I'm leaning towards Magma here but man I like that Setna album.

None of these rank in my Top 30 but I know all but Rialzu. Voted Setna: Love the infusion of some Canterbury sound in the keyboards and female vocals.
Weird that in a sub-genre whose sample size is fairly finite, of 12 albums of your choice (so far), none (0) are in my Top 30. I bet your next 18 are bound to be more to my liking!

I like the Setna, Zao & Eskaton but can't get past Magma in this list.

That Setna album is lovely, but Magma (obviously).

Not my favorite batch.
Magma

So surprised at the near-universal love Köhntarkösz gets! I love Magma, and I've tried and tried for 15 years to get to know and like it, but it just doesn't click with me. It's so slow and boring! a curiosity that somehow remains beyond my grasp …

Maybe you shouldn't listen to all music deeply consentrated in your Sony MDR-7506 headphones. Perhaps you get impatient while listening that way. I usually play Köhntarkösz loud in my studio - while working. Then its certainly not boring, but a doomladen trip that builds and builds in intensity.

I know and like all of these albums (I have been more of a completist when it came to Zeuhl than another category here, but that was moreso in my early years at this site). I did give this some thought and vote for ZAO's debut album, was tempted by Rialzu.. That said, when I saw the options the first music that popped into my head was Eskaton's "La Dance des feux". I love that track and like Fiction, but it is my least favourite Eskaton album overall -- the sound is thin and the electronics I feel could be better realised and utilised. And that Setna is beautiful. As for the Zwoyld, that is the one I've listened to the least, but then it came out after I was most into Zeuhl.
I really enjoy that Zao album with it's Canterburyesque jazzy sounds, and it is an album that I have considered to be underrated (yes, a commonly problematic term) at PA. Your five star review of it, John John obviously captures my feeling much more than, say Carl floyd fan's one star review of it: see reviews here http://www.progarchives.com/album-reviews.asp?id=5650" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/album-reviews.asp?id=5650 (but then he also gave Soft Machine's Second a one and called SM's debut five times better, so I'll just put it down to different tastes).
As for the mighty Magma with Kohntarkosz, that is one of those albums that I have to be in the right mood more, rather like Henry Cow's Western Culture in that respect. I know you haven't held it in such regard, John, but for me Magma never bettered the debut. Magma's first two, Attahk, and Retrospective 1-2 are the Magma albums that I have returned to the most.
------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

the same situation for me, 25 years listening Magma and Eskaton and dont click on me, love the instrumental parts and the flow of those songs, but those voices!

Karkönoszhswlpźååsükhryplawieprzplacek is a good name for a zeuhl band. As for my choice, I choose Setna.

We'll see, I still think I have odd tastes when it comes to music. Love Setna and ended up voting for them too. Big fan of Xing Sa as well. Both use atmosphere and space often.

Hopefully they get better, I like the last two polls I have lined up a lot but there's one before they arrive.

Awesome reply Greg and thanks for listing your top Magma albums. I knew the debut was there but was surprised at Attahk. And I could have easily included Retrospective I-2. I went with mostly live Magma albums, they just seem to click with me more. I actually re-listened to their first two last week again. So many second thoughts when making these lists.

Thanks John. I like every Magma album, including Merci (B side at least). Live Hhai is another I should have mentioned. When I was in Mexico some years ago, I decided to put on Attahk on my iPod while at the resort, and I just really fell for it at that time. It goes very well by the pool with a margarita, and now when I listen to it it takes me back there. To me it always sounds and feels light and fresh.
With Magma I like the variety. Some days Kohntarkosz really hits the spot (and there was a time when that was a particular favourite of mine). Recently I was in the mood for the funky Concert Bobino. Magma almost always has something to hit the spot depending on my mood and energy levels.

Excellent suggestion. I know I should give music more of a variety of listening modalities, but, seeing as all of my music collection is from music I've stored in my computer in MP3 format, I'm afraid listening on my Polk Audios will reveal a poor quality of sound! (Though, when I plug my iPod into my car's sound system, I'm usually pleased enough to be hearing whatever comes on.) Plus, I love the intimacy created by my headphones: it's as if it's just me and the artists--sometimes in the studio!)
P.S. I really don't get impatient or bored with music when I'm on my headphones. I'm more likely to get irritated with the external things that interrupt my music listening experience. No, usually, I love slow building, spacious music.
