In my opinion, in every era that King Crimson has done work, their first
album of that era is a revolutionary or groundbreaking work for that era.
In The Court Era(1969-1971)-In The Court Of The Crimson King(1969)
LTiA/SaBB Era(1973-1974)-LTiA(1973)
Discipline Era(1981-1984)-Discipline(1981)
Thrak/CoL Era(1995-2003)-Thrak(1995)
TPtB Era(2003-present)-The Power To Believe(2003)-this album is the least
groundbreaking in my opinion. Still, new sound for Crimson.

In terms of instrumentals, these three albums-LTiA, SaBB, and Red stomp
every King Crimson album ever created. Don't believe me? Listen to LTiA
Parts I and II, Fracture, and Starless. Red, too, just for good measure.
And then look at the other instrumentals:
just some examples:
The Devil's Triangle
Lizard
Sailor's Tale
The Sheltering Sky
Indiscipline
Industrial Zones A&B
Most of these are really good, but they just can't keep up with the
intensity that LTiA, SaBB, and Red deliver. But, again, they are excellent in
a different way.

I think that Islands is being placed too low. I mean, I think Beat is worse
than Islands, and it's my least favorite album of that era. Islands has good
stuff on it, such as Sailor's Tale, Ladies of the Road, The Letter reminds
me of a song off of Lizard for some reason, and Formentera Lady is a
great prelude to Sailor's Tale. This is my top 10:
1. In The Court Of The Crimson King
2. Larks' Tongues In Aspic
3. Starless And Bible Black
4. Lizard
5. Islands
6. In The Wake Of Poseidon
7. Red
8. Discipline
9. Three of a Perfect Pair
10. Thrak
Most of the selections are right on the tick, I just think Islands is a well-
crafted, well-sculpted album. I dunno, I feel like a prat for posting this. I
just like Islands a lot.

hahahha don't feel like a prat.. heck you've already had one thread closed, I'm jeolous I haven't had one closed yet.
Anyway I know I had Islands low on my list, but that's a long way from
saying I don't enjoy it or think it's crap. I'm just not a Boz
Burrell fan, and a big Greg Lake and John Wetton fan so I enjoy those
incarnations more. It's all relative I guess especially with a
group like King Crimson....if you don't like an album... just wait for
the next one when Fripp runs off the group members and has a new group
and direction for the group. King Crimson... the definative prog rock group IMO.

Yeah, I know, actually, I'm not a Burrell fan either, mainly because he was
only around for one album. I like Wetton and Lake a lot more, because they
have been around longer, and because I'm an ELP fan as well. I mainly like
Islands for Sailor's Tale and Ladies of the Road. But, I dunno, I guess I'm just
a King Crimson freak, and I get slightly defensive when I think someone's
cursing down one of their albums....but thanks for clearing that up for me.
What you said is utterly true.

my own prejudices toward 'classic' prog)... but have had the chance to
hear some of their latter stuff and ... popular music may have passed

no, they haven't. King Crimson always stays with prog and will forever. They
have refused to fall into the vat of commercial pop success and that makes
them one of the most legendary prog bands of all time.

Exactly! That is what is great about King Crimson. They never stop to progress. Their last album is really interesting and still full of innovation and it came out about 35 years after their debut album. I can't wait for their next album. Especially since I found out Tony Levin was back with the band. Unfortunately, it won't come out before another year or two

And they are always a head of their times. I listened to The Power To

today. Albeit this was the case with ITCOTKC back in '69

Their sound was always brilliant and unique, and yes, it's true, they were
always ahead of their times. I mean, King Crimson helped spawn Emerson,
Lake, and Palmer, who are a legendary band in their own right! They are
capable of so much, and have shown on every occasion, to be up to the
challenge.

In the Court of the Crimson King is their best. Nothing else touched it.
But their other albums are beyond magnificent, too. Lark's Tongues especially. That, I think, is their second best, followed by (in order):
Lizard Red In The Wake Of Poseidon Islands Starless and Bible Black
EDIT: I don't bother mentioning Discipline. I've reviewed that album if you want to see what I think of it.

Try their last one The Power to Believe. It is a pretty strong album in my opinion. Maybe I'm a KC fanboy but I would also recommend Thrak, Three of a perfect pair and The Construcktion of Light. So many of their records have so much to recommend them... each has moments that people will be listening to and analyzing 1000 years from now. I haven't heard much of KC, and definatly plan to change that. Red is encredible. To listen and think it was done in 74 is just so cool.
I am also glad to see some people got The Power To Believe in thier list, cause I think it is really, really good. It has a classic Crimson sound. Sometimes I think people automatically dismiss great bands of th 70s new stuff because they don't think it will compare, and to me this is a great folly. Power to Believe is a great example of why this band was amazing, and still is.

Red, Larks Tongues, Absent Lovers Live In Montreal, USA
The 70's Bruford-Wetton-Cross-Fripp era is fantastic.
The Belew-Levin-Bruford-Fripp era is IMO equally superb. While the band sounds mechanical and uninspired on the studio albums, the live album Absent Lovers, and the DVD of that era make this lineup just as enjoyable as any of the 70's lineup's. Adrian Belew is my favorite Crimson vocalist, and his wacky songwriting and guitar sounds rose Crimson to new heights. Fripp + Belew = Awesome.

I would like to quote a frase by a review of starless and bible black that expresses my sentiments to this band:
"It is useless, I give up. Every sigle record I hear by KC it is the best"

god i love king crimson so much they are one of my favorite bands of their albums that ive heard this is how i would rank them
1. In The Court Of The Crimson King(the one that got me into them)
2.Larks Tongues In Aspic(ltia 1 and 2 are both amazing songs)
3.In The Wake Of Poseidon(cadence and cascade is prolly one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard)
4.Starless And Bible Black(i agree the title track is amazing)
5.Red(one reason i love crimson so much is the change in sound during each decade, they evolved with the times better than any band ive ever heard)
6.Thrak(see above comment)
7.Lizard( didnt care for this one as much never really grabbed but its still really good to zone out to)
8.Discipline(a little wierd for my tastes but still cool as hell)
9.Islands(a few good songs but on the whole not as strong as others)
10.Power To Believe(i think the sound is cool and they have definatley upped their sound to keep up with today's progressive music)
