You can treat this as a variation on the Desert Island theme if you wish.
You can choose any five cds you want to have with you. But they must be double cds, as released originally by the artist/band. Not live albums, only studio ones. You can choose concept albums, or the two discs may be unconnected, the choice is yours.
Don't include albums that have been reissued as a double package, such as the Snapper reissues of the Ozric Tentacles, which has brought together albums that were originally released separately.
I am just curious which five you rate most highly.
You don't have to put them in any particular order, but you can if you wish.
To start the ball rolling, here are mine:
2. Flower Kings - Flower Power. (I love both discs and every track on them. Tremendous!)
3. Yes - Topographic Oceans. (Superb to listen to, from start to finish. Yes at their best.)
4. Flower Kings - Unfold The Future. (Another one from these boys, again, two brilliant discs.)
5. Marillion - Marbles. (Up until recently, Pink Floyd's The Wall would have been here. But I have taken to Marbles more and more. Wonderful stuff.)
Now choose yours.

Hmm... Tough, since many of my favorite bands did not release studio double albums. Let's see.
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Pink Floyd - The Wall (though not a good choice on a desert island, I'd probably end up commiting suicide!)
Harmonium - L'Heptade
Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (probably my favorite DT album)
Oh, and if those two albums had been released as double, like they were meant to be released, 'Deliverance' and 'Damnation' by Opeth would have been my first choice.

Rush - Different Stages (I know, it has three discs, but hey, it's their greatest compilation)
Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool (double live compilation!)
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Saga - either Detours or The Chapters Live (Detours has many of their best songs)
Camel - A Live Record (double cd re-edition)
|
Nice selection, but unfortunately you chose some live ones there, and I did ask only for studio albums.
If the list was for live albums, I must admit I would choose Rush. But, although Different Stages is tremendous, it is three discs, so I would go with All The World's A Stage.

Ayreon: The Human Equation- the only double album that I can think of that doesn't get too tedious (that I have at least)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenneas to Heaven- seems like forever whence listening to it all the way through, but who cares, its great!
Dream Theater: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence- A few hit or miss songs (depending on who you're asking), but its totally made up for by the superb title track (aka disc 2)
Yes: Tales from Topographic Oceans: pretentious as hell, but it has some great parts
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Stadium ArcadiuHAHAHAHAHA sorry I can't say that with a straight face
The Beatles: The White Album- it's the Beatles. 'nuff said.

I forgot that Electric Ladyland is one cd, but it was originally a double album, and IMHO, one of rock's masterpices.
Anyway, I'll also include Miles Davis' Bitches Brew

I must admit I forgot about PT's The Sky Moves Sideways. Originally it was one disc, but I have the re-release with the bonus disc. Whether that counts I don't know!
But I think we can allow it. Not sure now if I would replace one of my five choices with it. It is one of my favourite PT releases. (Possibly I would replace Marbles with it.)
Too hard to say!!! (I hate Steven Wilson! Far too talented!)

I don't want to include albums I don't enjoy too much, therefore there are no The Lamb.. by Genesis, no Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes, no The White Album by The Beatles, no Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin there.
Actually, I can name only two double studio albums, namely: Present by Van der Graaf Generator and The Wall by Pink Floyd.
Also, if you want to count Third by Soft Machine as a double album (I have it at one single disc), then it can be included as well as The Fall of the House of Usher by Peter Hammill (once again, I have it at one disc, but it can be divided into two vinyls (I think)).
And, maybe, The Nightcap by Jethro Tull...

Chicago Transit Authority
Soft Machine's Third
Who's Quadraphenia
Cream's Wheels On Fire
Zappa's Shiek Yabouti
although it should be noted, two of these while released as double LP
sets. now each fit onto a single sub-80 minute CD (BTW Zappa's Joes

a double LP set - so really formatted as a treble).

You've stumped me a bit by not allowing live albums. Otherwise Seconds Out and Paris would be in there.
The Lamb is a possibility, as is Quadraphenia and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The Wall is a must. I suppose the White Album would be in there as well.

No live or compilations albums? That knocks out a pile of classic releases. In fact, Zappa, Magma and King Crimson put out most of their best work on live albums. Oh well ...
Prog:
- Soft Machine - Third (portions recorded live - is that allowed?)
- Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (live in the studio. Hmmmm)
- Can - Tago Mago
- Magma - Magma (aka Kobaia)
- Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Non-prog:
- The Beatles - White Album
- Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti
- The Who - Tommy
- Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
- Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
Essential live doubles:
- Magma - Live/Hhai
- King Crimson - The Night Watch
- Henry Cow - Concerts
- Zappa - Roxy & Elsewhere
- Fred Frith - Keep the Dog
- Space Ritual - Hawkwind
- Playing The Fool - Gentle Giant
- Bursting Out - Jethro Tull (or A Little Light Music)

I found it surprisingly tough to come up with five great double albums, but these would certainly merit inclusion on my desert island list:
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti: Not just a double, but also my fave Zep album overall. So much BANG for your buck on there! First one I thought of.
Who - Quadrophenia: This last truly great album from my fave R&R outfit saw me into my teenage years. A must on my list.
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway: Of course! Though perhaps not my favourite, it's great, and I'll need some of my top prog band for my exile.
Wilco - Being There: These guys are perhaps my favourite American group today, in any category, and this one is very solid and varied, even if not my overall fave. More people should check them out -- try "A Ghost is Born" and "Summer Teeth," please!
Beatles - White Album: May as well bring some of the most important band ever, and there's lots of essential stuff on here!
Other than live albums & compilations, I can't think of a sixth "must have" double.
Nice variation on the old concept, BTW chessman!

666- Aphrodite's Child (fantastic- truly superb album which deserves much more attention than it gets- nothing else sounds quite like it)
Third- Soft Machine (another unique album that I love)
Yeti- Amon Duul II (love the long warped guitar workouts on this album)
The Lamb Lies Down...-Genesis (well actually I must be in a minority in slightly prefering the second half of this- some of Genesis' very best work)
TFTO- Yes (a classic imo- not the folly its reputation suggests and I love it)

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Ayreon - Into The Electric Castle, Dream Sequencer, Human Equation
Spock's Beard - Snow

OOOH ! In my list there's another "Live" one, Deep Purple's "Made in Japan". You can drop it out and put it "Hymns to the Silence" by Van Morrison.
It's hard to find original double-albums I'm really happy with from start to finish, truly. The Beautiful South originally had "Painting it red" conceived as a double album, and, for a LIMITED EDITION only, it WAS ( I'm a lucky owner of this ). If it were a regular double-album I'd even put it onto top, though I'm not a Beautiful South-Fan at all...
------------- ...I'm a musician/singer/songwriter, visit me on www.reverbnation.com/rupertlenz and there you can choose from 125 recordings you can listen to ( for free ) if you're not limited to prog-rock !

The Lamb
The Wall
Tommy
Ummagumma
No others for now.
EDIT: I guess Godbluff/Still Life, but that's stretching the rules a bit, it seems.
