Just saw the new Mel Gibson film "Apocolypto". Curious if anyone else has seen it? Got fantastic reviews, and I found it to be quite dissapointing; a real shock for me!
The movie i felt was just poorly put together, and was really just eye candy in the end. Beautiful costumes and environments, and filmed well...but man, this was NO Braveheart or Passion! My bro said it was so unrealistic because it was based on a myth? Never heard that, I thought it was going to be historicaly correct and crap but damnwas it WAY off. It was "meh" -------------  "Only the sun knew why"

Ya, I was underwhelmed too. It was a really unique film, and I assume a good aspect of Myan civilization, something neglected in major films, but it was just a little too weird for its own good. I though it was a brilliantly paced action film. The visuals were gorgeous. the music added to it I don't think it was unrealistic, except for the running part. the Mayans were not exactly a peaceful civilization. |

Yeah, but only really bad during a ritual scrifice part, which leaves about no aspect of ritual sacrifice to be imagined. ^^ ok cool- I just saw Blood Diamond- and I am kinda done with violent movies for a while- WAY too intense for me to see another like it for a while.

I also didnt find the movie "gory" at all really. Come on, this movie compared to what we have seen was childs play! So, what, a few guys get hit with spears and bows, and they are bludgened instead of having their heads cut off. At times it had disturbing themes, but it wasnt like braveheart where blood was splattered on the screen after a guys leg was sliced off.
Also, this movie if taken seriously was INCREDIBLY unrealistic! Spoilers: How did he get his wife and child out of that impossible dilemma of being in a rain filled hole? How did they even SURVIVE beyond a DAY in there!??!?! and PREGNANT!?? The main character was shot through the side with an arrow, and runs for about 2 days from his enemies...who SOMEHOW follow him like a STRAIGHT line through a JUNGLE. Impossible. He RUNS from a jaguar...Impossible. He is then shot AGAIN in the sholder, and LIVES, and SAVES HIS WIFE AND CHILD AND BABY!!! omfg. i remember coutning them as the movie went along...and why does this little girl have the voice of a woman when shes telling the omen??? The movie just BAGH dissapointed me on so many levels. "meh" P.S., I found the main characters acting to be horrible, with his "I am in front of a camera right now" looks every other cene. All of Mel Gibson's movies are wildly historically inaccurate, so I usually don't watch them. If you are looking for historical accuracy don't go looking for it in Gibson's films.Braveheart is filled with so many historical innaccuracies it is laughable. The pinnacle battle in the film?That battle is called the Battle of Stirling Bridge.Did you see a bridge in the battle?The bridge played an extremely pivotal role in the battle,because the British had to cross it to get to Wallace's forces and could only send a certain number of men across at a time,two abreast. So I don't ever go into a Gibson movie looking for historical accuracy anymore. -------------  |

Well, it was more so the feel or realism that I was looking for...not so much accuracy. I could care less if there are a few things scewed by the movie, but Apocolypto was just taking away the entire FEEL of a civilization like that...I just didnt even believe it. ------------- "Only the sun knew why"

Mel Gibson's """"" 'movies' """"" (notice the extra "'s) should be commented in the "Just for fun" section. Once, on a very long highway travel (6 hours), I saw myself out of bateries, meaning without music, and not having a book at hand (at least an unread one). So, in order to take my mind out of the sad reality of a long trip, I decided to follow the movies they had. A DVD containing "The patriot" and "Braveheart". Too figurative for me, I'm affraid. Some sort of neoclassic attitude in the overall plot, and too guided, lineal stories, representing values that I'm not certain about how much of values they really are. As for artistry, even those anonimous Star Trek movies directors can do that. Not challenge at all. As for beauty, Wes Anderson goes far beyond if compared. Off course, eyes must be prepared to see beyond shape. If not, this are movies anyway. ------------- ¡Beware of the Bee! |

I just want to laugh at Mel Gibson because I think he got the Mayans and the Aztecs confused: the Mayans were dead LONG before Cortez came. Their civilization essentially vanished, and it is speculated that they had deforested the surrounding area so much that they were destroyed by floods or something because of erosion or changes in the weather. I saw something on PBS about it a while ago.
Some people I knew saw it and said it was pretty good. I wasn't going to see it anyway so I don't really care. |

Mel Gibson is quite vague artistically speaking. I have to give him some credit, not every actor can make it as a film director. But his work as such is just average and commited to efectism and money. I'll stick to Fellini. ------------- ¡Beware of the Bee! |
