A lot of depressing music ends up being my favourite..... I don't know how serious you want to get with this stuff, but try Khanate and Swans if you don't mind heavy.

I definitely think Radiohead is depressing by the way. Not all their stuff, but their best stuff.
The eye-shaking king!

If you want something REALLY gloomy, try John Cale's MUSIC FOR A NEW SOCIETY. I can't imagine sadder music.

I got tempted by this and got Music For a New Society. Great album

Well, Gregor Samsa's Lessening always gets me down for some reason.  I'm not entirely sure I'd call it prog, but they are in the archives so I guess they fit.

Agreed.  "Torch Song" on the same album also fits the bill....

It depends on if you mean depressing as in sad and moving or depressing as in I feel like stringing myself up cuz it's all hopeless. By the latter description I'd go with Day 12 of Ayreon's THE

Hi,

The saddest of all the songs I have ever heard is "One More Chance" from the Fairport Convention album "Rising for the Moon" ... my understanding is that this is the last thing that Sandy Denny recorded and you can tell that it was enhanced a little bit, and it is a loving tribute by a band, and wife-less husband ... in essence, a few weeks later, Sandy did not get another chance ... if you will. The album came out a bit after I believe.

In the re-mastered version is a piano version of this song and it is nerve shattering ...

Maybe it is that we know that she would not get a second chance, but even then the lyrics take on a much more poignant stand ... that is at once major poetry and scary reality.

The rest my friends ... is all talk by comparison and is for the most part idealistic music and crap that has nothing to do with "sad" ... perfect example is Albinoni's Adagio in G that every one says is sad ... it's just nice music ... has nothing to do with sad.

Hi,

What makes you all think that just because a song has a "sad" or another word in it, that it is sad?

Is all the rock'n'roll audience so well un-read that they would never, ever, have read anything or seen anything that was sad and did not mention the word? (... hint, the punishment is an evening with the Bronte's!) ....

Hardly anyone mentions a song with the word sad in it.

As far as I can see anyway.

I think you missed the point ... almost all the songs listed suggest sad-ness right off the bat ... in general by the title ... and the brain automatically accepts it or thinks of it as sad ... it's almost like saying that no one is smart enough to do that and write the opposite to catch people off guard!

If I name a piece Blahblah in CMinor, there is no way that you will know if it is a happy song or a sad song ... even if I put in some Winchester Cathedral like lyrics in it ... which could have a dog lapping some water with red streaks on it down the street ... and there was an accident half a block away! The accident maybe sad, but the dog is thirsty ... it has nothing to do with sadness ... the dog is thirsty ... and what he is drinking is ... slightly tainted from a wider lens point of view ...

Literature ... is the history of words ... and how people "tell stories" ... if you will ... and somehow we're acting like a couple of rock songs invented the mode! Sometimes is not sad ... and Rimbaud and many others would probably kick you in the butt for feeling sorry for them!

Don't find these three depressing - anything but, in factTongue
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

Anything by Anathema.
Anyone, Anywhere is quite possibly the saddest song ever written. Sheer brilliance! Cry

Agalloch might also be worth a try.

. So depressing its comedy.

Same with Swans: Failure Ha-ha! Priceless.

Most of Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom is deeply affecting, though. But hardly depressing.
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
