My favourite prog bands are King Crimson, Opeth, Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree. Which non-English language band should I try first?

Hybris by Anglagard, hands down. Swedish band, and it's the only album in which they have lyrics. I haven't got it yet, but I really want to get some SBB (from Poland).

Oh, of course, and you should get yourself into some Rock Progresivo Italiano, lot's of wonderful stuff mostly in italian. I myself am usually interested in non english speaking bands singing in their original language (for me that's a plus), so I'll be interested in seeing what comes up with this thread.

From your tastes you might enjoy some of the heavier French modern stuff, like Lazuli, Demians or Nemo.

Love them all but I'll bet Condor isn't ready for any of them just yet.
I agree with that PFM/Premiata suggestion. Might as well go with their debut though (Storia Di Un Minuto)
and perhaps Dungen. My Favorite is 4

Definitely that, and/or Maxophone's self-titled album if you want something more accessible and familiar to English prog that's a little heavier.
The album that helped me combat language bias best was Harmonium's "Si On Avait...", still a huge favourite of mine today. Gong's "Flying Teapot" was another great one, as is Bubu's "Anabelas" (not that good start out with though). If you want something modern, there are so many avenues to go down but "Hybris" is one to check out early on, as is "Agaetis Byrjun" by Sigur Ros if you're into that ambient/post-rock stuff. Looking through the top 100 albums, there's a ton of Italian bands with great back catalogues too that's seriously worth looking into (PFM, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme).

If instrumental is OK, I recommend Schicke Führs Fröhling (Symphonic Pictures, Sunburst).

I'd pick any of the first three Banco del Mutuo Soccorso albums - the self-titled, Darwin!, or Io Sono Nato Libero. Or perhaps Locanda delle Fate's debut (Forse le Lucciole...). The vocals are so beautiful it honestly doesn't matter if you understand Italian or not.

That was the other one I was going to recommend.
I'm not sure I get all these reco's for albums for instrumental albums or Non-English bands singing in English. Didn't the OP request Non-English language albums? Maybe I just misunderstood the post & he's looking for bands from countries that aren't the UK or USA.

On the Italian scene the three bands that really stand out to me are Area (I don't think you can go wrong with the debut), Osanna (Palepoli) and Il Baletto Di Bronzo (basically only did Ys). With the Opeth/Crimson stuff I can see you getting along with the latter two, probably. Of the German stuff, Amon Duul 2's Yeti and Wolf City seem like obvious starting points. Ange's Au Dela Du Delire comes recommended if you like the idea of more concept album stuff with really daring vocals.
One album I can't recommend enough is the Quebecois 'Les Porches' by Maneige. Mostly instrumental but with some gorgeous resonant vocals from trumpeter/chansonnier Raoul Duguay.

To all the italian recomendations, I might add Metamorphosis "Inferno", perhaps my very favourite album from RPI, with wonderful keyboards all around and very strong vocals. Another few bands that haven't been recomended yet are Bacamarte with "Depois do Fim" (Ultimo Entardecer is a gorgeous song), and a few bands in spanish. I particularly like Triana's first two albums, with "Abre la Puerta" being particularly good. There's also Cast, with the album "Originalis" being really wonderful too (Frente al Umbral is a great song). And you might check out Los Jaivas song "La Poderosa Muerte"... the album where it comes from (Alturas de Matcu Pitcu) is usually highly regarded, though I didn't really enjoy it so much... but that song is a killer.

If you love Zeca Afonso I think you should give Banda do Casaco a listen, they have a more progressive approach to "our" Folk music. By the way, the albums you recommended from Zeca Afonso were better than I expected

I'll make such a list for the brazilian artists, but I'll wait for Secos & Molhados to get here, no list without them is a true list of brazilian music.

Really love the first 3, though I would add El Patio from Triana too. For me that pair of albums is wondeful. As for RPI, I usually prefer other bands over PFM. And the last 2 sound like albums I should check out. I have looked for albums in german and there really weren't many, and I wouldn't have known which should be good to check out. Il Tempio della Clessidre with Stefano "Lupo" Califi is the very finest in Italian Symphonic Prog today. Buy the "Live in Seoul" DVD from 2011 I you will see what it´s all about in Italian Prog today.
Alphataurus Live in Bloom 2011 DVD confirms the boldest comeback in classic RPI. The Dove is back !
Then you can starting digging the vast RPI archives. Start with Banco´s first 3 albums + the Live DVD from 1992 , Apoteosi, De De Lind, Osanna´s 3 first, Metamorfosi´s "Inferno", Maxophone, Museo Rosenbach´s "Zarathustra", Area with Demetrio Stratos , Le Orme´s 4 first, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Alphataurus first + Live in Bloom 2011 DVD, PFM ´s 1972 albums... there´s so much new worlds that it takes a novel to tell the great story of RPI. Nearly all classic Italian bands are just superb (in their own special way).
Italians are Masters of Melody .
And as it is said hear already, if you can´t understand Italian it really doesn´t matter at all.
Have a great Journey thru space & time

"Harakka Bialoipokku" from the great Finnish legend, Pekka Pohjola from 1974. A tale from the Finnish woods.
His finest but I also recommend "Pihkasilmä Kaarnakorva" from 1972.
Piirpauke´s 2 first albums from 1975-76 also defines the very best from Finnish forests.
Maarit´s first album from 1973, superb female vocals in Finnish. Not really Prog but superb musical contemporary pop music, superlative versions from "A Salty Dog" as "Merimies" and "Delta Dawn" as "Laakson lilja". Quite incredible sound quality, well all HiFi just disappears and the music remains.
Progression in sound quality really. I have found Finnish is a very beautiful language, hope you too
"Depois Do Fim" by Bacamarte feat. beautiful vocals from Jane Dupoc, 1983.
"666" by Aphrodite´s Child from Greece, 1972 is really something else. Extraordinary vocals (in English) by Demis Roussos and superb compositions & musicianship from Vangelis and Silver Kolouris. Also Irene Papas´ appearance is quite extraordinary, to say at least
And the classic Italian Prog genre from the 70´s, of course.
Enjoy

You're welcome , this is a very good album from France too:
Very unique style and one of the very masterpieces from France :), i recommend the others works of Ange too.
Andreol, I owned that Ange album about fifteen yeas ago, it´s excellent but I found it very difficult to accept French... I really tried but ... and at the very same time I got to known a couple of RPI classics and I get hooked and never looked back. Classic Italian masters... well, you know there´s no returning
I managed to sell the Montes album to fund the Crucis album...
and I´m waiting for the Crucis album from Japan !... fingers crossed

Yeah, it takes some albums and good listens to accept other languages and other rythms, for a good begin in French Prog(That is REALLY vast, with French Theatrical Symphonic, Zeuhl and unique R.I.O artists like Art Zoyd) i would recommend Ange first album, Caricatures, it's where i begun :).
If you want to adventure in more obscure styles of french prog, try Magma - M.D.K and Vortex - Les Cycles de Thanatos, it's REALLY other world.

Hey thank you!!, it's just fascinating how strange prog can go sometimes, and i still like it haha, until i listened to Demetrio Strato - Metrodora, this is a REALLY strange album.
Another masterpiece that i discovered recently is from Sweden, obscured by the shadows of the success of Anekdoten and Anglagard, this masterpiece of avant-prog:
