The bands included in this poll represent the loosest chronological definition of Neo-Prog, meaning any modern  prog band that emerged from the 1980's onwards, before anyone castigates me for my selection of Neo-Prog bands. Wink

Astra is psychedelic space rock......from the list of true neo...either Marillion or IQ.
You have been 'castigated'.

Wink

All of these I either haven't heard or am not a big fan of. I'll abstain.

The Tangent. Marillion very close.

I only included Astra's  album so I could vote it, because I haven't heard most of the other debut albums in the poll. Smile

I wonder if anyone's noticed my deliberate spelling mistake yet? Wink

Out of the Neo-prog bands on the list, Marillion's is the best.  Unfortunately, I can't vote because too many of these are great albums by non Neo-prog bands, so its not really an accurate poll.  But since you knew ahead of time that you would be "castigated", you must have already known that.

Yes, I knew from experience that not everyone would agree with my choice of Neo-Prog bands, but that's okay. It's all good fun. Smile

Paul, have you heard any of these albums on your list? No vote from me because Frost* Milliontown is missing.

I've heard of all of the artists in the poll, but the only album I've actually listened to and have in my prog collection is "The Weirding" by Astra, and that's the album I voted for. Smile

I don't generally listen to much prog from the modern era. All of the 88 albums I've reviewed so far are British classics from the late sixties and seventies era. Smile

I could include the  Frost* debut as a last-minute addition to the poll, but I'd have to remove an existing artist from the poll to create a space for it. Smile

Not a big fan of neo prog, and I must admit there are some albums here that I don't know, or not know them that well, so no vote from me.

Not to worry. I've only heard one of the albums on this poll - by Astra - even though I created the poll. Smile

I went for IQ, because it's a superb debut by a true neo-prog band. For All We Shared is wonderful (The Night Sky is one of my all time favourite tracks), but MA are not really neo-prog. I'm sorry that Out of Myself by Riverside isn't there. It's brilliant, but doesn't get the credit it deserves because the follow up (Second Life Syndrome) is even better.
SFAJT will win, but I've gone off it a bit and I prefer the 4 albums that came after.

I voted for IQ because they are a Neo Prog band and I don't like Script.

Well done! Thumbs Up I couldn't resist the name change after they were referred to as "Spock's Bread" in another recent poll. Smile

Tempted to go for Mars Volta but they're not neo-prog (they're in Heavy Prog on PA). Toss-up between Spock's Loaf and The Tengant.

Not sure why you felt the need to replace Jadis, who are much more "neo-prog" than Frost*!

And Marillion and IQ are romping away with it between them, with Marillion still catchable....Tongue

I did not say anything, I can't take this poll seriously, I will not vote.

Marillion  - don't seem to be allowed to vote maybe I'm too new

Rather partial to a bit of Aragon but they aren't an option  - thought they'd be neo prog

you should really not lump in all of these bands under neo prog

you could just as easily  call this   a  New Jazz list

it makes just as much sense

Spock's Loaf have just about earned their crust in this poll with one vote so far, although they're not on a roll like Marillion. Smile

I voted for Le Grand Sbam - Vaisseau Monde. You can't get anymore neo prog than that!

With Marillion romping away, I can safely give my vote to the wonderful Milliontown by Frost*

I replaced Jadis with Frost* after GrumpyProgFan suggested I add them so he could vote for their "Milliontown" debut. I didn't think anyone would miss Jadis because no one voted for them in my last Neo-Prog Poll. Smile

I'm not a Neo-Prog fan at all, so I was quite delighted to see bands that I've heard and like which aren't really Neo-Prog. So between them, I voted for Frost*

Of these, the best debut album is, without question, De-Loused in the Comatorium, but I NEVER would have considered The Mars Volta a "Neo-Prog" band nor this album a Neo Prog album!!! I am in shock!

Some of the Neo Prog debut albums that you've missed that, in my humble opinion, far exceed all the above poll-listed albums include:
ANYONE'S DAUGHTER's Adonis from 1979
BABYLON's self-titled debut from 1978
GALADRIEL's Muttered Promises from An Ageless Pond (1988)
PAZZO FANFANO DI MUSICA's self-titled debut from 1989
NEUSCHWANSTEIN's Battlement from 1978
IVORY's Sad Cypress from 1980
TRILOGY's Here it Is from 1979
COLLAGE's Baznie from 1990
SATELLITE's A Street Between Sunrise and Sunset from 2003
MOTH VELLUM's self-titled debut from 2007
I AND THOU's Speak from 2012
QUIDAM's self-titled debut from 1996
SANHEDRIN's Ever After from 2011
JOHN HOLDEN's Capture Light from 2018
LIFESIGN's self-titled debut from 2013

Thanks for the recommendations. Thumbs Up I've never heard of any of those bands before. You have enough bands there to run your own Neo-Prog poll. Smile

based on you def. of new as being after 1979 (quite absurd in 2020):

Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium

Why not:

Best Neo-Prog Debut Album after 79
