriously gonna think about killing himself. Shouldn't he try happier moody songs? At least your gonna notice it's gonna make you feel a little better even though it still hurts.

Eh these suggestions aren't just for "that guy"...I, and many other people who have posted here like depressing music as well, and here's a thread for them to look in!
At any rate, I doubt this guy'll get but a very few (probably the first few) of the suggestions mentioned. the others I think were more for the sake of the thread.
At any rate, I listen to LOADS of depressing music (hardly anything but) and I'm perfectly content...so who knows?
Also, when I AM depressed, happy music just makes it worse. I need something introspective and darker to soothe me--something to relate to, not wish for. But that's my take: Yes is the worst possible band to listen to when depressed in my experience, Ulver and Radiohead are two of the best.
But who knows for sure? Everyone's wires are arranged quite differently.
EDIT: Also, Nice avatar d00d.

Good point, I was just making a suggestion to make this guy feel "better". But just like you said everyone's wires are arranged differently. But even I listen to depressing music all the time (well not all the time, but most of the time) and even my favorite bands come from this background so I guess it's up to how the persons wires are arranged. And thanks.

That's probably the best example of "ambient black metal" i've heard. i agree that it's great.

Another great depressing CD im listening to right now that is incredibly dark is Ulver's Perdition City. love this CD.

yes i was just about to mention this band, as mnay pople forgot about them.
ulver's newest, "Shadows of the Sun", may just be the most depressing album I've ever heard. Definitely one of them. | Shadows of the Sun is the physical embodiment of sad |
I agree. I love it. Although I love others more. Still. I love it.
Highly recommended for those who want depressing music.
Another recommendation would be Pink Floyd's "Echoes"...not the rest of the album so much, but when I used to get depressed a lot "Echoes" was a track I spun very regularly.

I am in a situation where I like this girl a lot, but she doesnt like me. I need some albums that reflect these feelings. They dont have to be progressive at all, just quiet, and depressing like some singer/songwriter thing possibly. Thanks |
Yep, you need some Anathema. I'd also recommend The Butterfly Effect, and their Imago album. They sound a bit like Dredge ... not prog rock, but still good.

Well Shub-Niggurath are both, so I guess it beats Univers Zero easily. Don't forget Present either, of course.

I see L.A. Woman, that's good. "Love Her Madly," "Been Down So Long," "Cars Hiss Past My Window," "Hyacinth House," "Riders on the Storm," all shall suffice. The Wall also fits the pattern, Floyd at their best and most depressing.
But no one's mentioned Minstrel! Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery is all real downbeat (it's about Ian divorcing his wife), and it helped me through some tough times.
