1970's

One notable ommission from my list is Tubeway Army - Replicas. You have this as your number one album from 1979. I think this may have been added later after my initial list was drawn up. I have now included it as so will now share my 1979 list

I would have included some so called New Age albums in my eighties list although I have now included Stephen Caudel's Wine Dark Sea since it was added to AP. Also Mark Isham - Vapor Drawings and Claire Hammill - Voices rank quite high for me. I could add those myself but I seem to be very lazy these days!

I wonder how long it will take me to compile one...

I don't write or keep lists, so I struggle to remember half of what I've listened to. If I get asked to write a 'Top 20' for a particular year, assuming I've actually listened to 20 albums from that year, the list will mean very little as I'll have forgotten to include at least half of them!

Personally I have never been one for lists, so I struggle when people talk about their favourite albums from a specific year... I have to dig around on PA, constantly asking myself 'was that one from 1978 or 9?' Its much easier when members put a list up of albums from a year for me to vote on, because I can just accept they are right!

When it comes to ratings, I have frankly never given a rat's ass whether something should be a 4.2 or 4.3 out of 5; for those who like these kinds of things, fine... knock yourself out, but for me, I either like it or I don't... it either speaks to me more than their previous releases or less.. end of. Yes, I rate things on PA, which is pretty easy, because most things get a 3 or 4 star, but there have been literally hundreds of albums I've heard which are on PA, which I've never gotten around to give a rating to. As such, Mike's site, which I'm sure is very impressive, is the sort of thing that leaves me completely uninterested.

When a member says 'choose your fave from these 10', I'll make a choice, but ask me next month and it could be something different, purely because I feel in the mood for that one at the time!

I've never taken part in Album of the year, purely because there will only be a couple of albums that I will have heard... for instance in 2024, the only album I got around to hear was Focus 12. The rest of the time, I spend my time reacquainting myself with stuff I forgot to rate back in 2005 when I joined!!

Outstanding List. Adding a bit more, so we have a good idea what the old SPR shows were about, which included all these things listed and ,,, more!!!

One of the nicest things, is seeing these listed ... but even better, is, that I even have copies of shows by Guy Guden (Space Pirate Radio) where all of these were featured at various times, and in many cases, like TD and KS, things were played in their ENTIRETY! Guy has a copy of all these shows, and only he can distribute them, as desired, though he has not done so in the past.

I like these lists, however, the sad side of it, is that there really was not, in those days, a location where these were played almost exclusively, so seeing them "survive" and being remembered, is special, even in my heart, and I (generally) do not like lists. And the credit gors to Guy, for having put up with so much during that time, to fight for all this stuff to get an ear, or two!

NOTE: When you see the list for that many hours, you can get the feeling for the hardcore dedication to (not only) the new music, but also, what was (at the time) imports! Thus the timing of their release would not exactly be correct!

IF anything, you can see how a show put on so much, to the point that a listing makes me drool ... and so many of the shows on the Internet, are not as open minded and experimental as this show was, and still is, though I think Guy is (likely) not well, these days. His spirit, if the show is over, is ridiculously insane, and I apologize for mentioning it so many times, but greatness needs to be appreciated, specially in a place like PA.

I would be interested in what it is that puts you off. When it comes to rating precision, I have been thinking about offering reduced UIs, so for example instead of using the 1-100 scale (which I already segmented into tiers) I could offer only tiers (F, E, D, C, B, A, S) for those who are turned of by the numbers. 

Regarding these poll lists specifically, I have made it a point to implement them without the need to rate anything. You merely select a list of releases - done! Registered users can optionally rate them, and I'm glad that people do it, but I'm equally happy if people just posts unrated lists.

Please let me know, either here or as a PM, if there is something I could do at AP that would make you want to try to use it! 

I agree! Throughout 2024 I have been moving towards a simpler system. Even though the underlying system is complex, when I nowadays rate a release, I only think in terms of tiers (S - Stellar, A - Awesome, B - Great etc.) and then the "fractions" are merely slider-like gradations. I'll definitely introduce a simplified version that does away with the fractions and gives you a simple dropdown with the seven tiers. I could even add a more simplified mode that emulates the PA stars, mapping S to 5 stars, A to 4 stars, B and C to three stars and D, E to two stars and F to 1 star. Users will be able to switch back and forth between these modes to find what suits them best.

and anything else that was on the Hipgnosis label at that time, specially that Breakfast Inner sleeve listing ingredients as bands (posted elsewhere a while back here on PA) (The secretary at Po's office was not aware of it, and never replied to me if Po even remembered it). Very sad to see him crying in the end of that special ... he deserves/deserved way better for his artistry. Also, by the end of 1974, all of the releases by HARVEST that had all kinds of European stuff showing, and they all, just about, got played. I think that the only one not played, was Lol Coxhill, but it might be there somewhere and I did not catch it.

About Midnight Mushrumps ... I always wanted to see the plays and how the music was used, if anything else besides the opening, closing and intermission music. I have never found any performances with it at all, and not much is said about it, which is tough ... at least in Germany with krautrock) we know who used who and what the connection was, but in England, it was kinda ... not shown. The same for several things, like Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells with various celebrities doing the voices introducing the instruments, and several other things, and I believe that The Snow Goose was also narrated more than once, but I can not find anything about it.

The bizarre, or funny if you will, is how experimental the RSC and NT were in London and so many of those actors and actresses ended up in movies, but even in the movies the rock folks we know (for example) are not represented very well at all ... which is weird, in my book. And strangest of all, is the "Tonight We All Love In London" which has a lot of interesting names in the film, and many of those folks were all around Kevin's place, where so many congregated for whatever reason, and you  know the scene in Canterbury, was basically started, or given a name via an art show ... where John met Yoko, for that matter, as it was there that the white wall with one black dot was ... and Soft Machine in the background playing ... and my bet still is that Robert Wyatt started the 1,2,3 and 4 thing (on the 3rd album!) to try and get some attention. RW has not said much about it, and it might be that at the time, he was, along with many others, so stoned out of their minds that they would not remember much ... but Daevid Allen had a lot to say about it in his taped stories that became a book, or 2, although his main fun thing to say was that Burroughs was gay and and ... tatata ... but he's not the only one. Ginsburg is also there, so the scene was much more open minded than we think. AND, with a literary touch and various actors and actresses all around ... which makes sense, since they were all just about the same age having fun! 

One film maker was great with the music ... Nicolas Roeg used a lot of it since his earlier days with the film PERFORMANCE, which is a serious treat as a film, but way too far out and out there for many folks to handle. Visually stunning, and some music moments that are way beyond what we expected at the time. Kudos to Mick Jagger and The Last Poets, the part in Black music that has been lost for a long time! The last thing he used was in "Bad Timing, A Sensual Obsession" when he had stuff from "Who Are You".
