Just home-produced a mock radio program for Ballads (using the popular definition: slower, pop-oriented songs) made by Prog Rock Bands--this is the list of tracks. Curious which are the faves of PA members.

BTW, I have a lot of themed radio programs, some that aired live, and others home-made. I don't have a podcast or anything (yet) but have this and the others publicly available in my Onedrive folder.  This hyperlink should take you direct to the Mp3 file:

My own choice is Rush, followed closely by Opeth.

Hard for me to vote against Renaissance but "Spirit of the Water" by Camel is wonderful, showing how well they understood their strengths and played to them.

Spirit of The Water is probably the best song written by Peter Bardens, but I don't consider it a ballad. So my vote goes to Wonderous Story...not really a ballad, too. Well, what is a ballad?

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Quite beautiful melodies in this list. I’m voting for Look into the Sun.

Yes, I looked through some of the debate over the definition of "ballad" in other forums. So I'm aware that its not technically completely clear.  Just keeping it simple as I defined it above.

Ocean Gypsy, although I would've chosen Ripples if it was Annie Haslam's version. Smile

Silent Stories Ripple across the Ocean Water Into the Sun. In that order.

think Mad Man Moon is a better ballad but chose Ripples.

"Different Strings" and "C'est La Vie" are fantastic. If I could vote for both, I would...

I think I prefer C'Est La Vie of Emerson Lake & Palmer, as a true ballad.

Too cool!  I didn't know Annie did this cover, and its quite good, but I still think the original Genesis version is better.

Spirit of the Water is wonderful, but not a ballad.
Ocean Gypsy is wonderful and is one, so gets my vote.

Haven't heard the first and last choices yet, but great stuff. Hard to choose. I'll go with GG simply for relatable lyrics that really get me. It's not often that the lyrics will sway me in these polls as opposed to the composition, but when they're all that good...

I like MMM better too, though I think Ripples works better for this definition of "ballad" because its instrumental middle section doesn't get theatrical and slightly angsty like the former's does.

Ok, so where's the ballads? Tongue

I don't know all of them but I voted for silent lucidity anyway. Ripples would be a close second. Wonderous Stories is great but I don't really consider it a ballad.

Obvious one to vote for was Ripples but I like the good even spread of choices here (except for DT).

Ripples, magnificent and epic, one of the best of the band.

I would choose Silent lucidity, but Think of Me With Kindness - Gentle Giant is absolutely killer, it makes me cry really, fabulous

Think of me with Kindness is so good. It beats out Ripples, Tull and Renaissance.
